after - po, np. What did you do after you had seen the
accident?
by - I had replied to all the emails by noon.
by the end - przed końcem, np. They hadn’t finished the
project by the end of the set time.
by the time - zanim, przed, np. We had eaten all the cake
by the time Jeremy arrived.
by that time - do tego czasu, np. By that time she had
saved enough money to buy a car.
when - kiedy, np. Jim had known Susan for only a year
when he proposed to her.

When the subject of the sentence is singular, use was
not or wasn’t. When the subject is plural, use were
not or weren’t.
