Float-over hardware
Float-over Hardware
The topside structure is transported by heavy barge to the installation site, when the mating process
commences, as part of the float-over procedure; To successfully install the float-over, a variety of hardware
is needed, as seen in the figure below.

Float-over Hardware
A number of components are needed for successful mating of the topsides with the substructure.

Leg Mating Unit (LMU)
LMUs can be put in the foundation or on the
topside. They are made of a steel structure
with designed elastomeric pads. They have
the capacity to withstand enormous weights
and reduce the chance of damage occurring
when the load from the topside is transferred
to the jacket. The purpose of the elastomeric
pads in LMUs is to relieve the horizontal
forces caused by the movements of the sea
surface during the float-over mating
operation and to absorb the static and
dynamic forces of the topside structure. The
topside leg cans are welded to the Figure: Illustration of the LMU connection
substructure following installation.
Deck Support Unit (DSU)
Sliding supports called deck support units are
frequently used on the topside and legs of barges.
DSU is made up of a sliding substance with a low
coefficient of friction layered on top of a rubber
element. When the topside leg presses against the
DSU and compresses the rubber element to a
predetermined limit, a solid and stable connection
will be created. This link will keep the topside from
moving laterally while it is transiting. When the
topside transfers the loads to the LMU during the
float-over operation, the DSU will help with load
transfer in the topside leg. When the load transfer is
finished, the barge will slide more easily due to the Figure: Illustration of DSU
sliding surface on the top of the DSU.
