MWA #2

The short story that I have chosen to write this project on is “A Good Man is Hard to

Find”. I chose this story because it displays a small sense of good versus evil, this story also

shows death after it introduces family which is the main theme of this entire story. Family is

showcased in this story and is also a key takeaway throughout the story. For the most part the

story is good and then towards the middle and end evil gets introduced slowly. The evil is first

introduced as a saving grace, sort of like a backboard and then all of a sudden the grace turns

ungodly. I think overall in this story there are many different “I told you so moments”

throughout the reading, with obviously one large major “I told you so” that starts off in the

beginning of the story. In this essay I will touch on many different points and I would like to get

my thoughts about the themes across by using recalling, and other writing tools and/or abilities

that I have at my disposal.

The story starts off as a somewhat typical family from Georgia in the 1950’s there’s still

plenty of prejudiceness and being in a southern state adds a bit more racism into the mix. This

caucasian family is getting ready to go on their summer vacation to Florida, however the

grandmother is not completely on board. She lives with her son and his family and she is kind of

upset about going to Florida because she wants to go visit her friends that are in Tennessee. The

grandma begins trying to persuade her son to not go to Florida and she shows him some kind of

newspaper article. The article touches on a man that has escaped from prison, and he refers to

himself as “The Misfit”, anyways the son brushes his mother off and didn’t care to look at the

article and at this point there is no changing his mind about going to Florida. The next day the

grandmother is the first one in the care ready to go, the family leaves Georgia and they make

their First stop in Timothy, Tennessee at a restaurant. The grandma begins talking about the

misfit and what would happen if him and his crew showed up at the restaurant and then the
workers immediately tell her to stop talking. The family finally gets back on their way when the

grandma starts telling a story about an old plantation she visited and she wanted to go back but

the dad wouldn’t have it, but the more she told the story she got the kids on board with it and

they bugged the father until he decided to turn around and head towards the plantation. On the

dirt road the grandmother realizes that the plantation was in Georgia and not in Tennessee and as

she has that realization BOOM, the car hit a ditch and rolled over once but landed upright.

Everyone in the car was very hurt and the car was broken. All the family could do was sit and

hope that someone decided to drive down that dirt road and help them. Sure enough a car slowly

approaches and 3 men get out. These men seemed to be nice, however they all had guns on them.

They were helping the family until the grandmother realizes that one of them look familiar, and

she finally builds up the courage and asks him if he was the “Misfit” in which he replies “It

would have been better for all of you, had you not recognized me”. The men begin taking each

family member one by one into the woods essentially and shooting leaving the grandma for last.

The major character I will be analyzing is the grandmother. I’m doing the grandmother

because she is to me the main character and she kind of sets up the scene and is a big contributor

to the thematic aspects of the story.
