DESIGN SPECIFICATION

DESIGN REQUIREMENT

To ensure the design specification aligns with the objectives of the Tidal energy harvesting
device. The requirement were outlined below.

This includes the following:

 The device should be able to harness energy from the rising and falling tides.
 The energy storage device should be in the form of a clock, which is wound up by the
movement of a platform.
 The clock should be able to store sufficient energy to power an electric generator.
 The device should be able to generate "off grid" power.
 The design should accommodate the input of energy to the clock when the tide is both
rising and falling.
 The design should consider the interface with the input shaft to the clock, which is 50mm
in diameter and requires a torque of 10KNm in the clockwise direction.
 The design should be scalable for potential commercial production of 50 units per annum.

DESIGN SPECIFICATION

1. OVERALL ASSEMBLY
 The overall assembly shall consist of the following main components:
i. Floating platform
ii. Rack and pinion Gear
iii. Crank Mechanism
iv. Clockwork energy storage mechanism.
v. Platform
 The assembly shall be designed for installation at remote coastal locations exposed to
harsh marine environments with high winds, waves, currents and corrosive conditions.
 All components shall be designed for a service life of about 20 years with adequate
consideration for corrosion protection and preventative maintenance provisions.
2. FLOATING PLATFORM
i. The Float platform shall have a dimension of 8m by 4m by 0.8m
ii. The floating platform shall have an area of at least 32m 2 to have large surface contact
with the water body
iii. The floating platform shall be constructed from marine-grade aluminum alloy 6061-
T6 for corrosion resistance and light weight.
3. RACK AND PINION MECHANISM
 A rack and pinion mechanism shall convert the 3m vertical motion into rotary motion to
wind the clockwork mechanism input shaft.
 The mechanism shall incorporate a freewheel or overrunning clutch to allow winding in
one direction only during rising and falling tides.
i. RACK
 The rack shall be made of Stainless steel 316
 The rack shall have 30mm face width and 16 DP
 The rack shall have an overall length of 3.5m
ii. PINION
 The pinion shall be made From Stainless Steel 316
 It shall be have and external gear of 47 teeth
 It shall have a face width of 30mm
 It must be able to withstand a minimum torque of 10KNm
4. SHAFT
i. The shaft shall be made From Stainless Steel 316
ii. The shaft shall a diameter of 50mm.
iii. The shall be 5m long
5. BEARING
i. Four bearing shall be used. (two to support the pinion shaft and the other two to support
the clock)
ii. The bearing shall have a bore of 50mm
iii. The bearing shall be a Sealed, marine-grade stainless steel ball/roller bearings
6. SUPPORT PLATFORM
 The support structure shall be fabricated from hollow structural steel sections protected
against corrosion.
 The platform shall be a rigid structure capable of resisting wave impacts and green water
loads on deck.
 The platform shall provide 3m of vertical travel between high and low tide levels.
 The platform shall incorporate stabilizing components to prevent excessive motions.
 Structure shall allow for jacking system to adjust platform elevation if required.
7. CRANK MECHANISM
 We shall use a crank arrangement to convert rotary motion from pinion to reciprocating
motion
 The crank radius shall be 0.5m
 The connecting rod length shall be 2m
 The cranks shall be made of marine grade stainless steel.

LIMITATIONS

i. The difference in height between high and low tide is 3 meters.

ii. The platform onto which the clock and generator will be mounted is 2.5 meters above
mean tide.

DESIGN CONSTRAINTS

 The device should be able to withstand harsh marine environments.

 The device should have a long lifespan with minimal maintenance requirements.
 To get a torque of 10KNm the float need to have contact with water surface over a large
area, this make the design size a big one.
