We’ve already discussed the pace of the M70
– it’s the whole point of the car – but even the
headline figures don’t really do it justice. When we
drive combustion-powered cars, particularly larger,
high-end models, we often talk about effortlessness
or the feeling that even when you’re going very
quickly indeed, the car isn’t really trying very hard.
It’s a crucial aspect of any luxury saloon, which has
to feel as though it has plenty of pace to spare, and
the M70 is a prime example of that.
Admittedly, its cause is somewhat bolstered by
the use of electric motors, which can waft even
something as bulky as the i7 to unfathomable
speeds without really making a noise. BMW likes
to give its cars a synthesised voice for reasons
that aren’t entirely clear, but you can always
turn that off, if you want. Either way, the beefy

Buying and tuning


You’ll discover lots of decent examples for sale
right now, with around 80% for sale at dealerships
rather than privately – and that’s the safest place
to buy one, with discounts readily available. Your
530e iPerformance Saloon should pack a full BMW
service history plus 12 months’ MOT and proof that
all recalls have been addressed.
So far, owners have reported relatively few
issues, but do check that the charging works
properly and test every electrical item – especially
the iDrive system, the headlights and the air-
conditioning, which have caused some owners
problems. Also, check for any signs of oil leaks,
and we’d stick to unmodified examples, as hybrid
tuning is still in its infancy. That said, there are a
few tweaks that can be made, even though most
owners have kept their 530e iPerformance Saloon
pretty standard.
Tuning-wise, the most obvious potential
modification is an ECU remap, with a few tuners
offering this on the 530e iPerformance Saloon. This
should release power earlier in the rev range with
additional low-down torque, plus improvements

F06 640d M Sport Gran


Coupé (2012-2018)
A saloon in all but name, the sleek 640d M
Sport Gran Coupé is fast, frugal, and classier
than a 3 or 5 Series Saloon.

BMW’s Gran Coupé models may not have


grabbed the public’s imagination in quite the same
way as more traditional saloons and two-door
coupés, but the F06 640d Gran Coupé makes an
excellent used choice for those who fancy a potent
four-door that’s a bit more exclusive than a 3 Series
or a 5 Series.
Sleek, fast, plush and frugal, this four-door
coupé is based on BMW’s F12 6 Series model
and was produced between 2012 and 2018.
Boasting the same 3.0-litre straight-six N57D30T1
powerplant as the F30 335d, the F06 640d Gran
Coupé is also readily tuneable to improve output
from the (already impressive) standard level of
313hp and 465lb ft.

a rarity among M’s greats.

M logo in its name, the 850CSi
was very much an M product.
It has an M engine, indicated
by the S in its S70 designation,
and the first three letters of each
CSi’s chassis number started
with WBS, as per all M cars.
While M had very much wanted
to produce a full-on M8, the
BMW board canned the model
due to it being too expensive to
produce, but lessons learned

were put to good use in the CSi.

In my never-ending quest to
restore my E38 to factory-fresh
condition, I tackle another big job
in this update with its face.
As we all know, the face of a car is
very important. For the BMW generation
like mine, that face comprises four
round headlights with two reasonable-
size kidney grilles. In a previous update,
I already replaced the kidney grilles with
a set of new genuine ones, which were
correct for its age (chrome surround
with black slats). On top of that,
both front indicators were replaced
with new OE Magneti Marelli ones.
And not to be outdone, the bonnet
badge was also replaced as well.
The next job was the headlights.
The lenses were really cloudy, and
while a machine polish may have
brightened them up (this worked well
on my previous E39), it’s not really
a permanent fix, as I found with the
E39. With no new headlights available
