In this piece of writing, I will be discussing the theme of why the coronavirus pandemic is
regarded as an international issue.
Firstly, one should look at what international relations are. International relations are political
matters that are not confined to one state or territory. It shows how different states or
organisations which are known as actors and systems interact with each other internationally.
These states or actors as referred to in political studies are to follow a certain set of rules and
norms which were built up over history when engaging with each other on this international
stage. The aim of these relations is to resolve matters between different states or help in
assisting states with issues.
Covid-19 which emerged in the city of Wuhan, China in 2019 is a disease that is spread
through human contact. At the time it was highly contagious and eventually as people
travelled within and across borders it spread, resulting in it being classified as a pandemic.
Another thing which contributed to the rapid spread of this virus was the fact in some cases
especially earlier on people appeared to show no symptoms even though they are carrying it,
or some would confuse it for a normal flu as they would show the same symptoms. These
symptoms include fever, cough, tiredness, and loss of taste.
It became an issue of international concern when there was an outbreak, it spread to a number
of countries and eventually a significant percentage of the global population became infected.
Travel bans were imposed internationally, and this contributed to tensions as well affected
trade affairs between certain countries. The organisation which pioneered the response on an
international level was the World Health Organisation. They were obligated to monitor the
pandemic along with teams of doctors and epidemiologists as well constantly appealing to
states to enforce their plan for combating the pandemic. This plan consisted of different
measures that will help slow down the spread of the virus. Vaccine research started quite
early, and one of the largest investors was well known philanthropist Bill Gates which in turn
also brought a lot of controversy around the vaccines as roll outs happened and people felt to
little research was done. Vaccines became monopolized in the sense that they were not
distributed equally, and low-income countries had access to less vaccines even though they
have greater populations in some cases. That in its own is an example of politics on the
international stage, once again emphasising the point of covid being an international issue.
So, in conclusion, from the above we can very much deduce that the covid-19 pandemic is
something of great concern on the international stage. It impacted a great deal of the world
and needed input from organisations that oversee affairs of this scale.
