The article introduces the concept of "digital business strategy" which refers to organizational strategy

formulated and executed by leveraging digital resources to create differential value. It argues that with
increased digitization, there is a need to rethink IT strategy as fused with business strategy rather than
just a support function.

Four key themes of digital business strategy are discussed:

Scope - Goes beyond traditional functional areas and silos to be trans-functional; includes digitization of
products, services and information around them; extends beyond firm boundaries to dynamic
ecosystems.

Scale - Enabled by cloud computing for rapid scale up/down; leverages network effects and multisided
platforms; taps into information abundance with big data; scales through alliances and partnerships.

Speed - Accelerates product launches; speeds up decision making; enables rapid supply chain
orchestration; allows faster formation of complementary business networks.

Value Creation - Leverages value from information; utilizes multisided business models; coordinates
models across business networks; controls industry architecture to appropriate value.

These four themes can guide future research on performance implications and success metrics for digital
business strategy.

The six research papers in the special issue shed light on formulating, executing and measuring
effectiveness of digital business strategies. The "Issues and Opinions" pieces offer thought leadership on
emerging challenges. Collectively, they underscore the convergence of IS and strategy domains under the
umbrella of digital business strategy.
