born in Wales of Norwegian immigrant parents.
THE He spent his childhood in England. After age of
eighteen, He went to work on a oil company
WRITER named Shell Oil Company. When world war 2
broke out he joined the Royal Air Force and
became a fighter pilot.
The wish

The story “The wish” is about a young boy’s


fantasy in which his carpet is alive with snakes
and fire. Dahl uses the character of a curiously
imaginative young boy to help us reflect on the
delicacy of our childhood innocence, This story
goes inside the mind of a young child to explore
his imagination. This is about a young boy who
had a frightening event in his childhood.
Summary
Like In the short story 'The Wish, a child becomes fascinated by a scab on his
knee and picks it off, revealing smooth red skin underneath. The scab lands on the
edge of a large, colourful carpet that stretches the length of a hall.
The child sees the red parts of the carpet as red-hot coals and the black parts as
poisonous snakes, and believes that if he can successfully navigate the carpet
without touching the coals or being bitten by the snakes, he will be given a puppy
for his birthday. Despite his fear, the child decides to undertake the journey across
the carpet, carefully placing his feet on the yellow parts as he makes his way to
the front door. As he progresses, the child's fear and determination are described
metaphorically, and he eventually reaches the other end of the carpet and is
rewarded with a puppy.
Throughout the story, the child's thoughts and actions are described from a third-
person perspective by the narrator, who provides insight into the child's
motivations and emotions. The story uses imagery and metaphor to convey the
child's experiences and observations, creating a vivid and engaging narrative.
Plot

In "The Wish" by Roald Dahl, the plot revolves


around Ralph Fischer, an ordinary school teacher
who discovers he can grant himself wishes through
meditation. Initially using this power for trivial gains,
Ralph's desires escalate until he seeks ultimate
power and immortality. However, each wish
fulfillment brings unintended consequences, leading
to his downfall. In the end, Ralph finds himself
trapped in a glass jar, illustrating the dangers of
unchecked ambition and the folly of greed.
