ABSTRACT

The world has been evolving for years, which means everyone can face different

situations, both good and bad. In this period, the world is facing the COVID-19

pandemic. This has become a global health issue and has had a major impact on

education. This research uncovers the struggles of students regarding the new

learning modality as the result of the pandemic COVID-19. It presents and discusses

findings and methods in which the researcher examined information acquired from

personal interviews and phenomenological study. There were thirty (30) respondents

in the study, the respondents were living in Sitio Kalubihon in different Purok. Results

show that there are eleven (11) respondents responded that academic performance

is not affected during the pandemic. There are nineteen (19) respondents who said

that academic performance was affected during the pandemic. This also shows that

the respondent's greatest challenge is having a lack of communication and

adjustment to the new set-up of studies. The researchers found that most of the

respondents' coping mechanism is to accept the new normal setup and learn to

apply it to survive during the pandemic times. Thus, the researcher recommends that

students should adopt a positive mental attitude to be able to think critically during a

difficult situation.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

The world has been evolving for years, which means everyone could face

different situations, both good and bad in this sense, new problems the world is

facing now the COVID-19 pandemic. Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an

infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The virus can spread from an

infected person’s mouth or nose in small liquid particles when they cough, sneeze,

speak, sing, or breathe. These particles range from larger respiratory droplets to

smaller aerosols. It is important to practice respiratory etiquette, for example by

coughing into a flexed elbow, and to stay home and self-isolate until you recover if

you feel unwell. (Reference)

According to Time Philippines (2021), some countries could cope and return

intently to their normal way of living, especially with education. The Philippines was

still facing the hardships of a pandemic where only 5,000 students in an estimated

100 schools were allowed to go to class but only for a limited number of days in this

case, not less than 99% of the students in the Philippines, out of 27 million students

from public schools enrolled this academic year.

This study aims to uncover the experiences and understand the struggles of

students in Sitio Kalubihon amidst the pandemic, to look for results that could help in

attaining resilience and a variety of coping mechanisms. This study intends to

answer the performance, and the coping strategies used to survive the challenges

experienced.

Statement of the Problem

Students have not only faced problems in education prior but also with their

way of living as well. This study aims to answer the following questions:

1. Are there any specific struggles that have faced academically ever since the

pandemic started?

2. How is academic performance affected by the pandemic?

3. What are the strategies or coping mechanisms to fight the struggles faced in the

time of the pandemic?

Significance of the Study

This research intends to answer the experiences of college students in Sitio

Kalubihon who faced pandemic experiences in online learning. This study was

conducted to benefit the following:

Students. This study may serve as a guide and reference for the students in giving

assistance to co-learners with difficult experiences in the studies as reflected in their

performance.

Parents. Parental involvement improves students’ achievement, self-esteem, and

behavior. It also helps to build strong relationships between parents and their

children at school.
Teachers. To understand the struggles of students during the time of the pandemic.

Teachers can also help students develop success to achieve academic success.

Future Researchers. This research will be a useful reference for researchers who

plan to make a study related to this research.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to know the academic experiences of the

college students in Sitio Kalubihon, Dalipuga, Iligan City during the pandemic. This

study considers every aspect of students with their personal information and

academic experiences.

The researchers encountered different challenging situations in gathering the

necessary data, and a limitation for a short period of time to communicate with the

college students, which may affect their interest to participate in this study.

Conceptual Framework of the Study

This study investigated the different academic experiences of college students

in Sitio Kalubihon. The independent variables include academic experiences. The

outcome of the study will be a recommendation with the aim of identifying the coping

mechanism of the college student based on the findings.

REVIEW OR RELATED LITERATURE

ARRANGE THE RRL

This chapter presents the different related literature and studies that would

be beneficial to the researchers.

According to Mary Gay L. Labrado (2020), the global educational system

has affected the largest population of learners in the history of the education

system due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The closure of schools happened in

some learning spaces countries.

Tria (2020) stated that most countries around the world have temporarily

closed educational institutions to contain the spread of the virus and reduce

infections.

According to N. Miller (2019), the fear of academic writing is compounded

by issues related to accessing courses online. …… add more info

Barham (2016) asserted that students contend with issues ranging from

challenges with the internet connectively to collaboration on assignments. ????

Marley (2007) examined studies that found that males and females have

varying experiences in online learning. Irrespective of the apparent differences

among learners, college students in 2020 to 2021 have the unique opportunity to

begin their college journeys by experiencing learning writing in a remote learning

environment utilizing the internet amidst its challenges and privileges.

According to UNESCO (2020), in 150 low and middle-income countries

studied, the learning loss amounted to 4 months for developing countries. The
countries studied offered remote teaching during the pandemic through online

learning.

According to Palvia et al. (2018), online education is on the path to

becoming widespread by 2025. This implies that at least some of the necessary

systems would have been in place in 2020. ADD MORE INFO

According to Jones-Mckenzie, (2018) in 2020, college students faced the

additional challenge of learning composition writing remotely as a result of a move

from face-to-face teaching to online and remote teaching.

According to Matanluk et al (2013), a well-designed learning module

effectively facilitates the teaching and learning process toward the achievement of

program outcomes.

According to Adnan & Anwar (2020) Baber (2020) Bahasoan et al (2020),

satisfaction with modular learning is also essential. The education sector has

been undergoing a profound transformation brought about by the pandemic, one

of which is the migration from face-to-face classes to online and/or remote

learning among schools.

According to Rowley (1998), students’ satisfaction levels clearly provide

learning opportunities and improvement and thus, affect students’ academic

achievement.
CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The researcher utilized the descriptive method using a qualitative approach to

gather information about college students' condition in times of pandemic. According

to Best (1993) descriptive types of research involve the collection of data to answer

the question in the study. To better understand how Covid-19 influences the student

academic, experiences and situations facing the pandemic. The researchers will

collect data on this characteristic throughout the study to focus the investigation on

the problem in depth. The student’s academic performance issues have been difficult

to adjust to the state of society at the time, the school was compelled to switch to

independent study.

Research Locale

This study was conducted in Sitio Kalubihon located in Barangay Dalipuga,

Iligan City. Kalubihon has a vast area of coconut trees and a mountainous place that

shares the same streamlines with Pampam and Dalipuga Falls. Also, this is one

popular place listed under Iligan City. Kalubihon High School is in this area that

consists of diverse students and passionate teachers.

Sample or the Respondent

This study uses the academic experiences of college students in Sitio

Kalubihon as respondent, thirty (30) of these respondents lives in Phase 1, Purok

4, and Purok 22 of Sitio Kalubihon, Dalipuga Iligan City. The respondent age

ranges from twenty (20) to twenty-five (25), fifteen (15) males and fifteen (15)

females.

Research Instrument

The research instrument used a revised questionnaire from Jayben P.

Locion et. al. from their study entitled “Academic Experiences of Senior High

School Students During the Pandemic”, wherein the researchers used in-depth

face-to-face interviews for the first-hand data.

The researchers will prepare an interview guide. The prepared questions will

be written in English with an enclosed vernacular dialect.

Data Collection Procedure

Before conducting the interview, the researchers will undergo a series of

steps. The researcher will prepare a letter to ask for the respondent’s consent

and permission to be one of the respondents of the study. During the interview, the

researchers will introduce themselves and discuss the purpose of the study. The

researchers will ensure that the respondent’s identity will be protected and

treated with confidentiality.

Note-taking and phone recording will be used to ensure that complete and

correct information will be documented from the responses of the respondents.

The researchers will close the interview and express gratitude for the information

gathered and for the respondent’s cooperation.

Data Analysis Procedure

Bogdan and Biklen (2003) define qualitative data analysis as “working with

data, organizing them, breaking them into manageable units, coding them,

synthesizing them, and searching for patterns”. The data will be analyzed using the

content analysis. The content analysis focused on interpreting and understanding

the challenges and perceptions encountered by the College Students of Sitio

Kalubihon towards Academic Experiences. The researchers chose content analysis

to give a clearer understanding of college students academic experiences.
