Foreword
Adorned in clay blocks, juxtaposed
with the grey tone, Hombale is an
experiential home made successful by
the harmonic collaboration between
the architect and the client, a civil
engineer. Setting a beautiful design
language for the barren vicinity of
crowded Bengaluru, this home is a
residence for the owner and others.
Emphasis on the rental and owner
spaces have been split equally.
The interiors are perfectly balanced

with traditional spaces like a Thotti
Mane designed for modern users.
Light engulfs the space through the
many skylights on the roof. Stained
glass windows placed adjacent to
each other add a romantic feel to the
whole space. Overall this compact,
smartly designed home takes into
consideration of the clients to create
an outcome that suits them best.

Project Context
The house is located in a residential neighborhood surrounded by many empty plots. Since it sits
on the edge of two roads, it has the freedom of looking out and having a panoramic view. Currently
being open on all sides, ample light and ventilation flows throughout the house. The architect
takes advantage of the site to create a highlighting residence with curved exteriors that make the
residence stand out.

Ground Floor
Central to the design philosophy is a central courtyard, reminiscent of traditional village homes,
where daily life revolves around communal interaction. By strategically situating rooms around
this central space, the design not only prioritizes privacy in urban environments but also cultivates
a sense of unity among family members, mirroring the tight-knit social dynamics found in rural
communities.

Living Area
The house is a multi-dwelling setting where every floor accommodates a private residence. The
ground floor has a residence with a single bedroom along with the other required spaces. The living
room on this floor is fairly simple. It is a double-height space surrounded by traditional wooden
columns all around. A terracotta wall with exposed stones provides a rugged feel to the space. The
kota flooring in multiple colors add whimsy to the space. The skylight on top brings in ample natural
light.

First Floor Plan

The first floor is again a separate residence with two bedrooms along with the required social spaces.
A separate staircase brings one to this floor where they enter into an open-plan abode. The living,
dining, kitchen and pooja space seamlessly flow to create the illusion of a large space. Curved walls
introduce themselves into the residence from this floor upwards.

Pooja Space
The pooja space on the 1st floor is a minimalist space. It is placed right next to the dining area. A
separate niche is provided for the pooja space where it can be seen from the surrounding spaces
and thus more people can be part of a larger event. Two traditional wooden columns are placed at
the entrance for a traditional touch. Transparent glass blocks form the backdrop, bringing in ample
natural light.

Second Floor Plan

The second and third floor comprise a duplex residence having 4 bedrooms along with the required
social spaces. The layout is similar to the second floor, however this floor has a central courtyard.
The courtyard is surrounded by an internal staircase that takes one to the upper floor. The living
room here is a double height space with a bridge above it that takes one to the terrace.

Living Space
The entire floor has an open plan layout where the living, dining, kitchen and the courtyard
seamlessly flow into each other. The living space is designed to be minimal with basic furniture
pieces. Exposed terracotta blocks and kota stone continue their exposed charm here as well. Antique
wooden furniture pieces adorn every corner of the space.

A central courtyard on this floor brings in ample light and ventilation the to the entire residence.
Wooden columns surround the courtyard to add a touch of traditional elements. The staircase is a
metal staircase with wooden planks as treads. This makes it lighter and transparent. The brick wall
behind the staircase is a patterned wall with inclined bricks. When light falls on this wall, multiple
patterns are created throughout the day.

Third Floor Plan

The third floor plan is a totally private space with just 2 bedrooms. One master bedroom has an
attached walk-in wardrobe making it a large space by adding leisure spaces to it. A bridge connects
one to the private terrace provided on this floor.

Master Bedroom
The master bedroom is simple and cosy. Curved walls all around the central bed make it a
comfortable space for one to relax in. Windows on two sides allow for active ventilation throughout
the day. Exposed terracotta blocks continue here as well for a rugged feeling. The furniture itself is
fairly simple and made in wood to go with the warm ambiance.

Master Bedroom
The master bedrooms on this floor have a dedicated study space where one can sit and relax after a
hectic day. A window looks out from the bedroom into the central staircase. Another window from
the bedroom across the staircase looks out into the courtyard thus creating a connection between
them. Blue stained glass panels in the windows add a pop of color into the otherwise warm hues of
the rooms. Pieces of artwork adorn the corners of the entire space.
