Image Catalog
This is the main dialog for the ERDAS IMAGINE Image Catalog. It appears when you click the
Image Catalog icon on the main ERDAS IMAGINE icon panel.

☞ The first time you use the Image Catalog, you must create a new catalog by selecting File |
New Catalog... from the Image Catalog menu (described below).

File Select this menu for options on opening catalogs, creating new catalogs, archiving
images, and restoring archived images to disk.

Open Catalog ... Select this option to open an existing catalog. The Open Catalog
dialog is opened.

New Catalog ... Select this option to create a new catalog. The New Catalog dialog is
opened. You must select this option the first time you use the Image Catalog.
Archive ... Select this option to archive the selected image. The Archive dialog is
opened. You must select an image before this is a valid option.

Restore ... Select this option to retrieve the selected image from the archive. The
Restore dialog is opened. You must select an image that has been archived (status =
ARCHIVED) before this is a valid option.

Close Select this option to close the Image Catalog.

Edit Select this menu for options to add images to and delete images from the catalog.
Catalog Layout ... Select this option to customize the layout of the columns in the Image
Catalog CellArray. The Catalog Layout dialog is opened.

Catalog Image ... Select this option to add an image to the catalog. The Catalog Image
dialog is opened.

Manual Entry ... Select this option to manually add an image to the current catalog. The
Manual Entry dialog is opened.

Delete Image Select this option to delete the selected image from the catalog.

View Select this menu for options that enable you to view the images in the catalog. You
can also view the image statistics.

Image Catalog

Graphical Query Viewer ... Select this option to open the Graphical Query dialog. This
dialog lets you view your image area against a vector backdrop map.

Form View ... Select this option to view all catalog records for an image on one screen
in the Form View dialog.

View Image (same Viewer) Select this option to display the selected image in a Viewer.
The first time this option is used, a new Viewer is created and the selected image is
displayed automatically. In subsequent used of this option, the image displayed in this
Viewer is replaced by the selected image. This option never uses an existing Viewer
unless it was created by this option.

If you want to view subsequent images you can either use this option or you can select
the View Image (new Viewer) option and the second image will be displayed in a new
Viewer.

View Image (new Viewer) Select this option to display an image in a new Viewer. Each
time this option is selected, a new Viewer is created. This option allows you to visually
compare two or more cataloged images.

Image Info ... Select this option to invoke the IMAGINE Image Info utility to view image
statistics. The Image Info dialog is opened.

Use Custom Layout ... Click to customize the CellArray layout using an existing layout
file (.lyt). The Use Layout dialog is opened.

Help Select this menu for On-Line Help options.


Help for Image Catalog Select this option to display On-Line Help about the Image
Catalog.

Click to open an existing catalog. The Open Catalog File dialog is opened.

Click to display the selected image in a Viewer. The first time this option is used, a new
Viewer is created and the selected image is displayed automatically. In subsequent used of
this option, the image displayed in this Viewer is replaced by the selected image. This option
never uses an existing Viewer unless it was created by this option.

Click to display an image in a new Viewer. Each time this option is selected, a new
Viewer is created. This option allows you to visually compare two or more cataloged images.

Click to invoke the IMAGINE Image Info utility to view image statistics. The Image Info
dialog is opened.

Click to add an image to the catalog. The Catalog Image dialog is opened.

Click to open the Graphical Query dialog. This dialog lets you view your image area
against a vector backdrop map.

Click to view all catalog records for an image on one screen in the Form View dialog.

Click to archive the selected image. The Archive dialog is opened. You must select an
image before this is a valid option.

Click to retrieve the selected image from the archive. The Restore dialog is opened.
You must select an image that has been archived (status = ARCHIVED) before this is a valid
option.

Click to manually add an image to the current catalog. The Manual Entry dialog is
opened.

Click to delete the selected image from the catalog.

(CellArray) The images in the catalog are displayed in a CellArray.


Right-hold in the Row column for the Row Selection popup. Right-hold on any column
heading for the Column Options popup.

No Catalog Warning

No Catalog Warning
This dialog is opened when you click the Image Catalog icon on the ERDAS IMAGINE icon
panel and IMAGINE was not able to locate a default catalog to open.

Default catalog was not found.

Open Click to open an existing catalog. The Open Catalog dialog is opened

New Click to create a new catalog. The New Catalog dialog is opened.
You must select this option the first time you use the Image Catalog.

Close Click to close the Image Catalog application.

Open Catalog

Open Catalog
This dialog enables you to open an existing catalog. It is opened when you select File | Open

Catalog from the Image Catalog menu bar or click the icon in the tool bar.

Select Catalog to Open: Use this file name part to select the catalog to open. The
default file extension is .cat.

OK Click to open the selected catalog and close this dialog.

Cancel Click to close this dialog without opening a catalog.

New Catalog

New Catalog
This dialog enables you to create a new catalog. It is opened when you select File | New Catalog
from the Image Catalog menu bar.

New Catalog Name: Enter a name for the new catalog. Existing catalogs are listed in
the file name part. The default file extension is .ict.

OK Click to create a new catalog and close this dialog.

Custom ... Click to add custom fields to the new catalog you are creating. The Custom
Field Definition dialog is opened.

Cancel Click to close this dialog without creating a new catalog.

Custom Field Definition

Custom Field Definition


This dialog enables you to add customized fields to a new catalog. It is opened when you select
Custom in the New Catalog dialog.

Field List: The fields defined in the current catalog are listed.
If you want to create a new field that is similar to an existing field, you can click on that field
and the other categories of the dialog will report the default settings of that field. Simply
modify those fields to create the new field. You can also create a new field “from scratch” by
entering information as described below.

Field Name: Enter the name of the field to define in the database. This is the name that
is opened in the header of that column in the Image Catalog CellArray.

Field Type: Click on the popup list button and select one of the data formats listed below.

Field Size: Enter the size of the field. This should be the largest size required for the type
of data stored.

Image Info Click to define a field to be extracted from the image automatically when
inserting into the catalog. This will enable the Node information group to define the location
of the field.

From Node: Enter the name of HFA layer where the field is defined.

Node Field: Enter the name of the field in the node to track in the Catalog.

Close Click to close this dialog.

Add Field Click to add the new field to the database. This field will be appended to the
end of the Field List.

Archive

Archive
This dialog allows you to archive an image in the catalog to a tape. You must select an image in
the catalog before choosing this option. From this dialog, you can also see the different types of
tapes that are logged into the database.

This dialog is opened when you select File | Archive from the Image Catalog menu bar or when

you click the icon in the tool bar.

Image: Reports the path and file name of the image to archive.

Size: Reports the size (in bytes) of the image to archive.

Space Available: Reports the amount of space available on the currently selected tape.
This number will be updated after the image is archived to reflect the remaining space
available.

Assist (archive) Tape Selection Lists the tapes currently logged into the database
that have enough space for the image you want to archive.

Log New Tape in Database Click this option if there are no tapes with adequate space
already logged into the database, or if you want to enter a new tape.

Media Type: Click on the popup list button to select the tape type to log into the
database.

File Count: The number of files on the selected tape is reported. This field is read-only.

Location: Enter the location of the selected tape.

Log Tape in Database Click to log this tape into the database. This tape will
automatically be given a unique label and it will appear in the tape selection list.

Archive... Click to archive the selected image. An Attention dialog is opened describing
the selected tape label, location, and type. From the Attention dialog, you may Continue or
Abort.

Archive

Search Click to search for tapes with adequate space for your image. This option is often
used after you have logged a new tape into the database and want to see what other tapes
are available.

Device... Click to select a new tape device. The Select Configured Devices dialog is
opened.

Close Click to close this dialog.

Restore

Restore
This dialog allows you to restore an archived image to the disk. It is opened when you select File|

Restore from the Image Catalog menu bar or when you click the icon in the tool bar.

Image: The name of the image to retrieve from archive.

Path: This field shows the path where the image will be stored. This path is specified in
the Preference Editor, but you can change it here if you desire.

Archive Info This group lists information about the archived file.
Label: Shows the tape label of the tape holding the file.
File Size: Lists the size of the file.

File Pos: Shows the position of the file on the tape.

Media: Lists the media type.

Location: Reports the location of the tape.

Information: The status of the restore operation is reported here.

Restore Click to restore the file.

Device... Click to select a new tape device. The Select Configured Devices dialog is
opened.

Cancel Click to cancel this process and close this dialog.

Select Configured Devices


This dialog allows you to specify an archival device (drive) for the selected type of storage media.
It is opened when you click Device in the Archive or Restore dialogs.

( default_device ) The default device as defined in the Preference Editor is listed.

Select Configured Devices: Select the device to use from the list of configured
devices in the list below. This list will vary depending on the configuration of your system.
Once you have logged a new tape into the database, you cannot delete it.

Select Click to use the selected device.

Cancel Click to close this dialog.

Catalog Layout

Catalog Layout
This dialog enables you to customize the layout of the Image Catalog CellArray by rearranging
the order of the columns. It is opened when you select Edit | Catalog Layout in the Image
Catalog menu bar.

Fields: The fields in the current catalog are listed. Click on a field to select it, then use the
options below to reposition it.

Up Click to move the selected column up one in the list.

Down Click to move the selected column down one in the list.

Top Click to move the selected column to the top of the list.

Bottom Click to move the selected column to the bottom of the list.

Show Click to enable a previously hidden field.


All Click to show all fields.

Hide Click to hide the selected column. Hidden columns will not appear when the Image
Catalog is open. Un-hide with the Show button.

All Click to hide all fields.

Reset Fields Reset field order back to default

Save: Click on the popup list button to save your changes.


User Only you (whenever you are logged into the same account) will be affected by the
changes to the catalog.

Global All IMAGINE users working from the same installation of IMAGINE will be
affected by these changes.

Save As... Save the layout to a file. The Save Layout to File dialog is opened

OK Click to apply all changes to the CellArray and close this dialog.

Cancel Click to close this dialog without making changes.

Save Layout to File

Save Layout to File


This dialog allows you to save a catalog layout to a file. It appears when you select Save | Save
As in the Catalog Layout dialog.

Layout Name: Use this file name part to enter a name for the catalog layout. The .lyt
extension will be added automatically.

OK Click to save this file and close this dialog.

Cancel Click to close this dialog without saving to a file.

Catalog Image

Catalog Image
This dialog allows you to add an image into the current catalog. It is opened when you select Edit

| Catalog Image from the Image Catalog menu bar or click the icon in the tool bar.

The dialog remains open until you click the Close button, so that you can add multiple images in
a single session.

Image to Catalog: Use this file name part to select the image to insert into the catalog.
The default file extension is .img.

Add Click to add the selected image to the current catalog.

Add All Click to add all images in the selected directory to the current catalog.

Close Click to close this dialog.

Manual Entry

Manual Entry
This dialog allows you to manually add a new record to the current catalog. This dialog is opened

when you select Edit | Manual Entry in the Image Catalog menu bar or click the icon in
the tool bar.

Add Click to add this new information to the catalog. Once you click Add, you can edit the
CellArray or clear it and enter another image, and the image previously entered will remain in
the catalog. This allows you to manually add several files to the catalog in the same session.

Clear Click to clear the contents of the CellArray.

Close Click to close this dialog.

Help Click to open this On-Line Help document.


Right-hold in the Row column for the Row Selection popup. Right-hold on any column
heading for the Column Options popup.

Graphical Query

Graphical Query
This dialog enables you to view the boundaries of the images in the current catalog over a vector
base map. You can roam and zoom in on the area shown using the same tools that you use in
other Viewers. You can also select an area in the graphical view and the images in the catalog
that fall in that area will be shown, both in the graphical view and in the Image Catalog CellArray.

This dialog is opened when you select View | Graphical Query Viewer from the Image Catalog

menu bar or when you click the icon in the tool bar.

File This menu lets you define and select specific coverage areas to view.
Area Definition ... Click to define or select a particular coverage area to view. The Area
Definition dialog is opened.

This is helpful if you have specific areas that you view often, and want to save those areas
to a file for quick access, rather than using the crop or zoom tools.

Close Click to close the graphical query window.

Edit These options allow you to place grid lines over the vector base map.
Toggle Grids Click to place grid lines over the graphical view if they are not already
present and turn them “off” if they are already there.

Grid Spacing ... Click to modify grid line spacing. The Grid Spacing dialog is opened.

Toggle Map Outlines Enable/Disable Map Outlines

Clear Query Click to clear any image boundaries from the graphical view. Any selected
images in the Image Catalog CellArray will also by deselected.

View The View options enable you to query for images in your database.
Query within current extents Click to display image boundaries that fall within the area
shown in the graphical view. These images will also be highlighted in the Image Catalog
CellArray.

Reset Display Click to restore the graphical view to the original default backdrop
coverage.

Coverage Information... Click to view information about the vector layer currently used.
The Coverage Information dialog is opened.

Help Click to open this On-Line Help document.

Graphical Query

About the Graphical Query

Click to define or select a particular coverage area to view. The Area Coverage dialog
is opened.

This is helpful if you have specific areas that you view often, and want to save those areas to
file for quick access, rather than using the crop or zoom tools.

Click to place grid lines over the graphical view if they are not already present and turn
them “off” if they are already there.

Enable/Disable Map Outlines

Click to restore the graphical view to the original default coverage.

Click to display image boundaries that fall within the area shown in the graphical view.
These images will also be highlighted in the Image Catalog CellArray.

Click to clear any image boundaries from the graphical view. Any selected images in
the Image Catalog CellArray will also be deselected.

The select tool allows you to select areas in the graphical view. Click on an area and if
there are images of that area in the database, the boundary will be drawn in the graphical
view and that image will be highlighted in the Image Catalog CellArray.

You can also left-hold to draw a rectangular marquee, and any images in that fall in that area
will be shown in the graphical view and in the CellArray.

The crop tool enables you to left-hold to indicate a specific area to zoom. When you
release the mouse, the area that you have selected will be redisplayed in the graphical view.

Roam the Map

Coverages Used

There is a set of default vector maps that are delivered with ERDAS IMAGINE, but you can easily
add other vector layers, so that there is more detail available in your study area(s).

To add additional coverages, simply add the file names of these new vector layers to the
catalog.cov file in the <IMAGINE_HOME>/etc directory.

The coverage that comes up when you first start the Image Catalog is specified in the
Preference Editor under Catalog. Other coverages are automatically used when you zoom into
that area. For example, if you are studying the United Kingdom and have a detailed coverage of
London that you would like to use, then you can add the London coverage to the catalog.cov file.
Then when you zoom in on the London area, that coverage will be used.

The default colors used in the coverages are also defined in the Preference Editor.

Area Definition

Area Definition
This option enables you to store graphical backdrops of particular areas of interest for quick
retrieval. For example, if your study area covers the states of North and South Dakota, you could
save a view of just that area. This dialog is opened when you select File | Area Coverage from

the Graphical Query menu bar or when you click the icon in the tool bar.

X: The upper left longitude of coverage.

Y: The upper left latitude of coverage.

X: The lower right longitude of coverage.

Y: The lower right latitude of coverage.

Upper Left Enter the upper left corner coordinates of the area to define. If you have
selected an existing area in the file name part on the left side of the dialog, then the
coordinates of that area are reported here.

To create a new area, you can enter the coordinates manually, or use the Use Viewer option
to define the area graphically.

Lower Right Enter the lower right corner coordinates of the area to define. If you have
selected an existing area in the file name part on the left side of the dialog, then the
coordinates of that area are reported here.

To create a new area, you can enter the coordinates manually, or use the Use Viewer option
to define the area graphically.

Apply Zoom to the selected area.

Open... Click to open a pre-defined area definition.

Save... Click to save the defined coverage to file. This option is enabled only after you enter
a name for the file.

Cancel Click to close this dialog.

Grid Spacing

Grid Spacing
This dialog enables you to define the grid spacing used on the Graphical Query option. It is
opened when you select Edit | Grid Spacing from the Graphical Query menu bar.

Degree: Enter the spacing of the grid lines in degrees.

Set Click to apply the new spacing and redraw the grid lines.

Close Click to close this dialog without resetting the grid spacing.

Coverage Information

Coverage Information
This dialog reports information about the currently displayed vector layer in the Graphical Query
Viewer. It is opened when you select View | Coverage Information in the Graphical Query
menu bar.

Point Count: Shows the number of points in the current vector layer.

Arc Count: Shows the number of lines (arcs) in the current vector layer.

Polygon Count: Shows the number of polygons in the current vector layer.

Cancel Click to close this dialog.

Form View

Form View
This dialog gives you all of the default information about an image in the database on one page.
It also includes archival information. This dialog is opened when you select View | Form View in

the Image Catalog menu bar or when you click the icon in the tool bar.

The record that is displayed in this dialog is also highlighted in the Image Catalog CellArray.

☞ Only the default fields will be opened in this form view. If you have defined custom fields, they
will not appear in the form view.

File Data Information about the selected image is reported in this group.
Image: The name of the image.
Type: The type of image: thematic or athematic (continuous).

Projection: The projection of the image. This field is blank if the image is not
georeferenced.

Status: The archival status of the image. ONLINE means that the image has not been
archived. ARCHIVED means that the image has been archived.

User: The name of the user who cataloged the image.

Upper Left The upper left X and Y coordinates of the image are reported.

X: The upper left X coordinate.

Y: The upper left Y coordinate.

Lower Right The lower right X and Y coordinates of the image are reported.

X: The lower right X coordinate.

Y: The lower right Y coordinate.

Units: The units used for the coordinates are reported.

Rows: The number of rows in the image.

Cols: The number of columns in the image.

Layers: The number of layers in the image.

Bits: The data type of the image.

Date: The date the image was added to the catalog.

Archive Data This group lists the archival information.


Label: The tape label.

File Size: The file size.

File Pos: The file position on the tape.

Location: The location of the tape.

Media: The media onto which the file is archived.

By: The name of the person who archived the image.

Date: The date the image was archived.

Use Layout

Use Layout
This dialog allows you to use a custom CellArray layout that was created with the Edit | Catalog
Layout option and saved to a layout file (.lyt). This dialog is opened when you select View | Use
Custom Layout from the Image Catalog menu bar.

Layout Name: Use this file name part to enter the name of the layout file to use. The
default file extension is .lyt.

OK Click to use this layout file and close this dialog.

Cancel Click to close this dialog without loading a layout file.
