CAUTIONS
The information given in this manual is the best available at the time of
issue, but must be used with discretion. The text in this manual does not
override statutory requirements concerning work practices or safety
precautions.

Do not run the radar with the semi-rigid co-axial cable disconnected;
damage to the Receiver will occur.

Removal of printed circuit boards with power connected can damage

JFETs and Integrated Circuits.

The circuitry used on the equipment PCBs utilises CMOS Integrated

Circuits. All the relevant CMOS precautions must be taken to avoid
damage to CMOS circuitry when any board is removed.

The equipment should be serviced by qualified agents only.

v
IMPORTANT NOTICES
HEALTH AND SAFETY
All personnel are required to study these notices and familiarise themselves with all
applicable safety precautions and bring them to the attention of others in the vicinity.

HIGH VOLTAGE WARNING

A current of 100 mA passing through the human body for one second can kill. This can
occur at voltages as low as 35 Vac or 50 Vdc. Some equipment in the system uses electrical
power that can be lethal. Whenever practical, before carrying out installation,
maintenance or repair, personnel involved must:

• Isolate the equipment from the electrical supply.

• Make tests to verify that the isolation is complete.

• Ensure that power cannot be accidentally reconnected.

If it is essential to work on the equipment with power connected, work must only be
undertaken by qualified personnel who are fully aware of the danger involved and who
have taken adequate safety precautions to avoid contact with dangerous voltages.

HEALTH HAZARD

The inhalation of dust and fumes or any contact with lubricants when cleaning the
equipment may be temporarily harmful to health, depending on individual allergic
reactions. Components which are broken or overheated may release toxic fumes or dust
and must be treated with caution. Do not inhale the fumes and ensure that the dust and
debris do not enter open cuts or abrasions. It is prudent to regard all damaged components
as being potentially toxic, requiring careful handling and appropriate disposal.

RADIATION HAZARD : NON-IONISING

It is accepted in most countries that no significant hazard is presented by radio frequency

mean power density levels up to 10mW/cm2. RF power levels in excess of this may cause
harmful effects, particularly to the eyes.

Users of cardiac pacemakers should be aware that radio frequency transmissions, can
damage some such devices or cause irregularities in their operation. Persons using a
pacemaker should ascertain whether their device is likely to be affected before exposing
themselves to the risk of malfunction.

IMPORTANT NOTICES
HEALTH AND SAFETY
SAFETY ALOFT

When working aloft, ensure that it is brought to the attention of someone in authority at
deck or at ground level and that suitably placed warning notices are posted warning that
work aloft is in progress. Ensure that the means of access aloft is secure and beware of wet
or slippery ladder rungs and working areas.

When working on or near a radar scanner and other moving or r.f. radiating equipment,
ensure that it is switched off and that the fuses have been removed and retained.

PERSONAL PROTECTION

Personal protection must be used whenever the possibility of an uncontrolled hazard

exists. For example, a suitable face visor, gloves and a body apron should be worn when
handling cathode ray tubes, as a precaution against injury in the event of breakage.

vii
AMENDMENT RECORD

When an amendment is incorporated into this publication, the details should be recorded
below. Where the equipment has been modified, the modification number shown on the
Amendment Instruction Sheet is also to be recorded.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

INTRODUCTION

1 This manual provides additional information specific to the Low Profile Antenna
(LPA-A1) when used with a Kelvin Hughes MKVI turning mechanism with either an up-
or down-mast tranceiver and should be read in conjunction with either the Nucleus Radar System
Manual, KH2020, chapter 4d or the Manta Radar System Manual KH2026, chapter 4.

2 The installation of the turning mechanism does not change with the type of antenna fitted.
The procedures given in the above publications should be followed.

INSTALLATION

GENERAL

1 This section provides installation information for Low profile Antenna as part of a new
installation with a new turning mechanism or retrofitting to an existing MK6 turning
mechanism.

Observe the Health and Safety Notices at the front of this manual.

2 Mains supplies in the vicinity of the transceiver are to be isolated when installing the
equipment.

3 A suitable safety platform or harness should be used when working aloft.

4 Safety personnel must ensure that persons do not enter the area of work.

LIFTING

5 It is recommended that lifting slings are used in an arrangement similar to those shown in
Figure 1 to position the low profile antenna.

NEW INSTALLATION

6 There are two versions of the MkVI S-Band Transceiver:

(1) 30kW S-Band, Upmast (CAE-A37).

(2) 30kW S-Band, Downmast (CTX-A7).

Upmast System

7 The upmast systems incorporate the transceiver electronics in the antenna turning
mechanism.

Downmast System

8 The electronics for the downmast system are housed in a separate bulkhead mounted
enclosure. The downmast transceiver is connected to the turning mechanism, via
semi-rigid co-axial cable.

9 Two versions of the turning mechanism are provided with downmast systems:

(1) 25 rpm CAE-A42.

(2) 50 rpm CAE-A41.
10 The 25 rpm turning mechanism is used for normal applications. The 50 rpm turning
mechanism is used for high speed craft.

11 For installation purposes, the speed of the mechanism makes no difference.

12 Install the turning Mechanism as described in either KH2020 or KH2026 and then secure
the antenna to the swing casting using the 12, M10x45mm bolts, washers and spring coil
washers supplied. These bolts must be prevented from loosening by the application of Loctite
222 on their treads during assembly and tightened to a torque of 56 Nm.

13 Fit the 4, self clinching nuts and plain washers to the 4 studs on the antenna.

14 Connect the antenna's waveguide to the turning mechanism's rotating joint using the
O-ring and nuts, washers and bolts supplied in the connection kit ZV-9758.

Chapter 2
Retrofit Installation

15 The LPA must only be fitted to a turning mechanism with a swing casting type
CAE-1660. This can be identified by a double rib along each side and its number cast into
the underside. Earlier single rib castings MUST be removed and changed to a CAE-1660 before
installing a LPA.

16 On retro fit installations, two LPA interface brackets are required to mount between the
existing swing casting and the antenna as shown in figure 2. These are supplied ready
fitted to the antenna with 12 M10 x 45mm bolts secured with Loctite 222 and 4 M6 self clinching
nuts.

17 Fit the complete assembly to the swing casting and secure using the 4, M10 x 55mm bolts
and self locking nuts, ensuring that an M10 plain washer is fitted under the nut and the
bolt head.

18 Connect the antenna's waveguide to the turning mechanism's rotating joint using the new
O-ring and nuts, washers and bolts supplied in the connection kit ZV-9758.

CLEANING

19 To clean the Low Profile Antenna, a mild detergent with lukewarm water and a soft cloth
or sponge should be used. Always rinse thoroughly with clean water. Ethyl Alcohol may
be used sparingly to remove paint and other substances. This should always be washed off and
rinsed thoroughly afterwards.
