Grow and Be Like a Molave

By Manuel L. Quezon

… where empowered school heads produce great schools

14
National strength can only be built on character. A nation is nothing more
or less than its citizenry. It is the people that make up the nation, and therefore,
a nation cannot be stronger than its component parts. Their weakness is its
failings, their strength its power. Show me a people of vigorous, sturdy individuals,
of men and women healthy in mind and body. They are courteous, brave, indus-
trious, self-reliant, purposeful in thought as well as in righteousness, with high
social ideas and a strong moral fiber... And I will show you a great nation that will
be submerged. This nation will emerge victorious from the trials and bitter strifes
of a distracted world, a nation that will live forever. This nation will share the com-
mon task of advancing the welfare and promoting the happiness of mankind.
The upward climb of mankind has been universal. In the human landscape
, there are peaks and valleys and deep chasms. Generally there is a need for potent
social upheavels, volcanic in proportions, to raise the lower levels to great heights.
The battle for existence and the survival of the fittest is ever the rule of life
in nature and among men.
Our task...it is a heroic task to awaken and apply these faculties. Then our
people should become what is right they should be: morally virile, hard-working
, refined, enterprising, persevering, public- spirited.
I want our people to grow and be like the molave strong and resilient, rising
on the hillside, unafraid of the raging flood, the lighting, or the storm, confident of
its strength. If we have the will to survive and the will to achieve social efficiency,
we cannot delay this task of spiritual revival. Let us begin now to mold the typical
Filipino.
We are oriental. Orientals are known for their placidity and passivity. In the
world of humanity we are looked upon as a quiet and smooth lake from which the
adventurous and enterprising may reap enjoyment and gain. I refuse to allow the
Filipinos to be regarded.
We shall be flowing stream, a rippling brook, a deep and roaring torrent,
full of life, of hope, of faith and of strength. Though self-discipline we shall harness
all our energies. Then our power, spreading over the length and breadth of this
land, will develop its resources, advance its culture, secure social justice, and give
puissance to the nation. It will insure happiness and contentment for all the people
under the aegis of liberty and peace.

Direction: Identify the point view of the author.

1. The essay begins with the sentence, "National strength can be built on character".
What does Quezon want to say?
2. Why did he use the molave for his comparison?
3. What is your realization about today's youth? Do they resemble that of the youth in
Queson's time?
4. When can we say that nation is strong?
5. What important values did Quezon emphasize in his speech? How do you apply
these values in your life?

"Within My Fold"

Every refuse expressed willingness to go. It was midnight the dump trucks
would arrive to dispose them in the landfill.
Most of them were asleep now. Only the broken picture frame and the tattered
newspaper could not find asleep yet.
"How are you, Mr. Frame?", ask the newspaper. "Can't you see, I'm sad", he
retorted. "I'm s-sorry. Are you? But why? The picture frame sighed and looked across
the room. He fixed his eyes on the wall.
"You know" he began, the world isn't at all a park to stroll in. Conflicts arise
and before you are aware, you're involved."
"I cannot understand," said the newspaper.
"It's a long story," the frame paused.
"They framed me at first and then, they hanged me." The newspaper looked up
frowned a bit and sounded "Ah". He wanted to investigate further but the frame
centered.
"How about you, Mr. Newspaper?. "My life has been spent in busy streets", he
said.
"Are you not exhausted? I mean...? The frame gestured what he meant.
"There have been times, you know. Who is not? Said the newspaper. But if
there was something that sustained me, it's the principle to stand and unblemished no
matter what.
The newspaper continued, "I have been a witness to history and the outcries
upon generations of heroes. People grab me eagerly only when scandals, voilence,
disasters, political rifts or bickering arise. Sometimes, Mr. Frame, I also feel trampled
upon.
Why am I used to display the controversial, the hypes and pretenses, the
incandescent pictures, the poison letters, the propaganda...Those greedy and deceiving
advertisements.
"So life to have been that bad?"
"Of course not at all that bad. Softy ideas have been contained in my pages.
Those opinions I have borned are clear and decisive, even inspiring, the sports,

leisure, lifestyle, the movei guides and even the horoscopes. All of them have helped
me maintain my balance against all odds."
The frame hold, "tell me some more, I'm interested," he answered.
The door opened, the dump trucks had arrived. "Ready for loading men, a man
shouted. Every trash knows, it is time to be buried in landfill.

" The Emperor's Nightingale" by Han Christian Anderson.
Think and answer the following questions.

The Emperor's Nightingale

In China, you must know, the Emperor is a Chairman and all whom he has
about him are Chinamen, too.It happened a good many years ago, but that's just why
it's worth while to hear the story, before it is forgotten. The Emperor's palace was the
most splendid in the world; it was made entirely of porcelain, very costly, but so
delicate and brittle than one had to take care how one touched it. In the garden were to
be seen the most wonderful flowers, and to the costliest of them silver bells were tied,
which sounded, so that nonody should pass by without noticing the flowers.Yes,
everything in the Emperor's garden was admirably arranged. And it extended so far,
that the gardener himself did not know where the end was. If a man went on and on,
he came into a glorious forest with high trees and deep lakes. The wood extended
straight down to the sea, which was blue and deep; great ships could sail to and fro
beneath the branches of the trees; and in the trees lived a nightingale, which sang so
splendidly that even the poor Fisherman, who had many other things to do, stopped
still and listened, when he had gone out at night to throw out his nets, and heard the
nightingale. " How beautiful that is!" he said; but he was obliged to attend to his
property, and thus forgot the bird. BUt when in the next night the bird sang again, and
the fisherman heard it, he exclaimed again," how beautiful that is!" From all the
countries of the world travelers came to the city of the Emperor and admired it, and
the palace, and the garden, but when they heard the nightingale, they said, " that is the
best of all!"And the travelers told of it when they came home; and the learned men
wrote many books about the town, the palace, and the garden. But they did not forget
the nightingale; that was placed highest of all; and those who were poets wrote most
magnificent poems about the nightingale in the wood by the deep lake.

Two drums which are important in bands or ochestras are the snare drum and the bass
drum. Both drums are made of wood and calfskin. They are palyed with two sticks.
However, some of their differences lie in their shape and kinds of sticks used to beat
them. The snare drum has a cylindrical shape and is made od wood or brass covered
at each end with tightly stretched calfskin. the side on which the player beats is called
the "batter head" and the lower side the "snare head". The bass drum on the other
hand, is made of wooden shell covered with calfskin which can be tightened by metal
