MODULE 5.

COMPUTER NETWORKS

A. Introduction:
The convergence of communication systems with computing and other technologies
have brought about the digitization of the telephone and other telecommunications
networks. In this module, you will learn networks, its components and how are computers
are now linked with one another, making it possible to communicate and share resources
with anyone, anytime, anywhere.

B. Objectives:

At the end of this module, students should be able to:

1. define what is a network ;
2. identify the components of a network;
3. describe the different types of networks ;
4. discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the different LAN topologies;

C. Learning Content:

 What is a network?
 Advantages and Disadvantages of
Networks  What are the components
of a Network?  What is an Intranet?

D. Pre-Test:

1. What is a network?
2. What do you think are the reasons why we use network?
3. What is the difference between a LAN and a WAN?

E. Learning Activities:

What is a network?
A network is a collection of computers, communications hardware and software linked
together to allow sharing of resources and to provide a facility for communication.
The following are reasons for using networks:

Communication
Accessing resources
• Data and information
• Printers and scanners
• Software
• Labour and money
• Other hardware resources
Centralization of data
• Transfer of files
• Increased productivity
• Leisure

Advantages and Disadvantages Of Networks

What are the components of a Network?

• Computer systems with network card

• Communications software
• Networking and Internetworking devices
• Data / Information
• Networked / shared resources
• Users

What are the different kinds of networks?

• A personal area network (or PAN) covers a very small area. This type of network
connects devices within a certain range and if you move outside of that range, the
connection can be lost. For example, connecting your smartphone to a wireless speaker,
headphones, or other wireless device.

• A home area network (or HAN) is a computer network that covers a larger area like your
home. For example, connecting to a printer from anywhere in your house.

• Local Area Network (LAN) – a network that serves users within a confined area such as a
building or a campus

• Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) – covers a geographic area the size of a city

• Wide Area Network (WAN) – covers a wide geographical area such as a country or the
entire globe. The Internet is the best example of a WAN.

Types of LAN

• Peer to peer - all computers on the network communicate and

share resources directly with one another.

• Client Server - consist of clients, computers requesting files or

applications, and server(s) that provide applications and
services to other computers.

Topologies of LAN

Networks can be laid out in a different logical layout or shape called a topology. The basic LAN
topologies are:

• Star – all computers are connected to a server or a hub

• Ring – all computers are connected in a continuous loop

• Bus – all computers are connected to a common
channel

 Mesh topology- is a network configuration where devices are

interconnected in a decentralized manner. Instead of relying on a
central hub or switch, each device connects directly to multiple other
devices, forming a mesh-like structure.

What is a WAN?

A WAN is a computer network that has more than one file server and which covers a
bigger geographical area than a room or a building. Local area networks grouped together form
a WAN. They are connected in several ways through gateways, routers, and other networking
and internetworking devices.

What are the components of a WAN?

• LANs
• Modems
• Cables
• Bridges
• Gateways
• Microwave relays
• Satellite transmission
• Communications software
• Protocols

Applications

• Electronic Banking
• Electronic Bulletin Boards
• Electronic Mail
• Voice Mail
• Teleconferencing
• Online information services
• Telecommuting
• Internet

What is an Intranet?

Intranets use Internet standards, protocols and technologies to provide a closed network
within an organization. An Intranet is an internal corporate network that provides access to
information and allows communication limited only to within an organization.

What are some trends and issues confronting networks?

• Security
• Intellectual property rights
• Copyright
• Information resources
• Privacy
• Technological limitations

F. Assessment:

I. Direction: Choose from a peer-to-peeror client-server network. In each case you must
provide an argument to support your choice.

______________a.Four friends get together to host a LAN party at one of their houses.
______________b.A school that has two computer labs used for both CAT and IT and where
the educators and administrative staff all use the same network.
______________c.The local dentist office where there is one computer in reception and one in
each of the two dentists’ offices.
______________d.A temporary network that is being set up to run a large craft market for a
week. There will be eight different computers set up in the management office to run the
inventory and sales.

II. Direction: Choose a term/concept from COLUMN B that matches a description in COLUMN
A. Write only the letter on the space provided.

I. Create a list of network and internetworking devices and provide a brief description /
definition of each device. Enumerate as many as you can and provide pictures if possible.
