VOLLEYBALL

Brief History of the Game


 William G. Morgan – the creator of the game and was originated from Halyoke, Massachusetts,
USA.
 Mintonette – old name of the game.
 Dr. Halstead of Springfield, USA – changed the name “Mintonette” to “Volleyball” and blend
elements of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball.
 Basketball – idea of the Ball
 Baseball – idea for the sets
 Tennis – idea of the net
 Handball – idea of the use of hands

 July 7, 1896 – first game of “volleyball” was played at Springfield College


 Volleyball was originally 2 words (volley ball) but spelled into a single word in 1952
 1900 – new specially designed ball: lighter and smaller
 1964 – was introduced to the Olympic games (round-robin format)
 1913 – growth including the first Far Eastern Games in Manila
 1917 – 21 to 15 points per set
 1918 – number of players per team was set at 6

 New offensive way of playing: setting and spiking, emerged in PH called “Bomba” or “Filipino
Bomb”
 Apr. 1947 – FIVB (Federation Volleyball Internationale)
 1st VB Championships
o Men – 1949 in Prague
o Women – 1952 in Moscow

Volleyball Equipment
1. Volleyball – 81 cm (32 inch) in circumference and weigh no more than 226 grams (8 ounces). The
inside pressure shall be 0.30-0.32 kg/cm2 (4.26-4.61 psi). (leather or synthetic leather)
2. Court – 9 by 18 cm (29ft 6inches by 59 ft)
3. Nets - Men’s Net Height: 2.43 meters (7ft 11 5/8 inches) and Women’s Net Height: 2.24 meters (7ft
4 1/8 inches).
- Official Net: 1 meter (39 inches) wide and 9.5-10 meters (31ft 6 inches to 33ft) long
(with 25-50 cm [10 inches to 19 ½ inches] on each of the side bands), mad of 10 cm
(4 inch) square black mesh. Top horizontal band: 7 cm (2 ¾ inches) wide and made of
two-fold white canvas.
a. Antennae – 1.80 meters (5ft 11 inches) in length, and the top 80cm (32 inches) extends
above the net (10 cm stripes – white and red)
b. Net standards – placed at a distance .50-1.0 meters (20 inches – 39 inches) outside the
sidelines. 2.25 (8ft 4 inches) high.
