ABSTRACT. This study aimed to assess the Effect of oil price hike to the motorcycle
riders and commuters in Saint Anthony’s College: The study employed the
descriptive research design using the survey technique in which all data needed
were gathered at one time. Descriptive design was employed because this study only
aimed at the problems encountered by consumer behavior of oil prices hike in Sta.
Ana, Cagayan. The target population was the consumer of oil in Sta. Ana, Cagayan.
They were asked to answer both closed and open-ended questions. The
respondents of the study composed of one hundred (100) Motorcycle Riders and
commuters in Saint Anthony’s College, and a questionnaire were used for data
collection. It also aims to provide possible solution for the residents to find the best
alternatives for this issue. The study findings revealed that the majority of the
respondents’ age ranges from 18 and above, male and female and they own
vehicles. The impact of an increase in oil prices on people’s expenditure on heating
depends highly on their age, family size and current spending on heating, the larger
these variables are in value the higher the impact of increase in oil prices on people.
The cost of oil has long been a major factor in the global economy, affecting
everything from transportation to food prices. for motorcycle riders and commuters in
St. Anthony, s College, the recent oil price hike has had significant impact on their
daily lives. With motorcycles and public transportation being the primary modes of
transport for many individuals in this community, even a small increase in oil prices
can have ripple effects that can be felt throughout the entire economy. This paper will
explore the various ways in which pricing oil prices are effecting motorcycle riders
and commuters; in St. Anthony, s College, and will examine the potential long-term
consequences of these price hikes on the local community. by delving into these
issues, we can gain a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between oil
prices transportation and economic well-being.
The cost of oil is a crucial factor in the global economy, with fluctuation in oil
prices impacting everything from energy production to food prices. rising oil prices
can have significant consequences for communities around the world, particularly
those that rely heavily on transportation for daily activities. St. Anthony’s college is
one such community, where many individuals rely on motorcycles in public
transportations to get to school, work, and other activities
6
Moreover, previews studies have ‘shown that the impact of oil price increases
goes beyond just the cost of fuel. For example, study by the Asian development t
bank (2016) found that rising oil prices can also lead to implication in other sectors of
the economy, including food prices, as transportation cost increase this can have a
cascading effect on the economy, leading to reduced purchasing power for
consumers and a decline in overall economy activity.
The objective of the study is to determine the effect of oil prices on motorcycle
riders for small rural transit agencies. The secondary objectives are to examine the
long-run implication and to determine if there are different types of transit operations.
The results of this study are important because they provide some insight into the
ability of transit agencies to survive under rising fuel costs. A significant increase in
fare revenue resulting from increased ridership would allow transit agencies to
continue operating without making substantial changes but if fare revenues do not
increase sufficiently then transit agencies may need to investigate an increase in
fares or a decrease in service or they may need to seek additional public fund.
The current study intends to determine the effect of oil price hikes to the
motorcycle riders and commuters in Saint Anthony’s College. Specifically, it seeks to
answer the following questions:
(1) What is the profile of the respondents?
(2) Is there a significant effect of oil price hike to the motorcycle riders in Saint
Anthony’s college?
(3) What are the coping mechanisms to decrease the impact of oil price hike to
the students?
Hypothesis
When fuel prices increased in 2000, there were concern about the impact on
the transport sector. Therefore, it was considered worthwhile to simulate the effects
of a significant and durable change in oil prices on transport demand, and transport
externalities. When gasoline prices increase, the amount a consumer is willing to pay
for a more fuel-efficient vehicle should increase. In fact, there is evidence that when
gasoline prices increase. Demand for less fuel-efficient vehicles false, as consumers
demand higher fuel economy to reduce the cost of driving. in this new generation,
more inventions are becoming available in the merchandise. As a response, almost
all have their own private service to avoid much expenses in field of transportation.
its affect might have both positive and negative impact on the mindset of the riders
dealing with this kind of situation.
This study let the officials help and guide the riders who suffer the changes in
oil prices, for them to know what happens to our surroundings, this study may help
the future researcher to make a further study that they may be able to discover and
7
proven further that oil pricing could affect the behavior of the College Student, finally
the findings of the study would provide a database for further research work.
Literature Review
Oil price hike higher cost of commodities since we have established that oil
prices are tied to other commodities in the market, price hikes also mean a higher
cost of living. A side from paying more for the same amount of gasoline, prices of
food, fares and other daily expenses may also rise.
According to (Kolaczkowoski, 2022), one of the main reasons for the rise in oil
prices is geopolitical tensions and instability. Tensions between countries may lead to
instability, resulting in a delay in oil production and a shortage of oil supply.
According to Killan and Vega (2011), gasoline price shock is identified based
on the assumption that the nominal price of gasoline is predetermined with respect to
the other model variables. This assumption is supported by empirical evidences.
Binder, et al (2018), stated that this model recognizes that it is gasoline prices rather
than the price of crude oil that enter the consumer basket and that the gasoline price
is what matters for the determination of household inflation expectation because of its
silence.
De Vera, Ocampo, Subingsubing, and Salaverria (2022), stated that, oil prices
rose in the Philippines thanks to the constricted supply of oil imports creating
inconveniences for Filipinos, specifically for the transportation sector. The pricing per
liter increased at PHP 13.15 for diesel, PHP 7.10 for gasoline, and PHP 10.50 for
kerosene This phenomenon did not only affect the country, but the rest of the world
as well with market rebounds and oil prices upped at 8% (Rappler, 2022).
When fuel prices increased in 2000, there were concerns about the impact on
the transport sector. Therefore, it was considered worthwhile to simulate the effects
of a significant and durable change in oil prices on transport cost, transport demand,
and transport externalities. When gasoline prices increase, the amount a consumer is
willing to pay for a more fuel-efficient vehicle should increase. In fact, there is
evidence that when gasoline prices increase, demand for less fuel-efficient vehicles
falls, as consumers demand higher fuel economy to reduce the cost of driving. In this
new generation, more inventions are becoming available in the merchandise. As a
response, almost all have their own private service to avoid much expenses in field of

transportation. Its effect might have both positive and negative impact on the mindset
of the riders dealing with this kind of situation.

METHODS
Research Design
This study implemented the descriptive survey design. This design used a
face-to-face interview and survey questionnaires which are distributed to the
respondents in order to attain the main purpose or objective of the study which is to
know and examine the effect of oil price hike to the motorcycle riders and commuters
in Saint Anthony’s College. The survey or the research study itself was conducted
and had an objective to try to describe, analyze and interpret the status or
perspective of the respondent.
The study entitled “The Effect of Oil Price Hikes to the Motorcycle
Riders and commuters in Saint Anthony’s College” was conducted at Saint
Anthony’s College Santa Cruz, Santa Ana, Cagayan Valley, Philippines in the
school year 2022-2023.

respondents for the study. According to Zulueta and Costales (n.d.), the sampling
units are selected subjectively by the researcher. In this study, since the researchers
goal is to determine the effect of oil price hike in motor cycle riders and commuters,
the researchers believed that this method is the most appropriate in choosing the
sample for the research.
Instrumentation
The researchers used self-made questionnaire although the research
instrument is quantitative in the oil price hikes, the researcher deemed it a need to
give 100 respondents per interview. This is done so that each question can be
explained in layman’s terms by the researcher in case some respondents might have
difficulty in understanding. This is also done to ensure that all items were answered
correctly for the level of performance, the researchers retrieved permission that has
been given. The interpretation of the institutional is a tool used to correlate with the
other variables
Data Analysis
The data that had been collected was quantitative using frequency count and
percentage to identify problems encountered by the oil price of the motorcycle riders
of Saint Anthony’s College.
Ethical Considerations
This research is done by the approval of the Honorable Mayor Nelson
Robinion of Santa Ana and the educational institution of Saint Anthony’s College thru
School President Sr. Ellen Labrador, AS. The procedure was done with transparency
and the aim of the research were clear to the target respondents who are pure
residents of the said locality. Their identity is safe and protected and their responses
were all recorded. The documentation processes were all done with consent and
done blatant.

RESULTS
Tables 1. Profile of the Respondents
The table above shows the profile of the respondents. It includes the age
range, sex, year level, department courses, civil status, weekly allowance, and
source of allowance. As shown in the table, 60% of the respondents age range is 21-
20 years’ old. Likewise, 60% of the respondents are males. On the other hand,
majority of the respondents is first year college with 35% and 50% of them come
from the BSBA department. Additionally, 80% of the respondents are single.
Furthermore, 60% of the respondents have 1000 pesos’ weekly allowance given by
their parents as the major financial provider.
11
Table 2. Consumer items cut or decrease in consumption because of the oil
price hike.
The table above shows the consumer items cut or decrease in consumption because
of oil price hike. The results show that the highest percentage of item to decrease in
consumption is food which has 44%. In addition, personal and beauty products is
next to less consumption with 21% followed by the clothing and apparel with 18%.
Furthermore, travelling expenses decreased in 12% since this is one of the major
daily needs of the respondents going to school. Moreover, communication expenses
have decreased only in 5%. It means that the respondents spending more in buying
cellular loads for communication and internet connectivity. On the other hand,
beverages, medicine/pharmaceutical products and school supplies are not
decreased in consumption because these are the most essential needs of the
respondents.
Table 3. Coping mechanism to decrease the impact of oil price hike to the
students.
The table above shows the coping mechanism to decrease the impact of oil
price hike to the students. It reveals that having no snacks has the highest
percentage with 18%. It means that students opted not to buy their snacks to save
money for other finances. Most likely, discipline on buying products between needs
and wants has 15% due to basic daily needs. On the other hand, using alternative
products with 6% has the least option in coping mechanism. This means that due to
rapid inflation rate of products, the consumers have less option alternatively.
DISCUSSIONS
Based on the gathered data, it shows that the majority of respondents fall
within the age range of 21-30, with a frequency of 60. This suggests that the opinions
and behaviors of this age group may be particularly important to consider when
examining the impact of an oil price hike on the college community. On the other
hand, the age range of 18-20 has a frequency of 31, indicating that a significant
proportion of respondents are in their late teenage years. This group may have a
unique perspective on the issue as they may be newer drivers who are more
impacted by changes in fuel prices. Further, the age range of 31-35 has a frequency
12
of only 10, suggesting that this group is less represented in the sample. However, it is
still important to consider their opinions and behaviors, as they may have different
perspectives on the issue based on their life experiences and responsibilities.
Overall, it is important to examine the impact of an oil price hike on the St. Anthony's
college community across different age groups, as each group may have unique
perspectives and needs that should be considered in any response to the issue.
Additionally, the results reveal that 60% of the respondents were male, while
40% were female. While this data doesn't provide a detailed breakdown of the
individual experiences and opinions of each gender, it does suggest that any analysis
of the impact of an oil price hike on the college community should consider the
potential differences between male and female perspectives. For example, males
may be more likely to drive larger or more fuel-intensive vehicles, while females may
be more likely to use public transportation or carpool with others. Similarly, males
may have different economic concerns or priorities than females, which could impact
their attitudes toward changes in fuel prices. It is important to note, however, that
gender is just one factor that can impact an individual's experiences and
perspectives. Other factors such as age, income level, and employment status can
also play a role. Therefore, any analysis of the impact of an oil price hike should
consider a range of demographic factors to ensure that the needs and concerns of all
members of the college community are taken into account.
On the other hand, it reveals that the largest group of respondents were first-
year students with a frequency of 35. This suggests that the opinions and behaviors
of first-year students may be particularly important to consider when examining the
impact of an oil price hike on the college community. These students may be new to
the area and have different travel patterns or economic circumstances compared to
students in higher year levels. The second-largest group of respondents was 44th-
year students with a frequency of 30. This group may have different perspectives on
the issue, as they may be nearing graduation and have different priorities and
concerns than younger students. The third-largest group of respondents was second-
year students with a frequency of 20, followed by third-year students with a frequency
of 15. While these groups are smaller, it is still important to consider their opinions
and behaviors, as they may have unique perspectives on the issue based on their
experiences in college thus far. Overall, it is important to examine the impact of an oil
price hike on the St. Anthony's College community across different year levels, as
each group may have different needs and concerns that should be considered in any
response to the issue. By taking into account the perspectives of all students, the
college can develop policies and programs that are responsive to the needs of the
entire community.
Furthermore, most of the respondents were single, thus have no other priority
other than studies. Unlike the 20% of them were got married and they have the
biggest responsibility. The status of the respondents has also great factor when it
comes to daily budgeting. Most likely, they experienced financial constraint due to oil
price hike. Specifically, parents were still the major providers of weekly allowance of
the students. The daily income of their parents also affected since the inflation rate of
13
basic goods is continuous rapidly. Moreover, the results also revealed important
needs of the respondents which they opted to cut or lessen their consumption
because of oil price hike. The second table showed that food is the main item that
respondents opted to consumed less. Other than that, beauty products and clothing
were also decrease similar to traveling expenses but not much on communication
expenses. Meanwhile, medicine, beverages, and school supplies were not decrease
because these are the most needed in their studies and well-being. These items
have various prices either increase or decrease depend upon the oil prices for
transportation of the products.
Despite of the continuous oil price hike, there were coping mechanism which
the respondents enable to apply daily. One of these was not to take snacks to save
money for other finances in school and at home. In addition, having a self-discipline
in buying important things. The students should have discipline and balance with
what are the things they need to buy. Based on the results, there is a significant
effect of oil price hike to the students. It was shown in table two the basic needs that
have less in consumption. Besides, the data indicated that the highest percentage to
lessen is the food. This is one of the current problems of the country, specifically in
the agricultural sector due to continuous oil price hike.
CONCLUSIONS
The oil price has a major impact on the economy and society, and there is
increasing recognition that the impacts of the oil price are pervasive. In this case, the
Land Transportation Franchising Regulatory Bank (LTFRCB) and government should
be able to come up with the case to case basis regarding the prompt on variables
that suggest the rise and low of gas price depending on the economic crisis. There
are different factors to consider before pursuant of the ordinance and laws regarding
fare hike. It is truly inevitable that motorcycle riders would complain but as far as the
situation dictates, commuter will surely suffer. So as to avoid this recurring common
societal issues, people must be kin and wise in shifting the alternatives they believe
are practical and useful.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Gasoline is not only important to our transportation systems, but to the
economy as a whole: the price of gasoline influences the prices of other important
commodities such as food. Rising gasoline prices frequently and uniquely result in
public outcry, demanding action by policymakers to help riders bear the burden of
high gasoline prices. One long-run solution to reduce the burden of higher gasoline
prices is to strengthen vehicle efficiency standards, thus ensuring that new vehicles
will require less gasoline to travel the same distance. One solution that can provide
relief today from the burden of higher gasoline prices, without creating inefficiencies
or market distortions, is to send fixed refunds or rebates to riders. If these refunds or
rebates are not tied to gasoline consumption, they create positive incentives to
reduce gasoline consumption while still providing riders with relief.
One long-run solution to reduce the burden of higher gasoline prices is to
strengthen vehicle efficiency standards which regulate the average efficiency of new
vehicles, thus ensuring that new vehicles will require less gasoline to travel the same
distance. Another solution to reducing the burden associated with high gasoline
14
prices is to incentivize the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). Because these
vehicles do not use gasoline, riders who drive EVs no longer have to worry about
high gasoline prices. As more vehicle owners buy EVs, the demand for gasoline
drops, and once EV adoption hits a certain level, this can also put downward
pressure on gasoline prices and reduce the burden for other riders.
