1. Give five reasons or benefits for going underground. (5 Marks)

2. In the context of planning and design of cavern facilities, discuss the following:

(a) What are the three key limitations for underground facilities and their
implications for design and operations?
(5 Marks)

(b) Name three important planning parameters and discuss their importance in
the planning and design of a cavern facility.
(10 Marks)

3. Discuss two most common techniques for site investigations for rock cavern
projects.

(a) Geological uncertainties are inherent in underground cavern projects.

Discuss three common practices for managing geological risks.
(10 Marks)

(b) Explain the rationale for risk sharing between the client and contractor in
rock cavern construction contracts.
(5 Marks)

6. (a) Briefly describe the rock mass classification Q-system. (5 Marks)

(b) Give the formula for estimating the Q-value. (5 Marks)

(c) Briefly describe each parameter in the Q-system. (5 Marks)

(d) Estimate the Q-value for the following conditions:

 Borehole logging as given in Figure Q6. Unit is cm.

joint walls; residual friction angle 25-30
 Minor water inflow, about 3 litres/min locally
 UCS = 120 MPa
 Overburden about 100 m
 An underground swimming pool in a rock cavern: span 30 m, height
