The arts lesson plan that I created, adapted, and implemented was the Music Lesson Plan.
The lesson title was Exploring Music Concepts. During this lesson I allowed the students to
choose whether they wanted to participate. After the group was created, we sat down in a circle
on the carpet. We began by singing a hello song, the song I chose was “Hello, Neighbor” by Dr.
Jean. After that, we played "pass the beat," but I changed it so that the students could select
different instruments. I began, then handed the beat to the student seated across from me. Next,
we played the game loud or soft. I gave the kids the opportunity to swap instruments before we
started this exercise. Following our loud or soft, we discussed melody and its definition. We
played with all the instruments in the circle and the students played whatever they were feeling
I would say that my lesson went as planned. The only issue I faced is that not many
students joined my group. After nap the Jets were full of energy and wanted to interact with more
stimulating activities. However, the students that joined my group were very involved and we all
had an abundance of fun. After I finished the lesson and the students were freely playing with the
instruments, more students came over and got involved. Some students started singing, others
were playing with instruments, and some where just sitting enjoying the music.
If I had to teach this lesson again, I would choose which students I wanted to participate
rather than have the students choose my group. This would allow for more students to get
involved with music in class. I would also bring the students outside; it was a beautiful day
outside and it would’ve been a very immersive experience if the students were outside playing
with the different instruments. Lastly, I would’ve written out the word melody so that the
students could see what the word looks like. When I was teaching about what melody is, I was
only saying it and I believe it would’ve been more beneficial if I had written it down.
I learned that students are interested in music. Music is not always prioritized in the
classroom, which impacts different areas of education. All the Jets love listening to music,
dancing in the classroom, and singing random tunes when their working. I think that by bringing
out the instruments and letting them play with them, it allowed them to delve further into the
topic of music. With seeing that, as I move forward in my education and eventually do become a
teacher, I will remember the importance of incorporating music into the classroom.
Some modifications that would’ve benefitted the lesson would be taking the children out
of the classroom, writing down all that we were doing, and saying the intentions of the lesson
before beginning. During centers the classroom can become very loud and hectic, I believe that
by taking my group out of the classroom to implement this lesson the experience would’ve been
better. I also think that writing down the different words that I was teaching and that we were
singing (loud, soft, pass the beat, etc.) It would’ve let the students see the words that they were
using during the experience. Lastly, I should’ve told the students everything that we were doing
before I started the lesson. Laying out my intentions as well as expectations, would let the
students know what to do and how I wanted them to behave. Overall, the lesson went very well,
the students had a great time and took a lot from this experience. I gained a lot of knowledge
from applying this experience in the Jets classroom as well. It expanded my knowledge of music
in the classroom and helped me get a better understanding of the Jets children as well.
