NANOCOMPOSITES

1
Composite

Combination of two or more different materials that are mixed in an effort

to blend the best properties of both.

Nanocomposite

Multi-phase solid materials which contain at least one phase in

nanometer range (1-100 nm)

Achievement of multi-functional properties

Optical
Magnetic 2
Thermal
Catalytic, etc.
General characteristics of a nanocomposite

A nanocomposite consists of one or more discontinuous phases

distributed in a continuous phase.

Continuous Phase – Matrix

Discontinuous phase – Reinforcement / Reinforcing material

Posses potential applications in

targeting drug delivery,
high density magnetic recording,
separation techniques,
catalysis,
environmental remediation, etc. 3
Classification of Nanocomposites

Polymer-Inorganic Nanocomposites

e.g. Ag-poly(vinyl alcohol), CdS-Poly(styrene)

Metal-Ceramic matrix Nanocomposites

e.g. Ni-Al2O3, TiC-Ni

Metal oxide based multi-functional Nanocomposites

e.g. Au-TiO2, Ag-Fe2O3, Au-ZnO, ZnO-SiO2, NiO-ZnO

Alloy based Nanocomposites

e.g. FeNi-Al2O3, PtAu-MnO2

4
Polymer Nanocomposites

▪Increase in the electrical break down strength of polymers

▪Improved thermal, chemical and mechanical stability of inorganic nanoparticles.

5
CdS-poly(styrene)
Ag-poly(vinyl alcohol)
Metal-Ceramic Nanocomposites
Metal nanoparticles such as aluminium, chromium, magnesium,
molybdenum, nickel, tungsten, etc are dispersed in a ceramic matrix,
e.g. Al2O3, AlN, SiC, TiC, and Si3N4

•Increased thermal shock resistance

•Strong fracture toughness

Ni-Al2O3 TiC-Ni
Metal oxide based multi-functional Nanocomposites

Multi-functional properties -
e.g. silver nanoparticles show good optical properties and antibacterial
activity while iron oxide nanoparticles exhibit interesting magnetic
properties like superparamagnetism. By combining these two
nanoparticles in a nanocomposite, the materials can show interesting
bi-functional properties like magneto-optical behavior.

11
Core-Shell Nanoparticles –
A special class of Nanocomposites

12
The core-shell nanoparticles contain a core material
(inner) and one or more shell materials (outer) and
either the core or the shell possesses nano dimensions

degradation of organic pollutants
14
Importance of Core-Shell Nanoparticles

•The core-shell nanoparticles are highly functional materials.

•Because of shell coating, the properties of core material, such as reactivity decrease,
thermal stability may increase, and thus the stability and dispersibility of
core material increases.

e.g. oxidation stability of metal core is increased.

• Surface chemistry of the core material can be modified for applications.

e.g. bio compatible layer (e.g. silica, dextran) used as shell materials for
magnetic nanoparticles for drug delivery, hyperthermia,
and MRI applications
