instrument must be sent to an authorized service center.

8.1 Clean the instrument

Clean the exterior of the instrument with a moist cloth and a mild soap solution.

8.2 Clean the colorimeter

8.2.1 Prepare the colorimeter for cleaning

WARNING
Chemical exposure hazard. Obey laboratory safety procedures and wear all of the
personal protective equipment appropriate to the chemicals that are handled. Refer to the
current material safety data sheets (MSDS) for safety protocols.

The colorimeter measurement cell may collect sediment or develop a film growth on the
inside walls.
Recommended cleaning frequency:
• Two months
Note: The condition of the sample water may make it necessary to clean the cell more often.
Tools needed:
• Cleaning kit, 9401300
The steps that follow are done at the instrument. For hazardous locations, the
manufacturer recommends the use of remote commands through the ballast water control
system.

1. Use the supplied tool to open the upper enclosure.

2. Go to INSTRUMENT SETUP>MAINTENANCE>COLORIMETER CLEANING.
3. If needed, push ENTER to put the instrument into standby mode.
4. Refer to the steps in Flush the colorimeter with cleaning solution on page 25.

While the instrument is in standby mode, do the steps that follow to clean the colorimeter.

1. Use a tool to open the lower enclosure.

2. Remove the colorimeter plug.
3. Use the dropper from the cleaning solution to put the entire contents of the dropper
bottle into the colorimeter.
4. Wait three minutes. Use a cotton swap to clean the inside walls of the colorimeter.
5. Wait three minutes. Install the colorimeter plug.

25
Maintenance

8.2.3 Put the instrument back in service

1. Push ENTER when the colorimeter clean is complete.
2. Push ENTER again to put the instrument into run mode. The cleaning solution is
flushed automatically when the instrument is put into run mode.

8.3 Replace the reagents

WARNING
Chemical exposure hazard. Obey laboratory safety procedures and wear all of the
personal protective equipment appropriate to the chemicals that are handled. Refer to the
current material safety data sheets (MSDS) for safety protocols.

One 236-mL bottle of each buffer and indicator solution can be used for about 240 hours
of operation, or 60 calendar days.
The steps that follow are done at the instrument. For hazardous locations, the
manufacturer recommends the use of remote commands through the ballast water control
system. The manufacturer recommends to clean the colorimeter when the reagents are
replaced. Refer to Clean the colorimeter on page 25.

1. Use the supplied tool to open the upper enclosure.

2. Go to INSTRUMENT SETUP>MAINTENANCE>REAGENT REPLACEMENT.

Note: The small inner tube should extend below the bottom of the larger outer tube.
7. On the instrument, push ENTER to reset the reagent bottle information.
8. Push ENTER again to put the instrument into run mode.
9. Close both enclosure doors after the bottles are installed.

26
Maintenance

Figure 8 Replace the reagent

8.4 Purge air from the reagent tubes

If the instrument is operated with an empty reagent bottle, air can get into the reagent
tube. After a new bottle of reagent is installed, the air must be purged from the tubes.
The steps that follow are done at the instrument. For hazardous locations, the
manufacturer recommends the use of remote commands through the ballast water control
system.

1. Use the supplied tool to open the upper enclosure.

2. Go to INSTRUMENT SETUP>MAINTENANCE>PURGE REAGENT LINES.
3. Push ENTER to put the instrument in standby and start the purge.
4. Push ENTER again to process the purge. The count value screen will show.
Note: The count value controls the number of purge pulses. The default value is set to one
when this screen shows. The manufacturer recommends five purge counts.
5. If necessary, change the count value. The manufacturer recommends five purge
counts. Push ENTER.
6. The pump will operate for the count value entered. Watch to make sure that reagent
is pulled through both lines to the pump manifold.
7. If needed, repeat the purge and increase the counts as needed.
8. When the purge operation is complete, push ENTER to put the instrument in run
mode.

27
Maintenance

8.5 Prime the instrument manually

In typical use, the instrument will prime automatically after the air purge. If air remains in
the reagent line after the purge, do the steps in this procedure.

1. Use the supplied tool to open the upper enclosure.

2. Go to INSTRUMENT SETUP>MAINTENANCE>PURGE REAGENT LINES.
3. Push ENTER to put the instrument in standby.
4. Make sure that both reagent tubes go to the bottom of the reagent bottles.
5. Disconnect the reagent delivery tube from the front of the colorimeter. Refer to
Figure 1 on page 7.
6. Connect the supplied primer syringe to the disconnected end of the reagent delivery
tube.
7. Set the instrument to purge the reagent lines with five cycles.
8. Start the purge cycle. While the pump operates, gently pull the plunger of the syringe
to pull the reagent through the pump. Solution should run through both tubes and into
the syringe.
9. When the purge cycle stops, remove the syringe from the end of the reagent delivery
tube.
10. Connect the reagent delivery tube to the colorimeter.
11. Dispose of the reagent in the syringe. Refer to the MSDS and local regulations for
disposal information.
Note: Do not add the reagent in the syringe back to either reagent bottle.
12. When the purge operation is complete, push ENTER to put the instrument in run
mode.

8.6 Take the instrument out of service

The steps that follow are done at the instrument. For hazardous locations, the
manufacturer recommends the use of remote commands through the ballast water control
system.

1. Go to INSTRUMENT SETUP>MAINTENANCE>RUN/STANDBY MODE.

9.2 Error list

When an error message shows, a condition is present that makes it necessary to stop
instrument operation. Refer to Table 4.

top of colorimeter. Restart the
instrument.

9.3 Examine the 4-20 mA loop

Use this procedure when the 4–20 mA current loop does not work as expected. The
manufacturer strongly recommends the use of a 4–20 mA loop isolator with galvanic
isolation to prevent ground loop issues with this instrument.

1. Disconnect the wire from the negative (–) loop terminal and from the positive (+) loop
terminal.
2. Use a hand-held multimeter to measure the current between the positive (+) loop
terminal and the negative (-) loop terminal..

29
Troubleshooting

If the expected current shows on the multimeter during the test but not on the
controller or logger during normal operation conditions, a ground loop condition may
exist.
3. Look for a shared connection to the power supply common terminal or to ground.
Rewire as needed, or use a loop isolator.
