12 – Exercise: Internal Combustion Engines

‣ Task 12: Consider an Otto cycle that has a compression ratio of six, a compression efficiency of 85%, and an
expansion efficiency of 90%. At the beginning of the compression process, air is at 101.3 kPa and 25°C, and
the maximum temperature and pressure that occur during the cycle are 𝑇𝑚𝑎𝑥 = 1300 𝐾 and 𝑃𝑚𝑎𝑥 = 4 𝑀𝑃𝑎.
Accounting for the variation of specific heats of air with temperature, assuming 𝑇𝑠 = 2000 𝐾 and 𝑇0 = 293 𝐾.
Use the attached T-s-diagram for air.

a) Sketch the process!

b) Find the net work and the heat transferred to the air during the heat addition process.
c) Find the energy efficiencies
d) Sketch the process in the T-s-diagram

‣ Task 13: A Diesel cycle has a compression ratio of 16 and a cutoff ratio of 2. At the beginning of the compression
process, the working fluid is at 100 kPa, 27°C, and 2 l. Consider a compression efficiency of 80% and an
expansion efficiency of 85%; 𝑇𝑠 = 2000 𝐾 and 𝑇0 = 300 𝐾. Treat the working gas as air.
Use the attached T-s-diagram for air.

a) Sketch the process!

b) Calculate the temperature and pressure of air for each process
c) Find the net work output
d) Find the energy efficiencies
