Central Sterilization Department

S. No. Yes No
1 The CSD department provides disinfection and sterilization of items for
the hospital.
2 The traffic flow of the entire department should proceed from dirty to
clean with two distinct areas and entrance/exits.
3 Separate hand washing facilities must be provided. One in dirty area and
another in the clean areas at minimum.
4 Decontamination area in CSD needs negative air flow to keep
contaminants in the room whereas the clean work room areas would be
expected to have a positive airflow to blow possible contaminants and
keep them from entering the room.
5 All areas (decontamination, clean processing and sterilizer equipment
rooms) should have direct exhausting of all air to the outdoors.
6 Sterile storage areas should have positive pressure ventilation and should
be exclusively for sterile packs.
7 Storage areas must be adjacent to the processing areas with shelf storage
to maintain sterilized items off the floor and have appropriate air
circulation.
8 Distribution carts are expected to be closed containers that are clean and
kept outside but near the storage area for transporting items back to their
respective units or the operating rooms.
9 Personnel who are working in the decontamination areas have barrier
protection equipment. This would include rubber gloves, waterproof
aprons, supply of face masks that have shields and safety goggles.
10 Disposable gloves should be used in all contact with soiled or used items.
11 Staff should wash their hands and ideally put on a clean cover gown prior
to entering the clean areas.
12 It is suggested that linen inspection and packing be performed before or
after the processing of solid instruments in order to decrease the
incidence of lint or fiber contamination.
13 A tracking system is needed to identify each item sterilized. It should
indicate which sterilizer was used for that particular item, the date it was
sterilized and in which load.
14 All sterilized items are expected to have an expiry date clearly written on
the wrapper ideally.
15 Specialized equipment for cleaning, disinfection, drying, packaging and
sterilization is available for Ultrasound Machine, Pressure water jet at
decontamination sink, Air Pressure gun for drying, Instrument washing
machine and approved autoclave packing paper/material.
16 Bowie- Dick testing is performed daily on high-speed pre-vacuum
sterilizers.
17 Spore test are performed weekly.
18 Spore testing is done when the sterilizer was installed after each major
repair.
19 Biological indicators are present in each load containing implants.
20 Chemical indicators are placed inside each item or pack to be sterilized.
21 A log is provided for each sterilizer within the department. Contents of the
log should include but not limited to Each Sterilizer has a unique code,
Results of daily function tests, Results of Spore test, Contents of each load,
Any graph or machine generated printout that records exposure time and
temperatures, Name of operator performing each load, All preventive
maintenance provided Log records to be held for a one year period for
each sterilizer.
22 Each item or pack to be sterilized is labeled with Lot number which
identifies the sterilizer, Date of Sterilization, Sterilization Cycle number,
Initials of person who assembled the pack, expiry date
