Modern freestyle dancing can be traced back to the freestyle music of the 1970s and later. This kind of dance does
not rely on choreography or scripting. Additionally, different people can physically interpret music in very different
ways based on their mood, experiences, preferences and body characteristics. Godmother of freestyle Anna Jones
developed the dance form in the early 80s from the ashes of disco, which is why it's often known as "disco dancing"
This dance style is said to have started in the Black American community in the heart of the Bronx in New
York City. It features complex acrobatic movements that are mostly done close to the ground. Some dancers can
express themselves through styles that require one to stand up for most of the moves.
LYRICAL STYLE
Lyrical dance technique can trace its roots back to Russia in the first half of the 20th century. The Russian method
used focuses on back strength and the fluidity of the arms. Lyrical and contemporary also really test the abilities of
bodies to create many impactful emotions through sharp movements. This approach to dance helped shape lyrical
dance in later decades into what it is today.
Lyrical dance started turning into a new dance form in the 1970’s as a form of Jazz that told a story or classic
ballet, lyrical later described the movements that went directly with the song that was played, kind of like improve.
Lyrical dance did not gained popularity until the 1990s. Dance teachers struggled with whether to include the new
style, alongside jazz, and ballet.
Lyrical dance is a dance style that embodies various aspects of ballet, jazz, acrobatics, and modern dance. The
style combines ballet technique with the freedom and musicality of jazz and contemporary. According to Jennifer
Fisher, lyrical dance is “strongly associated with clearly displayed emotional moods, fast-moving choreographic
strategies, emphasis on virtuosic display, illustration of song lyrics, and, in group form, exact unison.” The style is
usually danced at a faster pace than ballet but not as fast as jazz. Lyrical dance is a category typically found in dance
competitions.
HIP-HOP STYLE
Hip-hop dance began during the late 1960's and early 1970's, originally inspired by the movements of African
dancing, and flourished as a new style of dance performed on the street for the people. Hip-hop incorporates aspects of
modern dance, tap, and swing, integrating music and complex movements to form artistry.
The hip hop dance style originated in the Bronx, New York City during the late 1970s. The influence of the music
genre, fashion style, and dance took longer to develop compared to the rock music scene in Canada. DJ Kool
Herc (AKA the “Father of Hip Hop”) used to start block parties in the West Bronx (AKA the “birthplace of Hip Hop").
He played music on his turntables and the community would come out to mingle and dance.
FUSION STYLE
History. While some would say that our "d'ancestors" has been Fusion dancing since the dawn of time, the Fusion
dance community emerged sometime in the 2000s in the United States and later spread to Canada, Europe, and other
regions (although some think it might have started as early as the 1990s).
Fusion dancing is a form of improvised partner dancing that occurs when dancers “fuse” or combine elements
from two or more dance styles, or use elements of a dance style with music that is not typically associated with that
dance style.
The term fusion dance is usually understood as a process of 'blending' dances from two or more different
cultures, genres or styles. Fusing dances from different cultural legacies could have two distinct outcomes. The first
patent related to a fusion reactor was registered in 1946 by the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority. The
inventors were Sir George Paget Thomson and Moses Blackman.
