Friday Khutbah 050717
The mu’azzin (caller to prayer) stands up and gives the azaan (call) to pronounce the beginning of the khutba.
(Note: The first azaan has already been given. This second Azhan is the real Azhan that is obligatory. Abubakar
said the first is for the lazy)
The Khateeb stands up again and begins with the Muqaddimah below: This bit is always done in Arabic.

Verily, the most truthful speech is the Book of Allah, the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad,
and the worst affairs are newly invented matters. Every newly invented matter is a religious innovation,
and every religious innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is destined for the Hellfire.
However, those Muslims who know their Diini know that in Islam, things happen according to specific
injunctions and guidance. The Juma prayer is prescribed upon every adult Male Muslim in Quran, and the
guidance on how it is done is provided is provided in Sunnah.
The Friday prayer is one of the outstanding symbols of Islam that distinguish it from other religions.
Allah has blessed the Muslims by granting us this day as a day of congregational worship. It is the
only day of the week mentioned in the Quran.
Allah has prescribed the Friday prayer on the residents of all localities, so that they can collectively
remember Allah and earn His generous rewards and mercy through obeying Him. They gather to
listen to advice, enjoin each other in righteousness, and to forbid each other acts of evil. By
gathering repeatedly, they get to know each other and cooperate in helping the weak, encouraging
the lazy and making heedless aware. And together, they seek a certain hour in the day of Jumah
during which Allah does not reject the supplication to Him. By so doing, they demonstrate to
disbelievers the strength of the Faithful and their enormous multitudes; so that the disbelievers feel
weak while the believers are overpowered.
The wording of the verse that prescribes the Juma prayer is in the imperative, and this means it is an
obligation. Allah says in Surat Jumu’a, 62nd chapter of Quran, verse 9, Bada Bismillah Rahman Rahim:
اْلُج ُمَعِة َفاْس َع ْو ا َيا َأُّيَها اَّلِذ يَن آَم ُنوا ِإَذ ا ُنوِدَي ِللَّص اَل ِة ِم ن َيْو ِم
ِإن ُك نُتْم َتْع َلُم وَن ِإَلٰى ِذ ْك ِر ِهَّللا َو َذ ُروا اْلَبْيَع ۚ َٰذ ِلُك ْم َخ ْيٌر َّلُك ْم
Allah says: “O believers when the call is proclaimed for the prayer on Friday, come to the remembrance of
Allah and leave off business; that is better for you if you but know.” (Surat Al-Jumu’a 62:9)
Salah al Jumuah is an individual obligation [Farda ayan]; and its rewards are so great that no Muslim
should ever consider missing it, unless he has an emergency.
The Messenger of Allah (sallahu alayhi wa sallam) took special care in preserving it, reminding
Muslims often of its significance and warning against taking its obligation lightly. Imam Ahmad,
Muslim and at Tirmidhi narrated that the Messenger of Allah (sallahu alyhi wa sallam) said “Friday
is the best day the sun has risen on. In it Allah has created Adam, admitted him into Paradise and
drove him out of it.”
The people of Islam gather weekly, on every Friday in the major places of worship.
It was during Friday when Allah finished the creation, the sixth day, during which Allah
created the heavens and earth.
During Friday, Allah created Adam, and he was placed in Paradise, and ironically, it was a
Friday when he was taken out of Paradise.
There is an hour during Friday, wherein no faithful servant asks Allah for something good,
but Allah will give him what he asked for.
All of this is based upon Hadiths in the authenic collections. In the ancient language Friday was
called, `Arubah. It is a fact that previous nations were informed about Friday, but they were led
astray from it.
The Jews chose Saturday for their holy day, but Adam was not created on Saturday.
The Christians chose Sunday, which is the day the creation was initiated.
Allah chose Friday for this Ummah, because it is the day the creation was finished.
Al-Bukhari and Muslim recorded that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah said,

"We are the last (to come) but the first on the Day of Resurrection, though the former nations
were given the Scriptures before us.
And this was their day (Friday) the celebration of which was made compulsory for them, but
they differed about it.
So, Allah gave us guidance to it, and all other people are coming after us: the Jews tomorrow
and the Christians the day after tomorrow.''

Allah diverted those who were before us from Friday.
For the Jews there was Saturday, and for the Christians there was Sunday.
He made them; Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and it is in this order they will come after us on
the Day of Resurrection.
We are the last of among the people of this world and the first among the created to be judged
on the Day of Resurrection.
Necessity of the Remembrance of Allah on Friday, by attending the Khutbah and the Prayer
O you who believe! When the call is proclaimed for the Salah on Al-Jumu`ah (Friday), then
hasten (Fas`aw) to the remembrance of Allah
The meaning of Sa`y (hasten) here does not refer to walking quickly.
`Umar bin Al-Khattab and Ibn Mas`ud - may Allah be pleased with them - recited it;
Then proceed to the remembrance of Allah.'')
As for walking in haste to the prayer, that was indeed prohibited, since it was recorded in the Two
Sahihs from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet said,
When you hear the Iqamah, proceed to offer the prayer with calmness and solemnity and do not
rush. And pray whatever you catch, and complete whatever you have missed.
It is recommended for those coming to the Friday prayer to perform Ghusl (taking bath) before they
come.
It is collected in the Two Sahihs that `Abdullah bin `Umar said that Allah's Messenger said,
The Two Sahihs recorded that Abu Sa`id said that the Messenger of Allah said,
It is Allah's right on every Muslim to bathe during every seven days, by washing his head and
body.
Muslim collected this Hadith. Jabir narrated that Allah's Messenger said,
Within every seven days, every Muslim man has the obligation to perform Ghusl at least one
day, the day of Jumu`ah.
Also on Friday “There is an hour during which Allah accepts the invocation of those who invoke
him.” Sahih al Bukhari, chapter on Jumah and Sahih Muslim , Hadith no 825.
Yaumul Jum’ah has many other virtues. Imam Ahmad and AT Tirmidhi narrated that Abdullah bin
Amr (radi allahi anhu) said the Prophet (sallah alayhi wa sallam) said: “Allah saves ever Muslim
who dies on Friday or during its night from the Fitnah trial of the grave.”
There is a great deal of reward in attending Salah al Jumuah in the proper manner. Abu Hurayrah
narrated that the prophet (sallahu alayhe wa sallam) said, “Whoever makes ablution properly, then
goes to the Masjid and listens and remain quiet, he will be forgiven whatever he did [of minor sins]
from that Friday to the previous Friday, plus an additional three days.”[Recorded by Muslim.]
"Whoever ghassala (washes his head, and it is said: has intercourse with his wife so that it be a
means to lower the gaze from the haram that day) on the day of Jumuah, then comes in the earliest
time and before the first khutbah, walks and doesn't ride, stays near the Imam, listens and does not
speak - for each step [he makes] he has actions of one year, the reward of fasting and standing in
prayer in it." [Ahl as-Sunan]
The Prophet (sallahu alayhe wa sallam) has sternly warned those who miss Salah al Jumuah with
no valid reason; he said: “The people must cease from not performing salat al jumuah or Allah will
put a seal over their hearts and they will become from the heedless.” Recorded by Muslim.
Salah al Jumuah is obligatory upon every free, sane, adult, non-Traveling Muslim male. It is not
obligatory upon women. Also, people who are traveling are not required to attend salah al Jumah.
The Prophet sallah alayhe wa sallam said, “There is no Salatul Jumah upon the traveler.” Recorded
by al-Tabrani, al Darauni, and Abdul Razzaq.
The answer is YES. The scholars are agreed that Jumu’ah prayer is not obligatory for women, and
that they may pray four rak’ahs of Zuhr in their homes; but they are free to come to the mosque nd
pray behind the Imaam.
Taariq ibn Shihaab (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings
of Allaah be upon him) said: “Jumu’ah is a duty that is required of every Muslim in congregation,
except four: a slave, a woman, a child or one who is sick.” Narrated by Abu Dawood 91067).
“Abantu bana tebassibwako musango gwa butasaala Juma: Omuddu, omwana omuto, omukyala,
n’omulwadde.” Oyo yenna alina ensonga emusonyiyisa Juma, asaale Zhuhur raaka nnya.
If a woman adheres to the shar’i conditions for her going out to the mosque, such as not wearing
adornments and perfume, then there is nothing wrong with her attending Jumu’ah prayers in the
mosque and praying two rak’ahs behind the imam, in which case she does not need to pray Zuhr.
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Do not prevent your women from
going to the mosques, although their houses are better for them.” Narrated by Abu Dawood (567);
classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood.
The woman who chooses to go to Jumu’ah has to avoid perfume and adornments, and must observe
Islamic moral etiquette.
The time of Salah al Jumuah is the time for Dhur or noon prayer. Anas narrated that the Messenger
of Allah salllahu alahe wa sallam would perform Salah al Jumuah when the sun turns.” (Recorded by
al Bukhari and others.) In times of hostile weather, it is permissible to perform the prayer earlier.
“Abdullah ibn Salama who said, “The messenger of Allah led us in salat al Jumuah during the time
of Dhuha which is before noon and then he said, ‘I was afraid for you because of the heat.”
Recorded by ibn Abi Shybah. The time of Salat al Jumuah continues until the time of Asr Prayer.
There are many opinions on this point, but the one with the strongest evidence is that three people
[one of them being the Imam] are sufficient for Salat al Jumuah to become obligatory upon them, if
they meet the other conditions.
The person intending to perform Sala al Jumuah should perform ghusl [full the bath or
shower]. The majority of the scholars agree that Salaat Jumu’a remains valid, but less
weighty when one does not perform ghusl. The ghusl is performed starting from the time of
Fajr prayer. Also, if a person performs ghusl and the later invalidates his ablution, he need
not repeat the ghusl. Making ablution suffices. Furthermore, one ghusl may be used for
removing sexual impurity [janabah] and for Salah al Jumuah.
Imam Ahmad, al Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud and An Nasai narrated that Abu Sa’id al
Khudri radi allah anhu said the Messenger of Allah salla alyhi wa sallam said: “ Ghusl on
Friday is compulsory for every Muslim who reach the age of puberty, and using Siwak and
wearing perfume as much as his is able, even from his family’s perfume.”
2. Dressing well for Salat al Jumuah: This is a special time that requires Muslims to appear in
the best manners possible. One should therefore, put on his best attire for Salah al Jumah.
The Prophet sallahu alayhi wa sallam said, “ If one has the means, he should by two pieces of
clothing, other that his work clothes or everyday clothing, to wear on Friday.” Recorded by
Abu Dawud.
3. Going early to the Masjid: There is a great reward in going early to Salat al Jumuah,
beginning after sunrise. By leaving for Salah al Jumah, one gets the reward of waiting for the
Prayer, making dhiker [remembering Allah] and voluntary prayers during that time.
Sayidinah Abubakr was asked why he goes to the mosque before Azhan, and he replied:
“Azhan is a reminder for the lazy, and I am not lazy with Ibaadah of Salaah.”
*** Saidinah Uthman saw that people were sometimes late, so he would take the Azhan to
them in the market. He would call the first Azhan, the second one, the Iqaamah, read the
Khutbah, and also lead the prayer. That is how he started the first Azhan. The Prophet and
the first two Caliphs left only the Azhan at the very time of prayer.
Walking to the Masjid whenever feasible as there is a reward for every step taken to the
Masjid.
The Messenger sallahu wa alayhi wa sallam said: “The example of the one who enters the
Masjid in the earliest hour is that of one offering a camel in sacrifice. The one coming next is
like the one offering a cow and then a ram and then a chicken and then an egg respectively.
Reported by Ahmad and al Bukhari, Muslim , An Nasai and ibn Majah.
Abu Umamah narrated that the Messenger of Allah said, “The angels sit at the doors to the
Masjid and with them are the scrolls in which they record the people who come. When the
Imam appears, the scrolls are rolled up.”
If a person comes late to the Friday Prayer while the Imam is delivering the Khutbah, should
he pray the two rakahs of Tahiyyat al Masjid [prayers of greeting the masjid] and then sit or
should he simply skip them? The strongest opinion is to perform the tahiyyah al masjid based
on the hadith of the Prophet sallah alayh wa sallam: “if one of you comes to the Masjid, he
should pray two rakahs before hi sits” Related by al Bukhari and Muslim.
Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah radi allahu anhuma: A person entered the masjid while the
Prophet sallahu alyhi wa sallam was delivering the Khutbah [religious talk] on a Friday. The
Prophet sallahu alyhi wa sallam said to him, “Have you offered the Salat?” Then man replied
in the negative. The Prophet sallahu alyhi wa sallam said “get up and pray two
Rakats.” Recorded by al Bukhari, in chapter Salat ul Jumuah.
However, Tahiyyat al Masjid is not required of the person giving the Khutbah. Also, this
requirement is limited only to prayers offered in a Masjid. [If Salahu Jumah is in a hall or
anywhere other than a Masjid, then there is no Tahiyyat al Masjid. The two rakat are for
“greeting” the Masjid.]
Not clasping one’s hands in intertwines one’s fingers while waiting for the prayer.
Sitting in al Ihtiba position during the Jumuah is disliked. This is sitting on the hind end with
the knees bent and held together at the stomach by one’s hands or whatever he is wearing.
This position might lead to one falling asleep while the Imam is giving the Khutbah.
Sitting in the front rows and close to the Imam whenever possible.
It is recommended for those who feel sleepy to change places in the Masjid.
Remaining quiet while the Imam is delivering the Khutbah. This actually includes listening
to the Imam and not playing with anything while the Imam is speaking.
Reciting surah al Kahf as an authentic Hadith states: “For whoever recites surah al Kahf on
Friday, it will be a light for him from that Friday to the next.” Recorded by al Bayhaqi and al
Hakim. The surah could be read any time of the day.
Reciting the Quran, Dhikr [remembering Allah], Dua [supplication] and invoking Allah to
bestow His mercy and blessings on the Messenger (sallah alyhi wa sallam) as taught in the
Sunnah.
It is recommended for those who attend the Jumuah to pray as much as they can before the
Khutbah, until the Imam mounts the Minbar.
Actions to Avoid
1. Every Muslim must be extra vigilant in guarding against sin on the day of Friday.
2. The Muslim is not allowed to busy himself with anything other than heading towards the
Masjid to attend prayer. Selling and buying after the Adhan is prohibited.
During the Khutbah, it is forbidden to interact in any way. One should keep quiet and listen
while the Imam is delivering the Khutab on Friday.
4. It is forbidden to pray behind known heretics with heresies that take them out the fold of
Islam.
5. It is forbidden to passing around donation boxes during the Khutbah. The etiquette of
Salat al Jumuah is to listen to the Khutbah and be quiet and do not be disturbed with other
things. These other disturbances include performing dhikr with beads, texting on the cell
phone and playing with one’s clothing or hands etc.
Narrated by Abu Hurairah reported Allah’s Messenger sallahu alyhhi wa sallam said” He
who performed ablution well, then came to Friday Prayer, listened [to the sermon], kept
silence all [his sins] between that time and the next Friday would be forgiven with three days
extra, and he who touches pebbles caused an interruption.” Recorded by Muslim.
6. It is forbidden to leave the Masjid before the Salat al Jumuah has ended, unless one has
an emergency. Jabir bin Abdillah reported that Allah’s Messenger sallahu alyhi wa
sallam was delivering the sermon on Friday when a caravan from Syria arrived. The
majority of the people who were attending the Jumuah prayer got up and left the Masjid,
and only twelve people were left listening to the Prophet sallahu alyhi wa sallam. Allah
revealed the following verse to blame them for this act:
But when they saw a transaction or a diversion, [O Muhammad], they rushed to it
and left you standing. Say, "What is with Allah is better than diversion and than a
transaction, and Allah is the best of providers."(Surat Jumuah 62:11)
This verse comes after verse 62:9 in which he had told us to leave everything when the time for
Jumuah arrives.
And when the prayer has been concluded, disperse within the land and seek from
the bounty of Allah , and remember Allah often that you may succeed. (Surat Jumuah
62:10)
Islam does not forbid the lawful search for rizik after you have fulfilled your obligations to Allah.
After Swalah is completed, Allah tells us, go out into the world and look for the bounties he has
made available, but continue to glorify Him if your want to be successful. Genda olamuze ente,
genda owawagule emmwanyi, genda okoole lomonde, etc. Naye, yonna gyooba ogenze, fazhikuru
llah kathiira – yitiriza okujjukira Allah.
After finishing the first Khutbah, the Khatib extolls the worshippers to ask Allah for forgiveness, and
he sits down for a brief moment.

Reminder them about the beauty of Islam, and how Allah has favoured us with Islam.
Abdullah bin ‘Amr bin Al-‘As (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah sal
Allahu alayhi wa sallam saying: “Whoever supplicates Allah to exalt my mention (i.e., send salah), Allah will
exalt his mention (i.e., send salah) ten times and remove from him ten sins and raise him ten degrees.”
