B1 PET Reading Part 3

For each question, choose the correct answer.

Teacher Jane Martin’s Favourite Hobby

I’m a history teacher at the local secondary school and I’ve been doing this job for over 30
years, so as you can expect, I’m a real expert when it comes to reading documents, checking
monuments and even marking essays! However, when I’m not in the classroom with my
students, you can find me ice skating at the ice skating rink in the city centre. I absolutely
love it - while it takes time for you to really feel at ease on the ice, I think it’s one of the most
relaxing sports there is.

There’s a disbelief that people who are interested in history or other difficult subjects don’t
have time to do exercise or even have a hobby, but that isn’t the case at all for me. I always
make sure I take out some time to spend just an hour whizzing along the ice with my friends
or even alone, practising the new tricks I’ve learnt with my trainer. It really helps to clear
my mind and refocus for the days ahead at my job.

While I’m in my late fifties now, many people think I’m twenty years
younger because of how fit and healthy I am - you could say ice skating
is what helps me to feel and look so good because of how much stamina
and agility you need to be able to do it well. However, as a child, I
actually hated sports and I cried whenever I had to play football!
I much preferred to sit indoors reading a good book or painting
beautiful pictures at my grandma’s house - I would have never
imagined I’d enjoy skating along a thin layer of ice so much.

About 10 years ago, I was watching television with my husband

and we decided to watch a reality TV show in which professional
ice skaters teach ordinary people how to skate and dance on the
ice. I was blown away by it all, so I signed up for beginner level ice
skating classes the week after, and the rest is history!

I’m currently training for my first competition next month, and

although I’m a little nervous about how it will go, I’m glad I’ve
decided to do something out of my comfort zone. And, in the end,
it’s the taking part that counts.

This resource has been made for the purpose of teaching English language learners. We know that students can be learning English in many different places, in many different ways and at age, so we try to
keep these resources as general as possible.
There are many acronyms associated with English language teaching. These include (but are not limited to) ELT, TEFL, EFL, ELL, EAL and ESOL. While the term ESL may not fully represent the linguistic
backgrounds of all students, it is the most widely recognised term for English language teaching globally. Therefore, we use the term ‘ESL’ in the names of our resources to make them easy to find but they
are suitable for any student learning to speak English.
