Character analysis

After reading my character I found that there wasn’t much personality from just the lines I said.
However after reading my scene partners monologue and lines I found there is much more to dee than
I originally thought. I quite quickly grasped that dee was a struggling character and maybe someone
who doesn’t have many friends. This could be due to her parents divorce as this situation isn’t easy
for teenagers to go through. From looking at an article from young minds I have understood and
found that a teenagers mental health have be negatively affected buy a divorce and seem to cause
some unexpected behavior like sadness, depression and often distancing themselves from others. I feel
like this links to dee as David found her in a room by herself drawing and eating jelly. This could
show that her parents divorce has left her feeling lonely and she has taken it upon herself to find her
some sort of comfort food (the jelly) as maybe she is not getting that comfort from anyone at home. I
further believe that this jelly may have brought her a feeling of happiness within the situation she is
in. in the play I imagine dee to be around 16 years old and therefore understandably gets excited but
also nervous when David speaks to her. Her emotions in this moment would be confused as I feel like
she would have been quite unpopular and didn’t expect a boy to know she existed especially after
distancing herself from everyone while she is going through this divorce period. But then when David
apologized later on text she said it was ok because it was nice to be talked to. This further proves my
point of dee not having friends as this line confirms it. Although dee might of found David approach a
bit weird I feel like she would of appreciated it as mentioned previously she doesn’t speak to anyone.
I find it interesting that she kept on talking to David because after seeing whether parents went
through I thought that would of put her off but maybe in dees universe David understood her and she
found that comforting or maybe that was the feeling she was longing for. I really wanted to show this
on stage so when aj was doing his monologue I played dee quite happy and content up until he rang
the doorbell. After this point I think dees feeling switches up as she is about to tell her boyfriend she
is moving to Spain and is going to brake up with him. Leading up to this moment I feel like dee would
be extremely nervous and worried (almost on the edge of tears). This break up is really hard for dee as
she finally found someone who makes her happy. I feel like dee knew this was going to happen for a
long time but kept it all in and was almost in denial and convinced herself this wasn’t going to
happen. I also believe there is ore to explore about dees parents. For example the fact she is moving so
far away and quite quickly as well could suggest that it was her mum to blame. In another universe I
believe that her mum cheated on her dad and as a result they are getting a divorce and because he dad
is the one to be moving this makes it more likely that it’s the mums fault. This is shown in the line
“I’m moving to Spain” and “tomorrow morning” . to sum up this overview of dee I believe she is a
troubled character who has found the person who makes her happy but then has to leave this person
de to situation at home.
