A Memorable Event
I was sitting on the window frame, I could see endless rain pouring down and splashing into the
large puddles that now filled the road outside my home. The sky pulls the sun upward from the
ocean and splashes brown, red, and yellow into the world outside my window. A million leaves
from different branches dip in the wind, fluttering with the false promise of flight. I shivered
slightly and turned back to head down stairs. The morning was coming and so was the most
awaited day of my life, July the 2nd, the announcement of my entrance test result. Six months
have passed since I finished my High School, I still remember the last day, we were given a
farewell party and everyone was so happy and even sad. Sad because high-school life and all
those memorable moments finally came to an end. Happy because a great future was waiting
ahead of us. As I reached the end of the stairs, all these thoughts that were going through my
mind was interrupted by a voice.
"You’re up early? Breakfast is ready" said my mom.
"I'll be there in a moment; my reply was almost inaudible.
As soon as I went downstairs I changed my clothes and went to the table, I was somewhat
uneasy and restless. My mom noticed and she said,
"Don't worry I know you won't disappoint us"
"Yeah I won't" I said with a smile on my face.
Easier said than done I always know my mother wanted me to be in a good university she wanted
me to be a hardworking person throughout my entire life. As soon as I was done with breakfast, I
laid in bed like for an hour but I couldn't sleep, my mind was swinging between hope and fear. It
was a strange stage of anxiety and expectation. Though I did well in school and I knew
everything would be fine because I had worked really hard. I couldn’t help myself but think
about the worst possible outcome.
I got up at eleven O'clock and prayed to God for success. The newspaper-boy had not yet come.
The sand of time was running out. I was getting more and more restless. After waiting to what
felt like hours, the newspaper-boy came shouting.
“I bought a mail from Ms. Liandra Ramnarine!”
My hands were shaking and heart throbbing. I ran grabbed the mail and rushed back into the
house. With trembling hands, I stared at the letter. Despite, the unexplainable feeling in my
stomach, I opened the letter within a minute, I found out my Candidate No. among the Top 50. I
couldn't believe, it until my family started to shout with excitement and joy. I was among the
Top 50 students from all over country who had taken the Entrance Test. It took me a minute to
process the information but once I did it was all tears and a fumble of words. I thanked the
Almighty for the success which he granted me. Then I ran to my best-friends and gave her the
good news. She was overwhelmed with joy.
The whole atmosphere of the house changed. Friends and relatives poured in to congratulate me.
They came with drink and bought some pencils and note pads as gifts for me. All were in jolly
and happy mood. My mother prepared a lot of different dishes for the dinner. Two of my friends
were also invited to dine. Never before I was so happy.
The following day, I went to school. I met with the Head Master and other teachers. They all
congratulated me, along with many other students from the school. We embraced each other, our
joys knew no bound. In midst of all rejoicing. I felt sorry for some of my friends who could not
do well in the entrance test. I left the college with new experience and a cheerful mind. I shall
never forget that event as long as I live.
