a. Having 2 valence electrons c. Having 8 valence electrons
b. Having 4 valence electrons d. having 6 valence electrons
5. Which of the following belongs to non-metal elements?
a. Sodium b. gallium c. Oxygen d. lead
II-IDENTIFICATION: Read each item carefully. Write the correct word(s) that is being described of the following statements.
6. It is the tendency of an atom to attract electrons.
7. These are electrons located in the outermost energy level of an atom.
8. It is a rule that tells that elements gain or lose or share electrons to achieve 8 valence electrons.
9. It occurs when metal atom transfer its valence electron to a non-metal atom.
10. A volcano that erupted in 1992 after 600 years of inactivity.
11. These are volcanoes that have no record of eruption.
12. It tells the percentage of the mass made up by each element in a compound.
13. It is the mass of one mole of a substance expressed in grams.
14. A characteristic of metals that reflects light giving metals a shiny appearance.
15. It is composed of the symbol of the element and dots which represent the number of valence electrons.
III-ENUMERATION: Enumerate or give what are asked in each item.
16-17. Classifications of Volcanoes 18-20. Active Volcanoes in the Philippines
IV-TRUE or FALSE: Read each statement carefully. Write the word TRUE if the statement is true and the word FALSE if the
statement is false.
21. Volcanic eruptions cause cooling of earth’s surface.
22. Power plants are built in an area where it is particularly hot just below the surface near in volcanic activity.
23. Volcanoes erupt differently.
24. The atomic number of an element represents the number of valence electrons of an atom.
25. Atoms in family IA have the same Lewis symbol.
26. When sodium bonds with fluorine, it will form ionic bond.
27. Thermal and electrical conductivity in metals are due to the free flow of electrons in the solid phase.
28. Different kinds of materials with the same number of pieces have different masses.
29. Mole concept is important because it gives a convenient way to express the type of bond formation.
30. If a company wants to produce resins, it will be able to do it without knowing the correct percentage of every
component needed to form resins.
V-READING COMPREHENSION:31-40.Read the paragraph carefully. Fill up the table below with the needed data.
HOW DO VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS AFFECT SOCIETY
Volcanic eruption is often associated with negative effects. It can cause loss of lives and properties. As the lava
flows or pyroclastic materials are ejected in the air, they can destroy anything in their way. Actually, it has a good and a
bad side. For example, the eruption of Pinatubo in 1991, one of the longest volcanic eruptions, has caused the decrease in
the earth’s surface temperature for almost two years. The strong winds during its erption spread the aerosol particles
from the plume around the globe. The result was a measurable cooling of the earth’s surface for a period of almost two
years. The eruption of Pinatubo has created spectacular scenery in its wake. Likewise, the eruption of Musuan in Bukidnon
has produced very rich soils for farming years after its eruption in 1867. People became creative also by making
earthenware out of the ashfall from the volcano eruption.
POSITIVE EFFECTS NEGATIVE EFFECTS
VI-PROBLEM SOLVING: Read and solve the following problems carefully. Show your complete solution.
A.Compute for the molar mass of the following substances:
41. salt (NaCl) 42. Water (H2O)
B. Compute for the mass, number of particles and percent composition of the following:
43-45. Calculate the mass of 0.500 moles of CO2.
46-48. Convert 28.6 g of CO2 into moles.
49-50. The presence of SO2 in the atmosphere causes acid rain. How many percent of sulphur is present in SO 2?
51-54. Ammonium phosphate, (NH4)3PO4 is a substance that is used as fertilizer. Determine the percent composition of
ammonium phosphate.
