Reflective Essay for EAPP [Sportsfest] Teacher: Ms. Canteros
The Sportsfest is a grand event that is held to promote and celebrate athleticism,
companionship, and camaraderie amongst the senior high school students of Sta.
Elena. This week-long event fosters and improves the sportsmanship of the players and
the audience as well, through friendly plays and humble cheers. This event also
showcases the unique talents and abilities of students in sports and athletics, allowing
them to not only put their abilities on the center stage but also allows them to freely play
to their heart’s content. The Sportsfest is also an exciting event where both the players
and the audience are thrilled and elated to see how each game will turn out, who gets to
be the victor and the losers, or how well each team will fare against one another.
Sportsfest is a fun and thrilling event for all, it consists of many fun games and sports,
along with great experiences and memories for everyone in it.
The Sportsfest was a week-long event, it was held in both the Marikina Sports
Center and the on the Grounds of Sta. Elena. On the first day, the event started off with
each team showcasing their cheers and chants, we watched as the other strands gave
off their loud chants, and when it came to our time, I spurred on and got on the top of
my lungs and shouted our chant, it was harrowing for my throat, however, it was an
experience I get to treasure. I was quite ecstatic due to the fact that my friends were
playing for the fest, I wanted to see them play and cheer for them. When I arrived at the
venue I was, to be frank, quite taken aback by the heat, I felt as if I was put in an oven
on maximum temperature, but then I realized that if I and my fellow audience were
bothered by the temperature, what more could the players down on the courts, basking
in the summer heat have felt. Originally I wanted to leave early however, I decided to
endure since the only reason I was there was because I wanted to cheer our players
along with my friends. The first day was quite dreadful, not only were we enduring the
heat, but our team was also suffering heavy losses on the field, match after match,
however, we were able to secure our place in the basketball tournament to our joy.
When we saw how several of our teams were faring, we were quite anxious but
nonetheless, we cheered on with all our might, we cheered every time our team got a
point and cheered motivation toward our team when the opponent got a point. By the
event of the first day, my throat my was beyond scratched, I felt like I was roasted on a
grill, but I had fun and I supported my dear friends who played despite heat and
pressure.
In the days after, it was still quite hot, but we still spurred on, the day went on,
and we were all at the edges of our seats during its entirety. Each game brought anxiety
to not only the players but also the audience, I, for one was on edge due to each game
being an attrition kind of play, each team was trying to keep up with each other, and
each time a team scored, the opposing would score, trying to wear each other out,
especially on the women’s volleyball. We were cheering our players, screaming at the
top of our lungs, even if we lost heavily in some games we were still proud of our
players because we, I, along with my friends, knew that each and every one of us,
players and audiences, did our part for the Sportsfest, win or lose it was still a memory
to cherish.
There are many lessons that can be learned from this event, many learnings can
be derived from this. I have learned that victory is not the final goal and defeat is not the
end, even if we lose a game, we should still continue, and even if we win, we should
keep going. Another lesson that can be gained is that humility and pride are important
and should be balanced, and upheld, despite our losses we are still proud, and even
with our victories we are still humble, no victory should reduce our humility nor should
defeat destroy our pride. These lessons can be applied to my life in many ways,
especially in my education. For the first learning, in times that I get high remarks, I must
strive to either maintain or exceed that, and if I get low remarks I must strive as well to
improve and not wallow on that loss. For the second lesson, I can use that in my way of
conducting myself, that I should keep my head up high but my feet still stuck to the
ground.
