MATH 2ND QUARTER REVIEWER

Answer: The x-intercept of the equation is -6 and
LINEAR EQUATIONS
it’s y-intercept is 12.
 Has 2 points that form a line
 Highest power/exponent is 1.
 The equation of a line 2. Find the x and y-intercept of the equation, 2x-y-

2. Solve for x.
How to get the x-intercept from an equation?
2x=2
Steps:
[2x = 2](2)
1. Write the equation
2. Make y=zero (0) x=1
3. Compute for the value of x

Solve for the y-intercept.

How to get the y-intercept from an equation?
Steps: A. Rewrite the equation and change the value
Steps: of x into zero.
1. Write the equation 2(0)-y-2=0
2. Make x= zero (0)
3. Compute for the value of y -y-2=0

Examples: B. Solve for the value of y.

1. Find the x and y-intercept of the equation, y = [-y=2](-1)

(2/3)x + 12. y=-2

Sol: y=mx + b, where m is the slope and b is the y- Answer: The x-intercept of the equation is 1 and its
intercept. y-intercept is -2.
 By just looking at the given, we can already
state that 12 is the y-intercept in the
equation. Equation of a line
- Now we are going to find for the value of x. General Form Ax+By+C=0
Where A,B, and C are all real
y= (2)x + 12 → Make the value of y equals to 0
numbers and A & B are not
0=(2)x + 12 → Transport the equation to the other equal to zero.
Standard Form ax+bx=c
side except for the value with x. Where a,b, and c are integers,
meaning no decimal or
2x = -12 → Solve for the value of x fractions, and a is positive.
[2x = -12](2) Slope-intercept y=mx+b
Form where m is the slope and b
x=-6. is the y-intercept.
Two-point Form Let's say, (-3,4), then substitute into the equation
y=mx + b to solve for the value of b in the equation.
4 = (-3/8)(-3) + b
[4 = (9/8) + b] (8)

Where (x,y) is the [32 = 9 + 8b] -9

arbitrary point on the line. [23 = 8b] (8)
Point-Slope Form
23/8 = b
Where m is the slope and
(x,y) is the arbitrary point
on the line. Now, we have all the values we need. Next, we are
going to substitute the values we got to make the
equation of the line.
Examples: SLOPE INTERCEPT FORM
Answer: y= (-3/8)x + 23/8 or simply 8 =-3x +

TWO POINT FORM

Find the equation of the line passing through
points (3,5) and (-2,-4)

Solution;
Givens: (x1 = 3, y1 = 5) and (x2 = -2, y2 = -4)
And let (x,y) be the arbitrary point.
- Look at this line.
The slope (m) of the line is 2/3 and the y-intercept
Steps: 1. Select any point from the given.
(b) is 2. Thus, the equation of the line is, y = 2/3x +
2 Let’s say, (3,5)

Illustrative example: 2. Substitute it with the formula:

Find the equation of the line passing through (- (y-y1) = [(y2-y1)/(x2-x1)] (x-x1)
3,4) and (5,1).
(y-5) = [(-4-5)/(-2-3)] (x-3)
[y-5 = (-9/-5) (x-3)] (-5)
Sol: Steps: 1. Solve for the slope.
-5y+25 = -9(x-3)
(x1 = -3, y1 = 4) and (x2 = 2, y2 = 1)
-5y+25 = -9x+27
m = (y2 – y1) / (x2 – x1)
Answer: 9x-5y=2 or 9x-5y-2=0
m = (1-4)/(5-(-3))
m = -3/8
POINT-SLOPE FORM
1. Find the equation of the line with the slope of 3
2. Select any point on the line. and passing through point (1,5)
Sol: Substitute then simplify. 3. Find the equation of the line with a slope of -4
and passing through point (-8,-1).
y-y1 = m(x-x1)
y-5 = 3(x-1)
y-5 = 3x-3
y = 3x-3+5

Answer: y=3x+5 or 3x-y = -2

2. What is the equation of the line containing

the point (-4,7) with a slope of ½.
y-y1 = m(x-x1)
[y-7 = ½ (x-(-4)] (2) 4. What is the equation of the line containing point
(-2,8) with a slope of -1/4.
2y-14 = x+4
REMEMBER: -1/4 is different form –(1/4) and 1/-
x-2y+18 = 0 or x-2y = 18 4.
