PLOT
Gilbert: Gilbert is described in the books as being very handsome with brown, curly hair
and hazel eyes. He is tall with a lean build and used to wear an aegean hat. He tries to get
Anne’s attention.
Anne: An imaginative, talkative, red-haired orphan who comes to live with Matthew and
Marilla Cuthbert at age 11. Anne is very sensitive and dislikes the colour of her hair. Anne's
bleak early childhood was spent being shuttled from orphanage to foster homes, caring for
younger children. She is excited to finally have a real home at Green Gables.
Matthew: Marilla's brother, a shy, kind man who takes a liking to Anne from the start. The two
become fast friends and he is the first person who has ever shown Anne unconditional love.
Although Marilla has primary responsibility for rearing Anne, Matthew has no qualms about
"spoiling" her and indulging her with pretty clothes and fancy shoes.
Marilla Cuthbert: Matthew's sister, an austere but fair woman who has the "glimmerings of
a sense of humour." Her life has been colourless and without joy until the arrival of Anne. She
tries to instill discipline in the child but grows to love Anne's vivacity and joy.
Mr.Phillips: Anne's first teacher at Avonlea, Mr. Phillips is unpopular with students. In Anne's
case, he continually misspells her name (without the "E") and punishes only her among twelve
pupils who arrive late, resulting in Anne's refusal to attend school for several weeks. Once, he
punished Anne for losing her temper with Gilbert Blythe. He is described as lacking discipline,
and "courts" one of his older pupils, Prissy Andrews, openly.
SCENES
1R SCENE
Marilla Cuthbert: wants to adopt a young guy to help her with the work on the farm. There he
sees Anne.
T-the five-thirty train has come and gone half an hour ago, but a passenger asked for you; a
little girl. She's sitting there on those shingles. I suggested you wait inside, but you answered
very seriously that you'd rather stay out. 'There's more field for imagination,'' he let go of me.
What a girl...-
M- I'm not waiting for a girl, I've come for a boy. And he should have come by now. Mrs.
Alexander Spencer had to bring it to me from Nova Scotia -
T- There may be some mistake, but Mrs. Spencer brought her in and left her to me and told
me that you and your sister would pick her up. I don't know anything else about other
orphans. -
M- I don't understand anything -
T- You'd better ask the girl you can see that she speaks up by the elbows -
A- You must be Matthew Cutbert of Green Texas, I'm so glad to see you. I was beginning to
think I wouldn't come to pick myself up and I'd have to sleep here, I'm not afraid, and it
would have been wonderful to sleep on wild cherry trees and I was sure that if I didn't pick up
today I'd come tomorrow –
M- I'm sorry I'm late, come on, I got the carriage in the yard. Give me your suitcase -
A-Oh, I can take her myself. It doesn't weigh much, I carry in it all my earthly possessions
and goods, but it's light. I'd better take her. If I don't take it the way I get the handle, it's a
very old suitcase -
M-Okey, Let's go -
