The people that used the artefact were soldiers in the army
during the Crusades. The shield was used by the European
Christian army to defend and fight against the Muslims. The
shield I made depicts a lion which represented a threat to
those who were fighting against the shield user. The European
Christian army fought against the Muslims, needing to use
shields to fight against them to deflect and block attacks. The
shields were made of wood, which made them versatile and
light to use. There was lots of war and famine during the
middle ages, a lot of it coming from poverty. They had a lot of
fights and arguments that lead to wars breaking out. The
shield represents the middle class of the knights that used it.
Peasants were the lowest social group in the Middle Ages. The
knights were fighting for there life to protect there family,
friends and home land, listening to their kings
commandments, whilst being middle class. The second
highest class was the lord, who is considered upper class. The
lord was one of the richest in the Middle Ages, who owned a
lot of land and had a lot of food. Then the highest class the
king. The king was the one that ruled the land and
commanded their armies on what to do. The shield was used
mostly in 1000-1200 CE during the time of the Crusades. The
Crusades was a time that required many weapons and armour
as the huge religious war was taking part. The shield was
mostly used in the battlefield to protect the person with their
off hand, whilst they used a sword or other weapon in their
main hand. Outside of battle the shield had little to no
purpose. It was significant as it represented one of the largest
religious wars to ever exist, the Crusades. The shields were
important to them because the shield represented something
their country and family who used those shields for war and
protecting their land. It was important as it allowed for the
user to protect themselves and come home safe to their
families. The shield is a world renowned tool that all armies
and fighters for all of history have used and is recognised all
around the world, from starting from the bronze age, into the
middle ages and even being used in modern day by different
people.
