Hareth - Landlord

Keerthana - Labourer

Niranjana - Manager/Advisor of Landlord (Witness)

Kamya - Judge

Hashikaa - Public Prosecutor

Dhiksha - Narrator / Defence Lawyer

Scene 1 (Landlord promises laborer) :

Manager: Sir, a lady has come to meet you asking for work.
Landlord : Hmm, bring her in.
(*Laborer walks in*)
Labourer : Sir, I am a widow with 5 children and need work. Please give me
work to do sir. I can do all agricultural work very well. Please give me a well-paid
job.
Landlord : Fine, you can work in the field. I’ll give you ₹500 every month for your
work. For every holiday, a rupee will be deducted from your overall monthly
salary.
Labourer : Okay sir, thank you so much !
Narrator : One month goes by and the landlord , Hareth,
refuses to pay the laborer saying he is at a loss and will give 1000 rupees the
next month. This goes on for 7 months.
Scene 2 (Niranjana sympathizes for Keerthana):
Niranjana : Here you go, 300 rupees for this month. Is the landlord still cheating
you ?
Keerthana : I believe in him. He will definitely give me all the money after he gets
a profit. Then, I can also pay you for all the help that you've done to me these 7
months.
Niranjana : You still believe him ? It is so obvious that he is exploiting you.
Keerthana : Well, even if it were true, what can I, a poor laborer do against a
huge landlord like him ?
Niranjana : Don't think like that. This is why we have fundamental rights. I am
going to file a case against him.
Scene 3 (Court scene) :
Judge : Case No : CC756, Hearing No : 1 , case type: Exploitation

Judge : The court is assembled here to discuss the trial of Hareth. May the
victims and offenders stand before the court. Let the trial begin.

Defense Lawyer : Your honor, Keerthana willingly entered into an employment

contract with Hareth, acknowledging the terms and conditions set forth. She agreed to a
monthly salary of ₹500 with a deduction of ₹1 for each holiday. This was a mutual
agreement between two parties, and my client fulfilled his part by providing her with
work. Now, due to unforeseen losses in agricultural activities, there occurred a delay in
payments. My client, Hareth, communicated this to Keerthana promising compensation
once profited. Therefore, it is clearly obvious that this is a matter of a temporary setback
in business and nothing of exploitation !

Public Prosecutor: Objection, your honor. The defense is trying to divert the court from
the exploitation happening by framing it as a “temporary setback”. The fact remains that
Keerthana was never paid and the promises of compensation were never fulfilled. This
is a clear case of exploitation and a breach of the agreed-upon terms.

Judge: Objection sustained. Please proceed, defense lawyer.

Defense lawyer : Your honor, Keerthana entered into an employment contract knowing
the risk associated with agricultural work. While there were delays in payments, my
client, Hareth, assured Keerthana of compensation once his financial situation
improved.

Public Prosecutor (Hashikaa): Your Honor, the defense is trying to distract the court
from the case of exploitation at hand. This is a clear violation of the agreed-upon terms,
and we must hold Hareth accountable for his actions.

Defense Lawyer (Dhiksha): (interrupting) Your Honor, my client is not exploiting anyone.
He's facing challenges beyond his control. Agricultural businesses are unpredictable,
and Hareth is doing his best to overcome these challenges.
Public Prosecutor (Hashikaa): (sarcastically) Challenges? These so-called challenges
conveniently arise every time Keerthana is supposed to receive her payment. It's a
pattern of exploitation, and we cannot ignore it.

Defense Lawyer (Dhiksha): (defensively) Your Honor, this is not an act of exploitation.
It's a temporary setback that my client is working to rectify. Keerthana is not being
denied her rightful compensation; it's just delayed.

Public Prosecutor (Hashikaa): (aggressively) Delayed? Seven months of delays is not

just a temporary setback! It's a clear violation of Keerthana's rights, and Hareth must be
held accountable for this injustice.

Defense Lawyer (Dhiksha): (raising her voice) Your Honor, I request you to consider the
larger context here. Hareth is not denying Keerthana's rights; he's committed to
compensating her once the financial situation improves.

Public Prosecutor (Hashikaa): (frustrated) Your Honor, the defense is just trying to paint
a rosy picture. The truth is that Hareth is exploiting Keerthana's vulnerability for his
benefit.

Defense Lawyer (Dhiksha): (firmly) Your Honor, I won't let these unproven accusations
stand.

Judge (Kamya): Order! Order! Order ! Order in the court! This behavior is unacceptable.
Both the prosecution and defense will conduct themselves professionally, or I will have
to take strict action. Let's proceed with the trial in an orderly manner.

Defense Lawyer : I would like to bring to the court's attention the role of the witness,
Niranjana. Despite the alleged exploitation, Niranjana provided financial assistance to
Keerthana during these months. If the situation was as dire as portrayed, why would
someone support the victim financially?

Judge : Public Prosecutor ?

Public Prosecutor : Your Honor, she did that out of sympathy for Keerthana and her
children. She couldn't stand by and watch them suffer. As a basic human being with
morals and values, unlike some other people here (looks at defense lawyer and
landlord), she supported Keerthana financially. She waited every month, hoping that the
landlord would finally pay Keerthana, but after 7 whole months, decided to file a case
knowing that this was going to continue.
Judge : Noted, Prosecutor, the points will be taken into account. Let the court be
adjourned while the jury presents their views to me.

(1 hour later)

Judge : After careful consideration of the given situation, the court rules in favor of Keerthana.
While Hareth had temporary setbacks, he would have had to have considered these risks
before entering into a contract with Keerthana. The court orders Hareth to compensate
Keerthana with ₹7000 of which 3500 he was supposed to have paid and 3500 as compensation
for the sufferings of Keerthana according to the fundamental right against exploitation. I further
order him to pay ₹2000 to the manager for her troubles of helping Keerthana. The court further
awards Niranjana with ₹1500 for her honesty and her unwavering commitment toward humanity.

Narrator : This play hopes to explain two pillars of fundamental rights : Right to constitutional
remedies and Right against Exploitation. Hareth paid the money to the manager and Keerthana.
The play ends on a positive note and we conclude by saying the Justice delayed, is justice
denied !
