Exercise 1:
1.
A: So tell me about Tokyo. What's it like?
B: I love it. There are so many great things to do. I'm busy all the time.
2.
A: Do you like living here?
B: Well, it's okay. One thing I do like is that there's very little noise. People don't walk
down the street with loud radios or anything. It's pretty nice.
3.
A: Do you like it here?
B: It's okay. But it's awfully crowded and the air is so dirty. To tell you the truth, I'm
thinking about moving.
4.
A: What's it like living in New York?
B: Oh, it's really a great city, but you have to pay a fortune for everything.
5.
A: Is Auckland a very big city? Is it crowded?
B: Not really. It's really quite small. It's never very crowded or noisy. In fact, it's like a
small town in many ways.
6.
A: So what's San Francisco like? I hear it's very scenic.
B: Yes, it is. The Golden Gate Bridge is great any time of year. The parks and the ocean
are beautiful, too. It really is a very lovely city.
7.
A: What's your hometown like? Is it a nice place to live?
B: It's great, especially for families with children. It's pretty and quiet and it isn't
dangerous at all.
8.
A: Is Osaka a big place?
B: Sure. That's why I like it. Lots of
people. Lots of nightclubs and discos. I don't like small cities.
Exercise 2:
1.
A: How do you like where you're living?
B: Oh, I love it. There's so much to do here. And I have a lot of friends here, too.
2.
A: What's your city like?
B: Well, the good thing is there are a lot of things to do here. There are good theaters
and restaurants. The trouble is it's getting very polluted, so it's not as nice as it used
to be.
3.
A: Do you enjoy where you're living?
B: Well, I enjoy a lot about it. The city has a very nice climate~It's never too hot or too
cold. And it's a safe place to live.
4.
A: What's it like to live in this city?
B: Well, it's very noisy and crowded. And the pollution is getting really bad. And I think
we have one of the worst transportation systems in the world. I'd love to live
somewhere else.
5.
A: How is it here, anyway? Is this a nice place to live?
B: Oh, I'm really glad we moved here. The air is fresh and the people are very friendly.
Rents are pretty reasonable, and it's a very safe city, too. That's so important. Also,
it's close to the sea, so it's great in the summer.
6.
A: Do you enjoy living here?
B: Some things are okay. The restaurants are pretty good, and the subway system is
pretty good, too, but it's very old and not very clean. The weather also isn't that great.
It's very hot and humid in the summer and pretty cold in the winter. But in general,
it's not too bad.

Answer 2: Well, I live in a small village with my family. It’s called Thanh Xuan. My
village is well known for delicious kinds of food, and I am happy about this. It’s also
famous for some festivals, and many people go to my village to enjoy festivals on Tet
holiday. I have been living in this place over the last 20 years. I really love living here
because the air is fresh, and I can enjoy nature at any time. My village is an exciting
place for everyone, but sometimes I feel quite sad because it’s too quiet, and there
are not many places for young people to go. My hometown hasn’t changed much,
but I think it will become more different in the future.

Passage 1:
Coober Pedy: The underground town
Coober Pedy is a very small town in Australia. It’s very hot and it hardly ever rains.
There’s no water and there aren’t many trees, but near Coober Pedy, there are opals
under the ground - lots of them! Coober Pedy is the opal capital of the world.
A lot of people in Coober Pedy work in the opal mines. The mines are underground
and the houses are underground too because it’s cool down there. The houses are
very comfortable but they don’t have windows or gardens. There are underground
shops and restaurants, and there's also an underground swimming pool. A lot of
tourists come to Coober Pedy to visit the underground buildings - some of these
buildings are 100 years old or even older. There are four or five hotels and there’s also
a campsite where visitors can stay. There’s a museum about the history of the town
and a big tourist information centre. The roads to Coober Pedy are good and there’s
an airport, but there isn’t a railway station.
Passage 2:
Our town: What’s wrong and what can we do about it?
1.
Our town looks a mess and that’s not good for tourism. I hate the litter in our streets.
Why can’t people put it in the bins? It’s not difficult. We need to educate people
quickly. We need more litter bins and billboards saying ‘Don’t drop it – Bin it!’ and
things like that. We also need to punish people who drop litter. I think they should
spend a day picking it up.
Charlie, 14
2.
People always complain about the kids in our town. They don’t like us hanging out in
the shopping centre. They say they don’t feel safe. But they’re wrong. We never cause
trouble. We only meet up there because there’s nowhere for us to go. It’s not easy
being a kid. We
need more things for young people to do and more places for us to go. A youth club
would be great. There are lots of empty buildings in our town centre. They could use
one of them.
Mack, 15
3.
The biggest problem in our town is the cars. There are too many cars on our roads
and the drivers don’t care about the pedestrians. They drive really fast. Some of them
don’t even stop at zebra crossings! I ride my bike everywhere and I just don’t feel
very safe, even when I’m in a cycle lane. We can stop this problem easily. Let’s get
more speed cameras to catch these fast drivers and then stop them from driving in
our town.
Pauline, 15
4.
People like to complain about the graffiti on the shops in the high street. They think
it’s ugly. I agree that a lot of it is. But if you look closely, some of this art is really good.
Some of these people paint really well. Why don’t we use them to make the town
more attractive?
I think we should create graffiti walls where these artists can show off their art.
Maybe this will stop the problem of them doing it illegally.

UNIT 5: PLACES
Writing: Write about your hometown
Hai Phong is well-known for beautiful places such as Do Son Beach, Cat Ba Island and
Lan Ha Bay. People often go there to avoid the heat and pollution in big cities. They
also love going in food tours in Hai Phong because there are many delicious dishes
like seafood, noodle soup with crab, spicy bread sticks and crab spring rolls. The local
people are busy and have a fast pace of life because they are still friendly and often
help others. My hometown is a modern city with a lot of high buildings, crowded
traffic and many green spaces. I have good memories of my hometown so I love it
