In 1871, the Rugby Football Union (RFU) was formed to manage rugby in England. RFU
organizes the Six Nations Championship and the Heineken Cup. RFU's mission is to maximize
profits to support volunteers and lower-level clubs, it entered into a five-year deal with IBM to
capture and analyze Big Data, its TryTracker system uses predictive analytics to track keys to the
game, momentum, and key players. TryTracker provides data visualization and real-time
statistics to engage fans.
the article also discusses the increasing importance of information systems in business, the
growth of the digital economy, and the strategic objectives that businesses aim to achieve
through the use of information systems. American businesses are investing billions of dollars
in information systems hardware, software, and telecommunications equipment. Private business
investment in information technology has grown significantly over the years. The widespread
use of information systems and technology is transforming social life and business practices and
mobile phones and tablets have become essential tools for conducting business. Online social
networks and e-commerce are expanding rapidly. Businesses are using information technology to
sense and respond to customer demand, reduce costs, and improve operational efficiency,
therefore, the growth of digital information is creating new challenges for businesses in terms of
storage and management and the emergence of the mobile digital platform, big data, and cloud
computing are major trends in the field of management information systems.
The article introduces the concepts of information systems and technology, explaining their
definitions and components. It discusses the role of information systems in decision making,
coordination and control within an organization. The following section also highlights the
difference between data and information, and the three activities of an information system: input,
processing, and output. It emphasizes the importance of understanding the broader organizational
and managerial dimensions of information systems, as well as the complementary assets required
for successful implementation. Firstly, Information technology consists of hardware and software
used by a firm to achieve its business objectives. Information systems are sets of interrelated
components that collect, process, store, and distribute information to support decision making
and control in an organization. Information systems help analyze problems, visualize complex
subjects, and create new products this can involves input, processing, and output activities.
the article differentiate also data which are raw facts, and information is data that has been
shaped into a meaningful form. Complementary assets, such as supportive organizational culture
and strong management support, are necessary for successful information technology
investments. The value of information systems lies in their ability to improve decision making,
enhance organizational performance, and increase firm profitability.
The study of information systems is a multidisciplinary field that combines technical and
behavioral approaches to understand the development and use of information systems.
Information systems are sociotechnical systems that require both technical and behavioral
investments. The technical approach focuses on mathematically based models and the physical
technology of information systems. Computer science, management science, and operations
research contribute to the technical approach, while the behavioral approach explores issues such
as strategic integration, design, implementation, and management of information systems.
Management of information systems combine computer science, management science, and
operations research to develop practical solutions. The sociotechnical view emphasizes
optimizing both the social and technical systems used in production, thus, the performance of a
system is optimized when the technology and organization mutually adjust to each other.
Analysis:
Discuss how the chapter's content relates to other material we have covered in this
course. Make connections to concepts, theories, or discussions from lectures, readings, or
assignments:
The article get on well with the course by defining how information systems are transforming
business with the emerging mobile digital platform and growing business use of “big data” and
cloud computing, or also by focusing on the reason of the increasing use of it among companies
since it involves operational excellence, the development of new products and services, customer
and supplier intimacy, improved decision making, competitive advantage, and survival and
compliance. The article mentions also the two notions seen in the course which are data and
information including their point of difference.
What did you find most interesting or surprising in the chapter, and
why?
In this chapter, the most interesting aspect is the concept of complementary assets, and how
they contribute to the success of information technology investments. The most suprising part is
the fact that investing in information technology alone does not guarantee good returns, and that
firms need to invest in supportive values, structures, and behavior patterns in order to fully
benefit from their IT investments. This highlights the importance of organizational and
managerial factors in the success of information systems, and it also emphasizes the need for a
holistic approach considering the broader organization and management dimensions of
information systems, rather than focusing solely on technology.
Do you agree or disagree with the author's arguments? Provide reasons and evidence to
support your position.
I totally agree with the author’s arguments. Information systems are crucial for business
success and competitiveness. They help businesses improve operational efficiency by
streamlining processes, automating tasks, and reducing errors, leading to higher profitability and
cost savings. Companies like Walmart and Apple have transformed industries by introducing
innovative technologies and online distribution models. Information systems also enable better
understanding and service of customers and suppliers by collecting and analyzing customer data,
improving customer satisfaction. High-end hotels and JCPenney have used information systems
to track guest preferences and provide personalized experiences.
How does the chapter's content apply to current events or societal issues? Offer specific
examples :
The chapter's content applies to current events and societal issues by highlighting the
importance of information systems in enabling remote work and online collaboration during the
COVID-19 pandemic, the rise of e-commerce and online retail, the increasing use of data
analytics and big data, and the ongoing debate around data privacy and security. These examples
demonstrate the relevance of information systems in today's digital age and their impact on
various aspects of business and everyday life.
What questions or topics for further exploration did the chapter raise for you?
The chapter raised several questions and topics for further exploration, including the major
recent trends and developments in information systems and technologies, or also the potential
impacts of emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence and blockchain, on information
systems and business operations?....
