PART I.
A. Introduction

Technique and production go hand in hand. There is no production without any technique. Some
contemporary artists did not study fine arts or any other formal studies about arts. Some learn by interacting
with other artist by studying on their own by going around, visiting places to get ideas on what they would
want to create. They even conduct experiments of materials, especially recyclable ones, to find out which
material would work in the production of their artwork. They adopt and construct their concept to integrate
with their artwork. Careful planning of techniques and design is done. These artist, undergo rigid practice
and experimentation before finalizing the production of his particular artwork.

B. Discussion

COLLAGE

Collage is a technique of an art production primarily used in the visual arts, where the artwork is
made from an assemblage of different forms, thus creating a new whole.

It may sometimes include magazines and newspaper clippings, ribbons, paints, bits of colored and
handmade papers, portions of other artwork or texts, photographs, and other found objects, glued to a piece
of paper or canvas.

LAND – ART

Earthworks or earth arts is an art movement in which landscapes and the work of art are Inextricably
linked. It is also an art form that is created in nature, using natural materials such as soil, rock (bed rock,
boulders, stones) organic media (logs, branches, leaves), and water which introduced materials such as
concrete, metal, asphalt, or mineral pigments. Sculpture is not placed in the landscape rather the landscape is
the means of their creation. Often earth moving equipment is involved. The works frequently exist in the
open, located well away from civilization, left to change and erode under natural conditions.

DIGITAL ARTS
Digital arts is an artistic work or practice that uses digital technology as an essential part of the
creative or presentation process. Digital art is placed under the large umbrella termed new media art.

After some resistance, the impact of digital technology has transformed activities such as paintings,
drawings, sculpture, and music/sound art, with new form such as net art and digital installation art. Digital
installation art, and virtual reality have become recognized artistic practices. Generally, the term digital artist
is used to describe an artist who makes use of digital technologies in the production of art. Digital Art is a
term applied to contemporary art that uses the method of mass production or digital media.

The digital techniques are used extensively by the mainstream media in advertisements and by
filmmakers to produce visual effects. Both digital and traditional artists use many sources of electronic
information and programs to create their work.

Served as the co-director of the animated film Inside Out, Ronnie del Carmen shared that he had to
use his own life experiences to create this masterpiece. He also landed a job as an animator in Warner Bros
and became a storyboard artist for Batman: The Animated Series.

2
GRAFFITI
Graffiti are writings or drawings that have been scribbled, scratched or painted illicitly on a wall or
other surface, often in a public space.

Graffiti may express underlying social and political messages, and whole genre of artistic expression
based on spray paint graffiti styles. An example of this is the Singapore art bridge just beside the Oxford
hotel where the writer stayed in for their visit to Singapore. It is said to be painted by a Batanes-born artist.

PRINTMAKING

Printmaking is the process of making artworks by painting, normally in the paper? Print are created
by transforming ink from a matrix or through a prepared screen to a sheet of paper or other material.
Common types of matrices include metal plates, usually copper or zinc, or polymer plates for engraving or
etching; stone aluminum or polymer for lithography; blocks of wood for wood crafts and wood engravings;
and linoleum for linocuts. Screens made of silk or synthetic fabrics are used for screen printing process.

The discussed techniques eventually became parts in the production of different artworks, by Filipino
contemporary artists.

MIXED – MEDIA
Mixed – media refers to artwork in the making of which more than one medium has been employed.
It refers to a work of visual art that combines various traditionally distinct visual art media. For example,
work on canvas that combines paint, ink and collage.

When creating a painted or photographed work using mixed media, it is important to choose the
layers carefully and allow enough dying time between the layers to ensure the final work will have structural
integrity. If many different media are used, it is equally important to choose a sturdy foundation upon which
the different layers are imposed.

Many effects can be achieved by using mixed media. Found objects can be used in conjunction with
the traditional arts to attain a wide range of self-expression.

WHAT TECHNIQUES ARE USED TO MAKE CONTEMPORARY ARTWORK?

Contemporary art is often looked at with a skeptical eye. The truth about contemporary art is that it
uses techniques that most people aren’t quite used to, causing that skepticism to come into play. However,
these techniques are actually quite difficult and all deserve our credit. It’s an incredible feat to create a piece
of contemporary art, especially using these techniques. They challenge the mind and offer unique
perspectives in a way that art has never been able to do before. For that reason, they’re some of the most
valuable techniques that a person can experience through artwork. Here are three techniques that are among
the most relevant in contemporary art today.

1. MINIMALISM

One of the artistic techniques that has been most relevant throughout the contemporary art movement
is minimalism. Minimalism seeks to take away what’s unnecessary and leaving only what’s essential.
Minimalism is incredibly difficult but has made its way into being a huge part of branding and design for
companies all over the world. This is probably the most important part of contemporary art, as it has
informed so much of society. Have you noticed that branding has gotten more minimalist over the past ten
years or so? You can thank the contemporary art movement for doing that.

2. FOUND OBJECTS
Taking something that people view as useless, and then using it in a unique way in order to make
artwork is one of the most important movements that currently exist in contemporary artwork. The idea is
that things that we often view as junk are actually more valuable than we think they are. Everything you find
can be used to tell a story, or to create new diverse perspectives that we’re looking for when we attend an art
exhibition. Currently, the found objects movement is one of the most important movements in all of
contemporary art.

3. LARGE-SCALE ART

Walter De Maria created an art piece in 1977 that included a four hundred steel poles over one mile
by one kilometer. That’s incredible. Creating something huge to express diverse perspectives in artwork is
incredibly popular, even today. Over the past forty years, large scale art, and art that includes the
environment has come into its own as one of the most important movements within contemporary art. That’s
why you often see modern art pieces alongside buildings, or as huge structures out in the open.

CONTEMPORARY ARTWORK RELIES ON CERTAIN TECHNIQUES

With every new age of art, there are new unique techniques that define how the movement develops.
For contemporary art, among many techniques, you can find techniques such as minimalism, found objects,
and large scale paintings. Each of these bring their own unique perspective into the artistic community, and
each is valued as a pick for a technique that is most influential in contemporary art. Look out for these when
you’re out at an exhibition. Perhaps, you’ll find that they’re much more relevant than you think they are.

D. Examples

Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras

For 2,000 years, the high rice fields of the Ifugao have followed the contours of the mountains. The
fruit of knowledge handed down from one generation to the next, and the expression of sacred traditions and
a delicate social balance have helped to create a landscape of great beauty that expresses the harmony
between humankind and the environment.
