CROCHET PATTERN BY
Welcome!
I hope you will enjoy the creation of this blue whale! Please don't hesitate to contact me at
hello@theresascrochetshop.com with any questions that you may have along the way. Have fun!

Did You Know?

• The blue whale is the largest animal on the earth. Their hearts can be as big as a car and beat loud
enough to be heard from 2 miles (3,000 meters) away.
• The whale’s tongue alone weighs as much as an elephant!
• A baby blue whale measures up to 25 feet (8 meters) long, can weigh about 4 tons, and drinks 50-
100 gallons (liters) of milk every day! All this nursing is necessary because baby whales grow about
200 pounds (90 kilograms) per day!

Did you know I have a YouTube channel? I’m posting a growing selection of how-to videos that may
help you when crocheting this pattern! Here are a couple videos for this whale pattern:

Notes
1. Safety eyes can be found on Etsy, Amazon, eBay, or your local craft store. The safety eyes are
recommended, but they can be substituted with embroidered eyes if you prefer.

2. This pattern is crocheted in continuous rounds (you will not join each round).

3. In my patterns, I begin each circle with “ch 2, 6 sc in first ch.” Another way of beginning is to start
with a magic circle. If you are more familiar with this method, just do 6 sc into your magic circle.

4. Single crochet decrease stitch explanation:

Insert the hook into the next stitch and yarn over. Pull a loop through so that there are now 2
loops on the hook. Insert the hook into the next stitch and yarn over. Pull a loop through so that
there are now 3 loops on the hook. Yarn over again and pull the loop of yarn through all 3 loops
on the hook.

Instructions
Body
With blue yarn,
Round 1: Ch 2, 6 sc in first ch. (6 sts)
R2: Sc 2 in each st around. (12 sts)
R3: (Sc 1, 2 sc in next st), 6 times. (18 sts)
R4: (Sc 2, 2 sc in next st), 6 times. (24 sts)
R5: (Sc 3, 2 sc in next st), 6 times. (30 sts)
R6: (Sc 4, 2 sc in next st), 6 times. (36 sts)
R7: (Sc 5, 2 sc in next st), 6 times. (42 sts)
R8: Sc 42. (42 sts)
R9: (Sc 6, 2 sc in next st), 6 times. (48 sts)
R10-18: Sc 48. (48 sts x 9 rounds)
R19: Sc 20, dec 1, sc 2, dec 1, sc 1, dec 1, sc 19. (45 sts)
R20: Sc 18, (sc 1, dec 1), 3 times, sc 18. (42 sts)
R21: (Sc 5, dec 1), 6 times. (36 sts)
R22: Sc 12, (sc 1 dec 1), 4 times, sc 12. (32 sts)
R23: (Sc 6, dec 1), 4 times. (28 sts)
R24: Sc 11, (sc 1, dec 1), 2 times, sc 11. (26 sts)

Pause here and insert the safety eyes between R19-R20,

approximately 25 sts apart across the top and 17 sts apart
across the bottom. The easiest way to make sure the eye
placement is correct is to set the whale up and make sure the
eyes are even with each other when the bottom of the whale
is flat on the ground (Figure 1). Firmly press the washers onto
the backs of the eyes.

R25: Sc 10, (sc 1, dec 1), 2 times, sc 10. (24 sts)

Fasten off, and weave the end inside the body. Add a bit
more stuffing as needed to the end of the body, but make
sure to not over-stuff so that the end can still curve up
(Figure 3). Also check that the stuffing is even and there are
no dents or lumps. You can use a stuffing tool to reach inside
the body to push the stuffing around, or use a crochet hook
to pull it as needed.

Your whale’s body will now look as shown in Figure 3.

Whoops! Well, it will in a second! First, time to add the
freckles! ;)
Figure 3: Body

Freckles
Thread your yarn needle with a long strand of white yarn,
knot one end, and insert it into the whale’s body and out
behind the eyes. Sew 3 tiny stitches behind the eyes
(Figure 3). Then weave the yarn through the body and do the
same behind the eye on the other side. Secure with a knot on
your last white stitch and weave the ends inside the body.

Flippers (x2)
With blue yarn,
Figure 4: Flipper Placement
R1: Ch 2, 4 sc in first ch. (4 sts)
R2: (Sc 1, 2 sc in next st), 2 times. (6 sts)
R3: (Sc 1, 2 sc in next st), 3 times. (9 sts)
R4-6: Sc 9. (9 sts x 3 rounds)

Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing. Do not stuff these.
For each flipper, count 2 sts down from the back of the eye
and sew right below the freckles (Figure 4). You can see a
view from the bottom in Figure 5.

Smile Figure 5: Bottom View

See Vid #1 on the Materials page for a video demonstration of
sewing on the smile.
For the smile, cut a long strand of black embroidery floss,
knot one end, thread it onto your yarn needle, and insert it
into the whale’s body and out between R17-R18, or 1 round in
front of the eyes, and 1 st down (Figure 5). Then make one
long stitch across the round to the same spot below the other
eye, 15 sts over. Weave the floss through the whale’s body
and out between R13-R14 (indicated by the arrow in Figure 5),

grab the long stitch you just made, and do a stitch and a knot
to hold it in place. This will create a smile on both sides of the
whale!

Tail Fins (x2)

See Vid #2 on the Materials page for a video demonstration of
sewing on the tail fins.
With blue yarn,
R1: Ch 2, 4 sc in first ch. (4 sts)
R2: (Sc 1, 2 sc in next st), 2 times. (6 sts)
R3: (Sc 2, 2 sc in next st), 2 times. (8 sts) Figure 6: Smile Side View
R4: (Sc 3, 2 sc in next st), 2 times. (10 sts)
R5: (Sc 4, 2 sc in next st), 2 times. (12 sts)
R6: (Sc 5, 2 sc in next st), 2 times. (14 sts)
R7: Sc 14. (14 sts)
R8: (Sc 5, dec 1), 2 times. (12 sts)
R9: (Sc 2, dec 1), 3 times. (9 sts)
R10: (Sc 1, dec 1), 3 times. (6 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing. Do not stuff. Sew the
two tail fins to the end of the whale (Figure 7).
Figure 7: Tail Fins

Now curve the back of the body up with your hands to get the
desired “whale-look.”

And there you go, you are done! Thank you so much for
joining me in making a whale!
