Determine the consequent change in volume. Bulk modulus of the material of the

sphere is equal to 3.14 x 10 11 Nm-2.

b) The pressure of the medium is changed from 1.01 x 10 5 pa to 1.165 x 10 5 pa and

change in volume is 10% keeping temperature. Find the bulk modulus of the

medium.

Two wires of same length and material but of different radii are suspended from

a rigid support. Both carry the same load. Will the stress, strain and extension

in them be same or different.

18. The length, breadth, and thickness of a rectangular sheet of metal are 4.234 m, 1.005m

and 2.01 cm respectively. Give the area and volume of the sheet to correct significant

figures. (Area = 2(lb + bh + hl) Volume = lbh


19. The position of an object moving along x-axis is given by x = a + bt 2, where a = 8.5 m

b = 2.5 ms-2 and t is measured in seconds. What is its velocity at t = 0 s and t = 2 s?

What is the average velocity between t = 2 s and t = 4 s?

A body covers 12 m in 2nd second and 20 m in 4 th second. How much distance will it

cover in 4 seconds after the 5th second?

20. Define the term stress. Give its units and dimensions. Describe the different types of

stress.

21. Define the terms Young’s modulus, bulk modulus and modulus of rigidity. Also give

their units.

22. a) A gas bubble, from an explosion under water, oscillates with a period of T

proportional to pa db Ec . Where p is the static pressure, d is the density of water

and E is the total energy of the explosion. Find the values of a,b and c.

b) Check whether the following equation is dimensionally correct. ½ mv 2 = mgh

23. Deduce the following equations for uniformly acceleration motion by using integration

technique: (i) v = u + at (ii) s n = u + a/2 ( 2n-1)

24. a) Draw stress-strain curve for a loaded wire. On the graph amrk: (i) Hooke’s law

region (ii) elastic limit (iii) yield point (iv) breaking point

b) Show that the elastic potential energy stores per unit volume of a stretched

wire is equal to ½ X Stress X strain.

20.15 g and 20.17 g are added to the box. What is (a) the total mass of the box and (ii)

the difference in the masses of the pieces to correct significant figures?


19. The displacement x of a particle varies with time t as x = 4t2 – 15 t + 25 Find the

position, velocity and acceleration of the particle at t = 0. When will the velocity of the

particle become zero? Can we call the motion of the particle as one with uniform

acceleration?

A body covers 24 m in 2nd second and 48 m in 4th second. How much distance will it

cover in 4 seconds after the 5th second?

20. Define the term strain. Why it has no units and dimensions. What are the different

types of strain?

21. a) State Hooke’s law and hence define modulus of elasticity.

22. a) A small steel ball of radius r is allowed to fall under gravity through a column

of a viscous liquid of coefficient of viscosity η . After some time the velocity of

the body attains a constant value v T. The terminal velocity depends upon (ii)

the weight of the ball mg (ii) the coefficient of viscosity η and (ii) the radius of

the ball r. By the method of dimensions, determine the relation expressing

terminal velocity.

b) Check whether the following equation is dimensionally correct. F.s = mgh

23. Deduce the following equations for uniformly acceleration motion by using integration

technique: (i) s = ut + ½ at2 (ii) v2 –u2 = 2as

24. a) Discuss stress vs strain graph explaining clearly the terms elastic limit, permanent

set, elastic hysteresis and tensile strength.

b) On the basis of stress-strain curves distinguish between ductile, brittle and malleable

materials.
