Gerund

The –ing form a verb that functions a noun is called gerund. As it is a kind of noun, it works
like a noun.
Ali makes mistakes while he is speaking in public.
Speaking in public makes me proud.

These are the following common usages of gerund;


1. Gerund as a subject of a sentence.

Examples:
1. Listening is a very important skill.
2. Understanding people helps us to have a good relationship.
3. Talking to you makes me clam.
4. Leaving the office late will be dangerous.
5. Cooking is a fun to me.

2. Gerund as an object of a verb.


Common verbs followed by gerunds;
Examples:
1. enjoy 8. postpone
1. We really enjoy speaking in public. 2. appreciate 9. delay
2. The manager starts studying a new language. 3. mind 10. keep
3. Sima admires staying home alone. 4. quit (give up) 11. Consider

c. Gerund + Noun like; swimming pool, making mistake, dining room, reading book

7. Gerund following by some fixed phrase (can’t stand, help, stop, tolerate)
Examples:
1. We can’t stand hearing is music
2. He can’t stop him fighting in a battle.
3. The system can’t help changing the situation.
8. Gerund as prohibitions

Examples:
1. Stop smoking
2. No parking
3. No speaking

9. Gerund following possessive adjectives.


Examples:
1. Mom loves her cooking.
2. The president admires your participating in meetings.
3. I enjoy his speaking in public.
10. Gerund following the verbs of perception (find, catch, see. smell, notice, observe, …)
Examples:
1. I was him robbing the bank.
2. The boss notices you deceiving my friends.
3. Laila caught him picking her mobile up.
