10 A lens of focal length 20cm is used to produce a ten times magnified image of a film slide on a screen.
How far must the slide be placed from the lens?
[Hint: f=20 cm; u=?m=-10 (real image); m=v/u] v=10u; 1/10u + 1/u=1/20; 1/20=1/10u + 1/u; 1/20=1 +
10/10 u; 10u/20 =11; u=22 cm. Therefore v=10 x 22=220 cm
11 Determine how far an object must be placed in front of a converging lens of focal length 10cm in order
to produce an erect image of linear magnification 4.
[Hint: f=10 cm; m=4; v=4u] 1/4u-1/u=1/10; -3/4u=1/10; u=-30/4=-7.5 cm.
12 A convex lens of focal length 6cm is held 4cm from a newspaper, which has print 0.5cm high. By
calculation, determine the size and nature of the image produced.
[Hint: f=6 cm; u=-4 cm; hi=0.5 cm; v=-12 cm] m=v/u=hi/ho; ho=1.5 cm. It is virtual, erect and
magnified.
13 A convex lens of focal length 0.10m is used to form a magnified image of an object of height 5mm
placed at a distance of 0.08m from the lens. Find the position, nature and size of the image.
[Hint: u=-0.08 m=-8 cm; f=0.1m=10 cm; ho=5 mm] v=-40 cm; Image will form same side as the object.
m=-40/-8=5; hi= 5 x 5 mm=25 mm. Image is virtual, erect and magnified.
14 An erect image 2cm high is formed 12cm from a lens, the object being 0.5cm high. Find the focal length
of the lens.
[Hint: v=-12 cm; hi=2 cm; ho=0.5 cm] m=2/0.5=4; u=-3 cm; f=4 cm.
15 The filament of a lamp is 80 cm from a screen and a converging lens forms an image of it on a screen,
magnified three times. Find the distance of the lens from the filament and the focal length of the lens.
[Hint: m=3; u=-20 cm; v=60 cm (real image)] 1/f=1/60 + 1/20; f=15 cm.
16 An object 2cm tall is placed on the axis of a convex lens of focal length 5cm at a distance of 10cm from

[Hint: ho=2cm; f=5 cm; u=-10 cm] v=10 cm; Image is formed at a distance 10 cm on the other side of
the object. m=v/u=10/-10=-1. It is real, inverted and same size as the object.
17 A converging lens of focal length 5cm is placed at a distance of 20cm from a screen. How far from the
lens should an object be placed so as to form its real image on the screen?
[Hint: v=20 cm; f=5 cm; u=?] u=-6.66 cm; m=-20/-6.66=-3.003. The image is inverted, real and
enlarged in size.
18 An object 5cm high is held 25cm away from a converging lens of focal length 10cm. Find the position,
size and nature of the image formed. Also draw the ray diagram.
[Hint: h0=5 cm; u=-25 cm; f=10 cm] v=16.66 cm; m=-3.3. Negative signs indicate that it is inverted.
19 At what distance should an object be placed from a convex lens of focal length 18cm to obtain an image
at 24cm from it on the other side? What will be the magnification produced in this case?
[Hint: f=18 cm; v=24 cm] u=-72 cm; m=-1/3=-0.33
20 The magnification produced by a spherical lens is +2.5. What is the nature of image and lens?
[Hint: The value of magnification gives here is 2.5 (Which is more than 1). So, the image is larger than
the object or magnified. A virtual, erect and magnified image can be formed only by a convex lens;
therefore, the nature of lens is convex]
21 What is the nature of the image formed by a convex lens if the magnification produced by a convex lens
is +3?
[Hint: The image will be virtual and erect, since the magnification has positive value]
22 What is the nature of the image formed by a convex lens if the magnification produced by a convex lens
is –0.5?
[Hint: If the magnification produced by the lens is − 0.5, the image will be real and inverted, since the
magnification has a negative (−) value]
23 What is the position of image when an object is placed at a distance of 10cm from a convex lens of focal

[Hint: The position of the image is at infinity when an object is placed at a distance of 10 cm from a
convex lens of focal length 10 cm. Hence, the image is formed at infinity]
24 Describe the nature of the image formed when an object is placed at a distance of 30cm from a convex
lens of focal length 15cm.
[Hint: The image is formed at a distance of 30 cm from the convex lens. The plus sign for image
distance shows that the image is formed on the right side of the convex lens. Only real and inverted
image is formed on the right side of a convex lens; therefore, the image is real and inverted]
25 At what distance from a converging lens of focal length 12cm must an object be placed in order that an
image of magnification 1 will be produced?
[Hint: As magnification is 1, the object should be placed at a distance equal to twice the focal length,
i.e., 24 cm]
