Resillience

Poet's Introduction:
Daud Kamal (1935-1987) was one of the most important Pakistani poets of the 20th century.
He was born in Abbottabad, Pakistan, and educated at the University of Cambridge. His
poetry is known for its rich imagery, its deep spirituality, and its commitment to social
justice.

Analysis of the poem


Title of the Poem:
The title of the poem means, "the capacity to withstand or to recover quickly from
difficulties; toughness and hardships. It is an optimistic poem.

Language:The poet has used rich language that is both easy and difficult to follow.For
example, the line "Desiccated petals of fire" presents a clear image of burning embers, while
the line "Blackened by generations of smoke" suggests a long and storied history.The poem's
meaning is more complex and challenging to grasp. Barnes uses a number of abstract
concepts and symbols, such as "the unendurable," "the curve of joy," and "the cusp of the
moon."

Rythmic scheme:The poem does not follow any strict rythmic scheme.

Rhyming scheme:It's a free verse poem and does not follow any rhyming scheme.

Literary terms used in the Poem:

1)- Imagery

Poet has used a lot of imagery to create a visual picture in the minds of the readers.For
example, the lines "Desiccated petals of fire" and "Blackened by generations of smoke"
evoke clear images of burning embers in the minds of readers. Other examples are 'Boats on
the river' and 'Flowering almond trees'.

2)-Symbolism:
Poet uses symbols throughout the poem to suggest deeper meanings. For example, the
"unendurable" could symbolize suffering or hardship, while the "curve of joy" could
symbolize happiness or growth.

3)-Personification

Human qualities are given to non-human things. For example, the line "The night / Neither
denies nor affirms" suggests that the night has the ability to make decisions and take
actions.These are just a few of the literary terms that Barnes uses in "Sparks". The poem is
rich in language and imagery, and it rewards multiple readings.

Theme:

• Suffering is a part of life, but it does not have to define us.

• Even in the darkest of times, there is always hope for joy.

• We can learn from our suffering and become stronger and more resilient.

• Beauty and joy can be found even in the midst of pain.

Islamic point of view:

Islam also teaches that resilience is an important quality for Muslims to develop. The Prophet
Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "The strong believer is better and more beloved to
Allah than the weak believer." This shows that Allah values strength and resilience in His
Believers.

‫ِاَّن َهّٰللا َم َع الّٰص ِبِر ْیَن‬-‫ٰۤی َاُّیَها اَّلِذ ْیَن ٰا َم ُنوا اْسَتِع ْیُنْو ا ِبالَّصْبِر َو الَّص ٰل وِؕة‬

 believers! Seek comfort in patience and prayer. Allah is truly


with those who are patient.

‫َفِإَّن َم َع اْلُعْس ِر ُيْسًرا‬

 Verily, with every difficulty, there is relief.
