Background of problem
The background of the problem for the paper "Data
Analysis in Quantitative, Qualitative & Mix Method
Research Design" stems from the increasing
recognition of the diverse and complex nature of
research inquiries across various disciplines.
Researchers encounter a spectrum of phenomena
that demand a nuanced and adaptable approach to
data analysis.

Definition of Data
Anlysis

Data analysis is the process of examining,

filtering, adapting, and modeling data to
help solve problems. It plays a crucial role
in understanding what works and what
doesn’t, enabling informed decision-
making for businesses and organizations.
Some key points about data
analysis

1. Types of Data Analysis

- Quantitative Data Analysis: Involves
analyzing numerical data (e.g., profits,
sales) to identify patterns and trends.
- Qualitative Data Analysis: Focuses on
non-numerical data (e.g., surveys, case
studies).
A. Data Analysis of Qualitative
Research
• Data Analysis of Qualitative Research
With Qualitative data analysis, the mass of words generated by
interviews or observational data needs to be described and
summarised. The question may require the researchers to seek
relationships between various themes that have been identified,
or to relate behaviour or ideas to biographical characteristics of
respondents such as age or gender. Implications for policy or
practice may be derived from the data, or interpretation sought of
puzzling findings from previous studies. Ultimately theory could
be developed and tested using advanced analytical techniques.
A. Data Analysis of Qualitative
Research
Analysis of qualitative data usually goes through some or all of
the following stages:
- Familiarisation with the data through review, reading, listening
etc
- Transcription of tape recorded material
- Organisation and indexing of data for easy retrieval and
identification
- Anonymising of sensitive data
- Coding (may be called indexing)
Identification of themes
A. Data Analysis of Qualitative
Research
- Re-coding
- Development of provisional categories
- Exploration of relationships between categories
- Refinement of themes and categories
- Development of theory and incorporation of pre-existing
knowledge
- Testing of theory against the data
- Report writing, including excerpts from original data if
appropriate (eg quotes from interviews)
B. Data Analysis for
Quantitative Research
• Data Analysis for Quantitative Research
Quantitative data analysis methods typically work with
algorithms, mathematical analysis tools, and software to gain
insights from the data, answering questions such as how many,
how often, and how much. Data for quantitative data analysis is
usually gotten from avenues like surveys, questionnaires, polls,
etc. data can also come from sales figures, email click-through
rates, number of website visitors, and percentage revenue
increase.
Here are the steps to achieve
Quantitative Analysis Data

•- Data Validation: This is to evaluate if the data was collected

correctly through the required channels and to ascertain if it
meets the set-out standards stated from the onset.
- Data Editing: Large datasets may include errors where fields
may be filled incorrectly or left empty accidentally.
- Data Coding: This involves grouping and assigning values to
data. It might mean forming tables and structures to represent
the data accurately.
Methods and Techniques of
Quantitative Data Analysis

•There are two main commonly used quantitative data analysis

methods namely the descriptive statistics used to explain certain
phenomena and inferential statistics used to make predictions.
1) Descriptive Statistics
Descriptive statistics as the name implies is used to describe a
dataset. It helps understand the details of your data by
summarizing it and finding patterns from the specific data
sample. The methods used in descriptive statistics include: Mean,
Median, Mode, Percentage, Frequency, Range, Standard
Deviation, and Skewness.
Methods and Techniques of
Quantitative Data Analysis

2) Inferential Statistics
Inferential statistics aim to make predictions or highlight possible
outcomes from the analyzed data obtained from descriptive
statistics. They are used to generalize results and make predictions
between groups, show relationships that exist between multiple
variables, and are used for hypothesis testing that predicts changes
or differences..
C. Data Analysis for Mix Method
Research

Onwuegbuzie and Combs (2010) recently provided an inclusive

definition of mixed analysis that incorporates the definition and
typologies that have been presented in major methodological
works. These works included articles, book chapters, books, and
paper presentations across numerous fields and disciplines such
as the social and behavioral sciences.
C. Data Analysis for Mix Method
Research

Onwuegbuzie and Combs (2010) identified 13 criteria that

represent decisions that mixed researchers make before, during,
and/or after the conduct of their mixed analyses:
1. rationale/purpose for conducting the mixed analysis
2. philosophy underpinning the mixed analysis
3. number of data types that will be analyzed
4. number of data analysis types that will be used
5. time sequence of the mixed analysis
C. Data Analysis for Mix Method
Research

6. level of interaction between quantitative and qualitative analyses

7. priority of analytical components
8. number of analytical phases
9. link to other design components
10. phase of the research process when all analysis decisions are
made
11. type of generalization
12. analysis orientation
13. cross-over nature of analysis
