Tens of thousands of earthquakes happen every year. The vast majority are so
small that only scientific instruments can perceive them. Others are powerful enough that
people can feel them, yet they cause little harm or damage. More powerful earthquakes,
however, can cause buildings, bridges, and other structures to collapse. They may
additionally injure and kill thousands of people and might even cause the land to change
its appearance.
Since most of the Earth's surface is water, numerous earthquakes happen beneath
the planet's oceans. Underwater earthquakes cause the seafloor to move. This results in
the displacement of water in the ocean. When this occurs, a tsunami may form. This is a
wave that forms on the surface and moves in all directions from the place where the
earthquake happened. A tsunami moves extremely quickly and can travel thousands of
kilometres. As it approaches land, the water near the coast gets sucked out to sea. This
causes the tsunamis to increase in height. Minutes later, the tsunami arrives. A large
tsunami - one more than ten metres in height - can travel far inland. As it does that, it can

for oil are endangering the future of 114 of 229 sites. Other factors adding to the risk
include illegal logging and unsustainable water use. All of these are in addition to the

Australia's Great Barrier Reef, the Grand Canyon National Park in the USA, and China's
Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries, which are home to more than 30 per cent of the world's
endangered pandas.
The director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre said it was up to everyone to
protect these sites. She said: "World Heritage is humankind's common heritage, and the
responsibility for its conservation is shared by everyone." She welcomed government
efforts at reducing what they take from the Earth. However, the WWF said that more

France. They have been trained to pick up cigarette ends, paper and other things thrown
on the ground. The birds pick up the litter and put it into a special trash can. This delivers
bird food as a reward. The more litter the birds put in the trash can, the more food they
get.
The head of the theme park explained why it is using the crows. He said there

that nature itself can teach US to take care of the environment." Crows are very sociable

Many foreign people think that Americans usually eat hamburgers. But the truth is
that many people in the US have become vegetarians, who eat little or no meat. Most
Americans, however, like many different kinds of food. They especially like exotic foods,
and restaurants that serve French, Arabic, Mexican, Japanese, Chinese, and African
cuisine are among their favourites.
Americans also love to cook. And they don't always make simple things. Some of
them are really good cooks, and they enjoy preparing fine meals. They spend thousands
of dollars each year on cookbooks and cooking utensils to use in their kitchens. Like
people in many countries, people in the US love to entertain, so they often invite people
to dinner.
When guests arrive, they find a beautiful table with candles and fine china,
because a meal is more appetizing when it is served in pleasant surroundings. When
guests sit down to eat, they eat heartily, and when it is time to clear the table, they feel
good. For many Americans, food that is cooked at home is most scrumptious of all.

In Britain people celebrate Harvest Festival by singing, praying, and decorating
churches with baskets of fruit and food, usually during the month of September. Harvest
Festival reminds Christians of all the good things God gives them. This makes them want
to share with others who are not so fortunate. In schools and in churches, people bring
food from home to a Harvest Festival Service. After the service, the food that has been
put on display is usually made into parcels and given to people in need.
In early times, Harvest Festival used to be celebrated at the beginning of the
harvest season on 1 August and was called Lammas, meaning "loaf Mass". Farmers made
loaves of bread from the new wheat crop and gave them to their local church. They were
used as the Communion bread during a special mass thanking God for the harvest. The
end of the harvest was celebrated with a big meal called a Harvest Supper. The "Lord of
the Harvest" sat at the head of the table. A goose stuffed with apples was eaten along with
a variety of vegetables. Goose Fairs were and still are held in English towns today.

English learners often worry about making mistakes, but mistakes are an
important part of learning a language! Everyone makes mistakes - from beginners to
advanced learners, and native English speakers. In order to learn English well, it is
necessary to overcome the fear of making mistakes. If the primary goal of language use is
communication, then mistakes are secondary considerations that may be dealt with
gradually as awareness of those mistakes increases. On the other hand, students should
not ignore their mistakes. English learners may observe how native speakers express
themselves, and how native expressions differ from the way they might say them. For
example, a Spanish speaker who has been saying "I do it" to express willingness to do

30
something in the immediate future, could, by communicating with native speakers of
English, observe that native speakers actually say "I'll do it". This difference can serve as
a basis for the student to change his way of using the present tense in English. But a
student who is unwilling to communicate in the first place would lose this opportunity to
learn by trial and error.

Humans have dreamed of spaceflight since ancient times. The Chinese used
rockets for ceremonial and military purposes centuries ago, but in the second half of the
20th century, the first rockets were developed to open space to human exploration.
The earliest practical work on rocket engines designed for spaceflight occurred
simultaneously during the early 20th century in three countries: in Russia, by Konstantin
Tsiolkovski; in the United States, by Robert Goddard; and in Germany, by Hermann
Oberth.
The first U.S. satellite, Explorer 1, went into orbit on January 31,1958. In 1961,
Alan Shepard became the first American to fly into space. On February 20,1962, John
Glenn's historic flight made him the first American to orbit Earth.
"Landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to Earth within a decade"
was a national goal set by President John F. Kennedy in 1961. On July 20,1969, Neil
Armstrong took "a giant step for mankind" as he stepped onto the moon. Six Apollo
missions were made to explore the moon between 1969 and 1972.
By the early 1970s orbiting communications and navigation satellites were in
everyday use, and the Mariner spacecraft was orbiting and mapping the surface of Mars.
By the end of the decade, the Voyager spacecraft sent back detailed images of Jupiter and
Saturn, their rings, and their moons.
