41. Read the following passage and based on that answer the questions given below choosing the most
suitable answers from the given options.
Prof. Kathirvelu's student Azeem had come to meet his old teacher. Even after his retirement many
of his students visit him to clear their doubts and discuss about the latest developments in the
economy.
"Hello Azeem How are you? What news?"
"I’m fine sir. Thank you. Sir last week I met two of my friends who are working in the marketing
field. One of them, who is the regional marketing manager of a company selling kitchenware, told
me that in recent months the sale of common kitchenware like pots and pans have fallen drastically.
The other one, who is the marketing manager of a five star hotel group told me that now they are
having roaring business. Isn’t it contradictory? "
"Yes Azeem it is a sad condition. In a recent report OXFARM has disclosed that in India, after the
pandemic the number of people who are hungry have increased from 19 crores to 35 crores. Your
observation is correct. Now we are having a K-shaped economic growth. Hope our policy makers
will notice this and take measures to correct it."
"Sir don’t you think that taxing the wealthy people at a higher rate is a solution for this?"
"Already we have progressive taxation. But his alone will not solve the issue. The Government will
have to ensure that the fruits of the welfare schemes implemented for the poor people reach them."
"Sir, yesterday the RBI has reduced the rate of interest charged by them, on the advances taken by
the commercial banks from RBI. Will it be of any use to the poor?"
"Theoretically it should help everyone including the poor. It is believed that when the repo rate is
reduced the banks will reduce their lending rates and this will help everyone to get cheaper credit.
The problem is that if you don’t have some assets to give as security the banks may not be very
liberal with their lending. But the repo rate reduction may save the economy from the Paradox of
thrift. When the repo rates are high the banks may increase the interest rates on deposits and this in
turn may induce the people to save more. When the savings are high, the money in circulation will
be low and this may affect the demand for goods and services. This in turn may lead to a reduction
in production."
"Sir it is said that now India is facing flight of capital. Is it true?"
"Yes it is true. But it need not be viewed as something bad. Most of the time such outflow of capital
may be a temporary affair. One of the reasons for this is the increase in the interest rates by
countries like USA. When the FIIs find it more attractive to invest in such countries they may divert

their funds. After sometime if they find it lucrative to invest in India they will come back. What is
more important is the strength of our economy. Our economic environment should be strengthened
to withstand temporary aberrations."
"Thank you sir. Talking to you is always a pleasure. Next week I shall come with my classmate
Ramesh."
"Ok,. Bye."
"Bye sir."
