All information contained herein is the intellectual property of Erba Lachema and should not

description of operation and use of the analyzer for laboratory purposes.

1 INTRODUCTION
To be well up in the instruments, please read this manual carefully to have the knowledge
for servicing the instruments perfectly and avoid extra costs and wasting precious time.
In this manual, we are using the following conventions:
LS – stands for Laura Smart
This Laura Smart Service Manual contains the functional descriptions of all analyzers,
operation of the mechanics systems, adjustments and settings, and very important
information for the Service Personnel about the service operations and possible problems.

1.1 Name and serial number


Name: Laura Smart Urine Analyzer
Serial No.: Every instrument has its own serial number, which is printed on the rear panel
label.

1.2 Intended use


Laura Smart Urine analyzers are semi-automated semi-quantitative reader of urine strips for
in vitro diagnostic use. The compact instruments were developed for small clinics, point-of-
cares, and hospitals.
Laura Smart can process 60 samples per hour in normal mode (240 samples per hour in
Smart Timing® mode) and they are intended to determine the following 11 urine parameters
from sample:
• LEU – NITRI - pH – PRO (ALB) - GLU - UBG – BILI – KETO – HEMO - SG
(diagnostic strip DekaPHAN LAURA)
• pH – PRO (ALB) - GLU - UBG – BILI – KETO – HEMO
(diagnostic strip HeptaPHAN LAURA)
• pH – PRO (ALB) - GLU – KETO – HEMO
(diagnostic strip PentaPHAN LAURA)
• SG- pH – PRO (ALB) - GLU
(diagnostic strip TetraPHAN LAURA)
• GLU - KETO
(diagnostic strip DiaPHAN LAURA)
• ALB – CREA
(diagnostic strip MicroalbuPHAN LAURA)

1.3 Integrated software


The integrated software controls the instrument operations, displays, stores, recalls data, and
allows the user to perform QC procedures and modify the user settings. The software version
number can be read out from the from the Self test informations during starting.

Every Laura Smart software version is upgradeable (using an special software and USB pen
drive) by the latest program developed by Erba Lachema, and it can be downloaded from:

2 FOR YOUR SAFETY

2.1 Who Should Use This Manual


This user manual is intended for Erba certified Service Engineers providing product support
for the Erba Laura Smart urine analyzer. The manual includes information about the
operation, maintenance and servicing of the Laura Smart analyzer. It also contains the steps
necessary to perform the setup procedures to tailor the operation of the analyzer to the
requirements of your laboratory.This manual also maintenance requirements to keep the
analyzer functioning properly.

2.2 Special Symbols Used In This Manual

2.3 General Precautions


Make sure to retain the original packaging material for safe transportation and
storage in the future.
To ensure reliable operation and reliable results:
 Only human urine samples should be analyzed
 Only genuine Erba strips should be used
 Required maintenance (user and service level) should be performed as
recommended in this manual
 Only Erba certified service personnel should perform service actions
 Only genuine Erba service materials and spare parts should be used
Only Erba certified service personnel that have successfully completed the
‘Laura/Laura Smart Service Training‘ program are qualified to service the
analyzer.
The IVD equipment complies with the emission and immunity requirements
described in relevant part of the IEC 61326 series.
Electromagnetic environment should be evaluated prior to operation of the
device.
This analyzer contains electronic components. Please handle
electronic waste adhering to local or federal regulations.

2.4 Environmental Factors


Operate the Laura Smart analyzer within the ambient temperature range of 15-30°C (59-86
°F) and a relative humidity range of 10% - 80%. The optimum operating temperature is 25°C
(~77°F).
Avoid exposing the Laura Smart analyzer to direct sunlight or to extreme high or low
temperatures. If the Laura Smart analyzer was subjected to extreme temperatures during

shipment or storage, the analyzer must be placed for at least one hour in a room whose
temperature is within the operational range before installation or use.

2.5 Electrical Requirements


The analyzer should only be operated from a wall outlet meeting these power input
requirements:
 100-127VAC/200-240VAC; 47Hz to 63Hz
 Power Consumption: maximum 18 VA
Please ensure that the wall outlet is also capable of supplying the power consumption of any
additional devices (such as a printer).
Only the adaptor supplied with the instrument should be used. If the power network is not
reliable, contact your representative for options such as the installation of an external UPS
module.

The instrument should not be placed near potentially interfering devices capable of emitting
radio frequencies (e.g. radio or television transmitters/receivers, radars, centrifuges, X-ray
devices, fans, etc.).
This analyzer is designed to be safe for transient voltages to INSTALLATION CATEGORY II
and POLLUTION DEGREE 2.

2.6 Space Requirements


It is important to install the instrument in a suitable location. A poor location can adversely
affect its performance.
Select a well-ventilated location near a power source and close to a suitable drain.
Place the unit on a clean, level surface. Leave at least 0.25 m (10 inches) space on both
sides and above the instrument

2.7 Waste Disposal


Used diagnostics strips contains human urine and should be considered to be a potential
infection and biohazard threat. Safe laboratory practices must be followed including the use
of personal protective when operating the Laura Smart and handling samples and used
strips.

2.8 Emergency Situations


Always follow all applicable laws and regulations with regard to emergency situations.
If the Laura Smart needs to be powered off due to an emergency situation (like fire,
thunderstorm etc.), follow the procedures in user manual.

In case of fire, do not use water to extinguish the fire unless the Laura Smart
is disconnected from the electrical network!

3 FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
3.1 Main electronic and mechanics parts of the analyzers
Laura Smart contains the following electronic parts:

1. Measuring Head with LED source and detector


2. Power and interface board (with external connectors)
3. MAIN CPU Board with display and printer drivers
4. Strip detector board
5. Internal Printer
6. Optosensor
7. Stepper motor for strip tray movement
8. External power driver

3.1.1 Measuring Head with LED source and detector


Reflectance method is used for determination of colour change of diagnostic pads.
The LEDs illuminate the strip surface and the built in REF surface (on strip tray) with white
light, the light spot is ca 2mm. The reflected light is transformed to the detector chip.
The measured value is a difference value of LED on and LED off status.
This method compensates all additional type errors, like extern light. The reader measures
the REF surface in every strip measurement process.

High efficiency NICHIA warm white LED is used as spot light source. The LED is combining
blue LED source with special phosphors – in this case the light are formed not only by some
discrete wavelengths, but by a part of continuous spectrum.
As a detector is used special RGB color sensor with interference filters – silicone photodiode
with spectral sensitivity to the blue (λ =460nm), green (λ =540nm) and red (λ =620nm).
Active area is a 3-segment circular surface with diameter about 2mm. Spectral response
range is close to human eye sensitivity.
Signal of photodiodes are amplified by operational amplifiers. For measurement is used
green and red signal, blue signal is for reference only.

3.1.2 Power and interface board (with external connectors)


This board contains power inlet from external DC source (or batteries), voltage regulators for
all other boards, motor driver for strip tray stepper motor, RS232 interface chip and
connector, USB A and USB B connectors (keyboard, LIS connection) a connection with
measurement head. This board is also interconnection board for signals from mainboard
(USB interfaces, measurement head, tray opto). With mainboard is this PCB connected by
flat cable.

3.1.3 MAIN CPU Board and display

This board contains:

 Measurement processing unit with memory,


 Display controller with special power supply,
 RTC circuit with backup battery,
 USB controller,
 printer data and motor driver
 power supply for internal printer (+7.5 - 9V) and digital circuitry (+5V, +3.3V)

MAIN board is responsible to control the instrument: contains the secondary power regulator
circuits, printer motor and data driver circuits and complete display driver.
The central ARM micro-controller with several other digital chips (buffers, decoder,
multiplexer) handles the displaying, measurement and data management.

The STM32F429/439 lines offer the performance of the Cortex-M4 core (with floating point
unit) running at 180 MHz while reaching lower static power consumption (Stop mode).

Performance: At 180 MHz, the STM32F429/439 deliver 225 DMIPS/608 CoreMark


performance executing from Flash memory, with 0-wait states thanks to ST’s ART
Accelerator. The DSP instructions and the floating point unit enlarge the range of
addressable applications.

Power efficiency: ST’s 90 nm process, ART Accelerator and the dynamic power scaling
enables the current consumption in run mode and executing from Flash memory to be as low
as 260 µA/MHz at 180 MHz. In Stop mode, the power consumption is 120 µA typical.

Graphics: The new LCD-TFT controller interface with dual-layer support takes advantage of
Chrom‑ART Accelerator™. This graphics accelerator is performing content creation twice as
fast as the core alone. As well as efficient 2-D raw data copy, additional functionalities are
supported by the Chrom-ART Accelerator such as image format conversion or image
blending (image mixing with some transparency). As a result, the Chrom-ART Accelerator
boosts graphics content creation and saves processing bandwidth of the MCU core for the
rest of the application.

3.1.4 Strip detector


Strip detector detects the presence of diagnostic strip on tray. It works as reflectance
detector – infrared light emitted by LED is reflected to IR detector near LED.
If the detector is faulty, must be replaced by new 6-wire type described above (fig. 13).

3.1.6 Opto sensor


Opto sensor snap-in module is responsible for checking strip tray rear position.

3.1.7 Strip tray with motor and gearing


Strip tray is a holder, which transports diagnostic strip under measurement head. The
movement must be fluent with correct timing.
Strip tray contains also white reference field – a plastic piece, which is removable in the case
of damaging, scratching or colouring. Damaging of this field has strong influence to
results!

3.1.8 External Power Supply


The analyzer works with an external power supply. The figure below shows the power supply
unit generating 9V DC.
The power supply modules have an auto range input, which makes possible to use them with
230V or 115V mains outlet and it has the CE and UL safety certificate. The input socket of
the power supply is a standard 3-terminal plug, with power cable connection; the output is a
coaxial power connector.
User keep at disposition four different plug for mains connection – E/F/C, A/B, I and G type of
plug connection (see fig. 20, from left to right, type E/F/C is mounted on adapter). All plugs
are exchangeable by very simple way.
Alternative power supply (9V, 2.7A) can be used for LAURA Smart reader.
Reader can operate on six AA batteries too. With new batteries the operating time is about
240 measurements without printing results (with printing about 200 measurements, it depend
on battery quality).

Note: batteries cannot operate as backup power source – if batteries are entered and
reader operates on power source, drop-out of power do not switch batteries on. Also
disconnecting of power supply cable from reader (batteries are entered) causes
restart reader!

Important notes:
A most of self-drilling screws are mounted directly in plastic covers (mainboard,
display, strip sensor, printer, covers etc.). Do not over tighten screws, because after
several removal of parts screws holes loose rigidity!
Use original screws only on the ground of possibility of cover perforation (longer or
wider screw)

4 ADJUSTMENTS
The adjustments below are made in the factory. Readjustment of following parts is necessary
if some components are replaced.

4.1 Tray movement, setting tray play


The movement of strip tray must be fluent with correct timing.
If the tray moves by jerks or with catches, the measurement result may be incorrect or strip
need not be recognized correctly. In this case the setting of tray movement is needed.
Disassembly reader, insert strip tray to correct position and slightly loose four fixing screws of
metal plate under measurement head (marked on fig.) Press side guiding parts carefully to
one another by fingers and check the fluent movement of tray by hand. The tray need not in
motion stutter, but also not too loose and move sideways.

If the tray has a bigger interrupts in movement, correct fixation of cogwheel is needed.
Cogwheel is fixing on motor shaft by small Allen screw.

4.2 Printer pressure roll settings


In the case of printing problems – no printing or printing only on one side, bad paper detect
or problems with printer cover closing – setting of rubber roll is needed. Perform adjusting by
two fixing screws. After adjusting control alignment of roll against printer bar and proper
setting of cogwheels on the side.

4.3 Service Calibration Using Grey Strips


Principle: Calibration of the sensing electronics using a set of 2 grey strips with
increasing reflectance
Use: This intervention is necessary following all interventions in the optical part, non-
compliant initial analysis or loading of new software
Materials and tools: Set of 2 calibration strips (from the service kit for LAURA readers,
strips no. 2 and 4, Fig. 27)
Procedure:
1. Clean and disinfect the strip tray; close all covers; the mechanical and power
properties of the device are to be in good order. The printer of the device must be
switched on!
2. Switch on the device and touch the display three times on the left upper corner
before getting to the menu (screen with web site is appeared); enter the service
code of “6213” and press OK;
3. Choose the measurement in reflectance units using the “%REM” button and
subsequently start up the calibration mode using the “CAL” button;
4. Insert the calibration strip no. 4 (white); wait for completion of the measurement and
save the measured values;
5. Act in accordance with the instructions shown on the display – insert another strip
from the calibration kit (no. 2 - mid1 grey); switch off the device following completion
of the measurement and return to the Standby mode;
6. Switch on the device and perform a check using a check strip (from accessories) – in
accordance with the user’s guide supplied together with the device.

Notice:
Contingent contamination by solutions following measurement of normal strips may
damage calibration strips! Calibration using a grey strip may be performed repeatedly –
in case of non-compliant measurements.
Calibration gray strips are not wet and have not the notches, therefore they can shift
over tray during its movement!

4.4 Touch screen Calibration


Principle: Calibration of the touchscreen position
Use: This intervention is necessary following all interventions in the display part, non-
compliant initial analysis or after loading of new software.
DO NOT USE if touch screen working properly!
Materials and tools: stylus or pen
Procedure:
1. Clean and disinfect the strip tray; close all covers; the mechanical and power
properties of the device are to be in good order.
2. Switch on the device and touch the display more than three times during bootloader
screen (before getting to the autotest screen);
3. A sentence “Touchscreen calibration” appears, reader also beeps;
4. After a few seconds the small ring appears in the center of display – touch it by pen
or stylus (not by finger!);
5. Other four circles appear near the corners, touch them the same way;
6. A sentence “Calibration done” appears, reader continue to selftest screen and start
normal operation.

5 CHECKING THE PROPER OPERATION


5.1 Self Test
There is a built-in Self test and Service menu in each model. Self test is automatic during
starting instrument and it is used to check the initial operation of the instrument only. Starting
screen are in fig. 29.

5.2 Verification Using a Grey Control Strip


Principle: Verification of measurement performed using grey strips forming a part of the
accessories to the device (Fig. 30)

Use: This intervention is necessary following all interventions in the optical part,
alteration of the strap travel or adjustments of the cover, or suspected incorrect
measurements.
Materials and tools: Check strip (accessories)
Procedure:
1. Clean and disinfect the strap travel and waste container; close all covers; the
mechanical and power properties of the device are to be in good order;
2. Switch on the device and after the Standby mode is displayed, press the “Menu” and
“QC TEST” buttons an next “Checking strip”;
3. check the number on button on the right lower corner – must be the same as number
under barcode field on tube with control strips
4. The device asks for insertion of a check strip; wait for completion of the
measurement and printing of the measured value; compare the measured values
(using reflectance) with the table to be found on the strip package (the device
evaluates success by the means of displaying a message – “Test OK” or “Test
failed”).

Remark:
Contingent contamination by solutions following measurement of normal strips may
damage the calibration strip! Control using a check strip may be performed repeatedly –
in case of non-compliant measurements.

Important notice:

Differences between control and calibration strips

Control strips (see fig. 30)


This control (another name – checking) strip are part of accessories of each instrument –
plastic tube (similar as for diagnostic strips), 3 pcs of strips. These strips are designed
for user control of measurement optics of LAURA SMART reader and give information
about right function of electronics and optics part of reader. Strips are designed for
reusing. They can be damaged only by immersion to liquid or if their surface is coloured
or damaged. Normal using is measurement of control strips before starting daily routine
operation. These strips have no influence to reader settings!

Calibration strips (see fig. 27)


These calibrating strips are strictly designed only for service purposes and cannot be
used by user. Calibration of LAURA SMART reader is not simple – before calibration you
must be sure, that electronics and optics parts are 100% in good order. Calibration of
reader with some fault can cause damage of settings and faulty results. So, calibration is
the last operation for solving reader problems. Therefore we do not distribute this set of
strip freely, only for service after successfully training by EL engineers.

5.3 Service Menu

5.4 Possible Causes of Noise


Generally high count of ambient light can cause problem with strip detection (especially high
intense fluorescent tubes on the laboratory roof). Do not place instrument under fluorescent
lamp or near window.

6 MAINTENANCE
6.1 Daily User Maintenance - Cleaning strip tray
Switch off instrument and pull to remove strip tray itself. Clean it by warm tap water,
especially clean grooves, strip detector hole and white reference field. You can also use
some disinfection reagent - isopropanole, ethanole, surfactants. Do not use colour
reagents, e.g. iodine – reflectance field can be coloured!

6.2 Periodic Maintenance by Service


The instruments should be checked and maintenance must be carried out in every 12 - 18
months, or after 10 000 measurement cycles.

6.2.1 Cleaning and Greasing strip tray


Clean strip tray (see chapter 6.1). After cleaning use a small amount of grease (any type for
plastics gearing, for instance Molycote PG75) between the gear bar and the support, and
between coged wheel.

6.2.2 Checking reader by control strips


Check the optics and electronics part by control strips (see chapter 5.1.1).

6.2.3 Checking reader by control urine


Check the optics and electronics part by control urine Urinorm and DekaPHAN LAURA strip
(see leaflet of Urinorm standard).

7 SERVICE PROCEDURES
7.1 List of Required Tools and Equipment

7.2 Sequence of Service Operations


As regards service work, it is essential to comply with the following sequence of service
operations (only the operations required for elimination of a specific defect are to be
performed):
1. Determination of completeness of the device;
2. Comprehensive cleaning of the device;
3. Inspection related to visible defects (mechanical);
4. Elimination of mechanical defects, resp. electric defects that affect functionality;
5. Loading of the application software;
6. Calibration using grey strips;
7. Check measurement using grey strips (min. 5 times);
8. Check measurement using a DeakPHAN LAURA strip (5x).

7.3 Disassembly of the Device


Removal of covers and internal components proves to be necessary for some service
work and may be performed solely at a service station. The specified procedure
describes the whole procedure of disassembly of the device; solely the applicable part is
to be used in connection with the respective service work.
Prior to removal of parts in case of which it is essential to preserve their mutual positions
(connectors, braces) it is necessary to mark their positions (using a marker). As regards
handling of an open device, it is not recommended to touch PCB, connectors, etc.
unless it is necessary for the respective service activity – due to the possibility of
damaging electronic components by static electricity. Prior to commencement of work on
the electronic section it is recommended to discharge static electricity by the means of
touching a grounded component (radiator, socket guard pin) as well as not to use
clothes and mats made of synthetic materials in the course of work. Should the device
be transported from a cool environment to a hot environment, it is necessary to wait
approx. 2 hours before switching it on in order to ensure balancing of the temperature.
Contingent condensation of humidity affects accuracy of measurements of all detectors
and may damage sensitive circuits.
1. Removal of the strip tray by the means of pulling it towards the worker (the tray puts
up certain resistance);

2. Following unscrewing 4 screws (see Fig. 33, marked by arrows) it is possible – by


the means of pulling – to detach the upper and lower plastic cover – warning: the
covers remain connected by a flat cable (see Fig. 34, arrow)!
3. Following release pull the upper cover to the left (front view) and disconnect the flat
cable from the upper section;

All the service interventions specified herein might be performed in a device


disassembled in this manner.

7.4 Cleaning
Use: Necessary to be performed prior to all measurements using grey strips as well as
following any and all measurements using wet strips
Materials and tools: Water with detergent, cloth (non-woven fabric) that does not
release fibres, isopropyl alcohol (max. 85%), brush
Procedure:
1. The cover of the device is to be cleaned using a soft cloth and water, resp. water
with detergent;
2. The strip feeder is to be removed and thoroughly washed under running water and
subsequently dipped or wiped out using isopropyl alcohol;
3. The same procedure is to be applied to the calibration zone on the feeder;
4. Dust from the feeder travel, its position sensor and adjacent components may be
removed in a dry manner, using a soft brush;
5. The optical part – strip position sensor and detector – may be, following removal of
the upper cover, cleaned in a dry manner, using a soft brush, or isopropyl alcohol (in
case of a strong contamination);
6. No other organic solvent may be used for cleaning purposes – except for
ethanol or isopropyl alcohol (max. 85%). Corrosion of the material of the
device cover or fixation of the optical part might occur!

7.5 Service Interventions in the Software Section


Download the install package.
The site usually requires a password to be opened. Acquire password at
service.czech@erbamannheim.com

The file usually contains the following files

 SMART2.bin - application software, version are changed

Be careful, files all SW versions have the same names! User must
maintenance files in properly labelled folders! Or we recommend to archive
file with full version name (e.g. LauraSmart2_v3.0.bin) and rename it before
downloading into instrument.

7.5.1 Loading of the Application Software


Principle: Programming of the internal memory using Laura Smart application software
that controls activities of the device
Use: In case of issue of a new improved version of SW, following replacement of the
motherboard, in case of damaging of the software loaded in the memory
Materials and tools: Laura Smart® SW – applicable version, USB pen drive (FAT32
formatted)
Procedure:
1. Clean the strip feeder, close all the covers; the mechanical and power properties of
the device are to be in good order.
2. Press screen and power up device. Do not release screen during power up until
Bootloader screen appears.. Enter the code of “6113” and press OK;
3. Insert pendrive in USB2 port (lower port) and follow onscreen instructions. Pendrive
must contain file named to SMART2.BIN. All devices' software versions can be
upgraded in the same way but before programming file name must be renamed to
SMART2.BIN.The device is restarted following completion of the loading procedure;
4. After restarting the touchscreen calibration screen appears – this step is manadtory.
After touchscreen calibration the standard user menu appears.
5. Switch off the device, wait 4 – 5 sec, switch on and touch the display three times
(anywhere) before getting to the menu; enter the service code of “6213” and press
OK; then choose “RESET” and “ESC” buttons. Reader will restart now.
6. It is necessary set all parameters in Settings menu again (e.g. interface settings, time
and date form, language, strip parameter order, units)
7. Subsequently, it is advisable to perform a check using grey strips (in accordance with
chapter 5.1.1), resp. also calibration (in accordance with Chapter 4.3), if control
measurement is not OK.

Remarks:
 A power failure must not be encountered in the course of loading of the software!
If it occurs, it is generally necessary to perform new programming

7.6 Service Interventions - Electronics


In case of performance of service work in relation to electric components it is necessary
to disconnect the device from the power source – except for diagnostics of defects in the
course of operation.
7.6.1 Check and Servicing of Connectors and Soldered Connections on
PCB
Principle: Check of putting of connectors on caps, check of connectors – connection of
pins, firmness of connected conductors, check of soldered flat conductor cables
Most common defects: Non-functional keyboard and display, irregular operation of the
motor, non-functional strip detector, printer defects
Materials and tools: Multimeter featuring a range allowing for a check of conductance
or 0-100 Ohm, test prods, soldering lamp with temperature regulation, tin, soldering
paste, set of watchmaker’s screwdrivers

Procedure:
1. Disassemble the device – see chapter 7.4;
2. Perform a visual and manual check of connectors being put on their counterparts
and soldered connections;
3. Pull the conductors lightly (do not perform in case of flat strip conductors of the
printer!) in order to reveal contingent disconnection or breaking of a conductor;
4. Data connector of the printer: Check the correct position of the lock (sliding frame) on
the connector body soldered in PCB; the flat conductor is to be inserted end-to-end;
5. Data connector of the touch display: Check the correct position of the lock (tilting
frame) on the connector body soldered in PCB; the flat conductor is to be inserted
end-to-end;

6. Servicing of connectors and connections is to be performed by the manufacturer;


7. Should the allowance of some connectors increase over time and they prove to fall
out in the course of operation, they may be fixed using a melt adhesive.

Important notice

Only mainboard with power board, printer and display are connected by wires with
connectors. Other parts (strip detector, measurement head, tray motor, mains
switch) use soldered wire or flat cable connections! Especially unsoldering and
follow-up soldering of flat cables is very difficult and need a special tools for
soldering SMD components.
There are two types of flat cables –with paper insulation (see fig. 40, left side) and
with plastics insulation (see fig. 40, right side). Resoldering of “paper” wires is
almost impossible (a conductive carbon is originated during soldering which is
induced short circuit), for “plastics” wires it is possible with extra care.

If it is possible, in the case of replacing mainboard or power board order these


parts with attached measurement head or strip detector.
7.6.2 Battery Replacement
Most common defects: The device does not store time information and data after
switch-off
Materials and tools: Cross and flat tip screwdrivers, set of watchmaker’s screwdrivers
Procedure:
1. Disassembly of the device cover – see chapter 7.4;
2. Disconnect interconnection flat cable
3. Disconnect display cable, unscrew mainboard and bend it up (do not disconnect
printer cables)
4. Remove the battery (CR 2032) from its holder and insert a new one;
5. Assembly device in reverse way.
6. Set up the clock and other parameters in the device.

7.6.3 Mainboard, strip detector and display Replacement


Principle: Replacement of the mainboard or display only
Most common defects: Replacement of the mainboard is necessary in case of
mechanical or electrical damage, resp. non-proper function, which is not corrected by
SW upgrade (reinstall).
Materials and tools: Screwdriver, soldering machine
Procedure:
1. Completely disassemble instrument (see chapter 7.4)
2. Disconnect display cable
3. Loose two screws of strip detector
4. Loose four screws of mainboard and disconnect two printer cables on rear side.
5. Unsolder strip detector flat cable from mainboard (only plastic cable version, from
mainboard side) – only in case new mainboard without strip detector
6. Solder cable of strip detector on new board – on mainboard you can use soldering
points on upper surface
7. Connect printer cables first, mount mainboard, connect display cable.
8. Fix all boards by screws
9. Assembly all parts and instrument in reverse order.
10. Check functionality of new board, perform calibration and use control strips.

Display can be replaced after dismounting of mainboard – loose four screws of fixing
back plate.

7.6.4 Power and interface board Replacement


Principle: Replacement of the power and interface board
Most common defects: Replacement of the board is necessary in case of mechanical
or electrical damage, resp. non-proper function of power sources or interfaces.
Materials and tools: Screwdriver, soldering machine
Procedure:
1. Completely disassemble instrument (see chapter 7.4)
2. Loose five screws of board
3. Unsolder measurement head flat cable from board (only plastic cable version, from
power board side) – only in case new board without measurement head
4. Unsolder tray motor wires (from power board side)
5. Unsolder wires of mains switch (from power board side)
6. Replace board
7. Solder all cables and wires on new board – on power board you can use soldering
points on upper surface for flat cable and motor wires
8. Fix boards by screws (with covering plastic foil)
9. Assembly all parts and instrument in reverse order.
10. Check functionality of new board and use control strips.

7.6.5 Printer Replacement


Principle: Replacement of the printer
Most common defects: Replacement of the printer is necessary in case of mechanical
or electrical damage, resp. non-proper function of printing.

2. Remove mainboard (see chapter 7.7.3)
3. Loose two printer screws from internal sice and one under paper cover (see chapter
3.1.5)
4. Replace printer, fix it by screws
5. Assembly all parts and instrument in reverse order.
6. Check functionality of new printer and use control strips.

7.7 Service Interventions in the Mechanical Part


7.7.1 Servicing of Damaged Cover and Skeletal Structure
Principle: Replacement of damaged parts
Most common defects: Scratched cover, broken part of strip feeder, broken jamb of a
cover screw
Materials and tools: Screwdriver
Procedure:
Scratching or cuts of parts of the cover represent irreparable damage; however, they do
not affect functionality of the device. Should a customer insist on performance of a
repair, the whole part is to be replaced.

7.7.2 Replacement of the tray motor


Principle: Replacement of the tray motor or cogwheel only
Most common defects: Replacement of the motor is necessary in case of mechanical
or electrical damage, resp. damage caused by massive urine contamination (cogwheel).
The cogwheel may be replaced separately.
Materials and tools: Screwdriver, Allen key No. 1.5
Procedure:
1. Completely disassemble instrument (see chapter 7.4)
2. Loose four screws of measurement head metal plate and remove the plate.
3. Remove two side guiding lists (one of them has guiding rod)
4. Loose four screws of metal motor plate, cogwheel (one Allen screw) and motor (two
screws)
5. Unsolder four motor wires from power board.
6. Solder wires of new motor – on power board you can use soldering points on upper
surface
7. Use small amount of grease to cogwheel and tray (see chapter 6.2.1)
8. Assembly all parts of measurement head and instrument in reverse order, set the
proper tray movements (see chapter 4.1)
9. Check functionality of new motor and fluent movement of tray and use control strips.

Principle: Replacement of the feeder or calibration field
Most common defects: Replacement of the feeder is necessary in case of mechanical
damage or major contamination, resp. damage caused to the calibration field. The field
may be replaced separately.
Materials and tools: Tweezers
Procedure:
1. The feeder may be removed quite simply, by the means of pulling it towards the
worker – when the device is switched off;
2. A new feeder is to be pulled in lightly; after the start-up of the device it will be
automatically set to the correct position;
3. The calibration field may be removed from the feeder (from its bottom section); load
it in the same manner – behind the backstop. Should the new field prove to be loose,
it may be fixed using a melt adhesive from the bottom.

7.8 Completion of a Service Intervention


The following operations are to be performed following completion of each service
intervention and follow-up checks:
 Switch on the device and touch the display three times (anywhere) before getting to
the menu; enter the service code of “6213” and press OK;
 Perform the system reset using the “Reset” button;
 Should the device be returned to a specific customer, set up the language,
parameters of the serial interface, splash screen lines and headers, sequence and
units of measured parameters (if such data are known) and set the date and time;
 Perform a check using grey strips forming a part of the accessories (at least twice)
and insert the printed output to the place where paper is to be found in the printer;
 Clean all parts of the device in accordance with the procedure described in chapter
7.5;
 Check completeness of all the parts and accessories supplied together with the
device;
 Pack the device in the original package (if possible);

8.2 RS232 and USB B connector communication


The byte stream is a human readable ASCII character stream, with occasional control
characters. Most programming environments are able to handle this stream as a simple
ASCII string or text. The stream is line-oriented with special characters to separate fields.
The protocol has a single format for transmitting a single measurement record. If more
records are sent, they are simply chained together one after the other.

The hardware parameters of the RS 232 port are as follows:

8.2.1 Characters and basic structure


The byte stream uses the ASCII characters in the range 1..255 (http://en.wikipedia.org/Ascii),
or 0x01..0xFF in hexadecimal.

If USB host is connected, the reader sends the data trough the USB port as well.
The format of the data stream is identical to the serial (RS232) case.
The communication is unidirectional Laura Smart -> HOST, and is in ASCII text form.
The reader sends 1 result in 1 package. Every package has the same format, which is:

A record transmission consists of three parts: a small header, a big text body, and a small
footer. A single record is never longer than 475 bytes.
