➢ This question paper has five sections: Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D and Section E.
➢ Section A contains seven questions of one mark each, Section B contains four questions of two
marks each, Section C contains two questions of three marks each, Section D contains one
question of four marks and Section E contains two questions of five marks each.
➢ There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in two questions of one
mark and two marks, one question of three marks and all the three questions of five marks
weightage. You have to attempt only one of the choices in such questions.

SECTION-A
1. Two-point charges q and -2q are placed a certain distance apart. What is the ratio of the
magnitude of the forces experienced by the two charges?
2. A charge q is enclosed by a spherical surface of radius R. If the radius of the surface is doubled,
how would the electric flux through the surface change?
OR
A charge ‘q’ is placed at the center of a cube of side l. What is the electric flux passing through
any two opposite faces of the cube?
3. Name the physical quantity whose SI unit is J/C. Is it a scalar or vector?

4. Draw a graph showing the variation of potential energy density with the magnitude of electric
field of a parallel plate vacuum capacitor. In the figure a dielectric slab is between two parallel
conducting plates. If the slab is slightly raised upwards how is the capacitance affected?

Four capacitors of capacitance 1μF, 2μF, 2μF, 4μF are connected to 30 V source, as shown. What
is electric potential difference between the points A and B?
5. What happens to the drift velocity of electrons and the resistance, if the length of the conductor
is doubled, keeping the potential difference across the conductor unchanged?
6. How does the resistivity of metal change with rise in temperature?
7. State Kirchhoff’s law which is equivalent to law of conservation of charge. If 5A current flows
towards a resistor of 20 , how much current leave the resistor?
SECTION-B
8. An uncharged conducting sphere of radius r is placed at the center of a conducting shell of radius
R having charge q. Find out the charge on the inner sphere in the following figure.

The electric field components due to a charge inside the cube of side 0.1 m are as shown in the
following figure.
Ex = a x EY=0 EZ = 0 where a= 500 N/Cm. Calculate the flux through the cube.
9. (i) Can two equipotential surfaces intersect each other? Give reasons.
(ii) Two charges -q and + q is located at points A (0, 0, – a) and B (0, 0, +a) respectively. How
much work is done in moving a test charge from point P (7, 0, 0) to Q (-3,0,0)?

10. Write expression for conductivity of a material in terms of free electron density and their
relaxation time. Using the relation, discuss the dependence of conductivity on temperature for a
semiconductor.
11. Two resistors of 10Ω and 20Ω are connected in turn
(i) in series (ii) in parallel, across the same source of emf
Which of the two resistors consume more power in each case? Justify you answer.
SECTION - C
12. Show that the electric field at any point is equal to the negative of the potential gradient at that
point. The electric potential as a function of distance x is shown in following figure. Draw a graph
of electric field strength E as a function of x.

Define drift velocity. Obtain an expression for current in terms of drift velocity.
13. In a circuit shown in the figure. Find out -
(a) Power supplied by 10V battery.
(b) Power consumed by 4V battery.
(c) The power dissipated in 3 resistors.

CASE STUDY
14. Parallel Plate Capacitor: - We have two parallel plate capacitors P and Q having same capacitance
C0. Capacitor P is connected to a battery of potential difference V and it remains connected to the
battery even after the charging is over. Capacitor Q is also connected to a battery of the same
potential difference V but after the charging gets over, it is disconnected from battery.
(i) Potential difference between the plates of Q, when a dielectric slab is inserted in between
the plates.

15. (a) Draw a circuit diagram showing balancing of Wheatstone bridge. Use Kirchhoff’s rules to
obtain the balanced condition in terms of resistances of four arms of the bridge.
(b) Calculate the equivalent resistance between the points ‘a’ and ‘b’, from following network of
resistors.
OR
(a) Deduce an expression for the energy stored in a capacitor of capacitance C having charge. In
which region of the capacitor the energy gets stored?
(b) A spherical conducting thin shell of radius R is given charge q. Find out the amount of energy
stored on it.
16. (a) Using Gauss’s theorem, derive an expression for electric field due to a uniformly charged thin
spherical shell of radius R at any point outside the shell. Show that this field is the same as
that produced by the charge q placed at the center.
(b) Graphically show the variation of electric field with distance r from the center of the shell.
OR
(a) Derive an expression for the potential energy of an electric dipole placed in a uniform electric
field.
(b) Calculate the amount of work done in rotating a dipole of dipole moment 2 10−8 Cm , from
its position of stable equilibrium to position of unstable equilibrium in uniform electric field
of intensity 5 104 N / C .
