UAE top destination for Indian migrants hosts 3.47 million:


 The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is the top destination for Indian migrants, according to a report by
a United Nations agency.
 The International Organisation for Migration (IOM), announced that India received over $111 billion
in remittances in 2022, the largest in the world, becoming the first country to reach and even
surpass the $100 billion mark.
 The International Organisation for Migration (IOM), in its World Migration Report 2024: in 2022,
India, Mexico, China, the Philippines and Egypt were the top five remittance recipient countries.
 India was well above the rest, receiving more than $111 billion, the first country to reach and even
surpass the $100 billion mark.

India ranks below Pakistan at 159 among 180 countries in the World Press Freedom Index: 'Unofficial
state of emergency'
 India ranked 159 among 180 countries in the latest annual World Press Freedom Index released by
Reporters Without Borders (RSF, short for Reporters sans frontières in French), an international
non-profit organization.
 India had ranked 161 in the 2023 list.
 Meanwhile, Pakistan ranked seven spots above India at 152.
 It had ranked 150 in 2023.
 Norway topped the ranking, while Denmark was on the second rank in World Press Freedom
Index. Sweden ranked third on the list.
China largest trading partner of India in FY24 with $118.4 bn; the US second with $118.3 bn
 According to the data of economic think tank GTRI, China has emerged as the largest trading
partner of India with $118.4 billion in two-way commerce in 2023-24, slightly edging past the US.
 The bilateral trade between India and the US stood at $118.3 billion in 2023-24. Washington was
the top trading partner of New Delhi during 2021-22 and 2022-23.
 China was India's top trading partner from 2013-14 till 2017-18 and also in 2020-21.

 The US was the largest partner in 2021-22 and 2022-23.
UAE tops global fibre connectivity with 99.3 pc penetration
● The UAE has once again been recognized as the global leader in Fibre to the Home (FTTH)
penetration.
● This marks the eighth consecutive year the country has held this top position with a penetration rate
of 99.3 percent, as reported by the FTTH Council in its latest annual report.
● The report analysed data from 20 countries that have exceeded 50 percent FTTH availability and
compared global statistics on fiber optic network penetration.
● It placed the UAE above Singapore (97.1 percent), Hong Kong (95.3 percent), China (92.9 percent),
and South Korea (91.5 percent).
India losing edge in higher education, 33 institutions' ranking dips: CWUR
● According to the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), as many as 65 Indian universities
and institutes from India, led by the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, are among the top
2000 globally but the country is losing its competitiveness in higher education on the international
stage.
● In the 2024 edition of the Global 2000 list by the CWUR, 32 Indian institutions moved up the ladder,
while 33 saw a fall.
● IIM-A, the country’s top institute stood at 410th rank globally, as compared to 419 last year.
● It was followed by the Indian Institute of Science (501) and the Indian Institute of Technology
Bombay (568).
● The rankings are based on the analysis of 62 million outcome-based data points on four factors:
Quality of education (25%), Employability (25%), Quality of faculty (10%), Research (40%).
● In Asia, the University of Tokyo was the highest-ranked institution, at 13th spot globally.
● Globally, Harvard emerged as the top university for the thirteenth year in a row.
China remains leading import partner for India in FY24 at $101.74 billion
● China retained its spot as top import partner for India in 2023-24 with goods inflows increasing 3.29
percent (year-on-year) to $101.74 billion, opposed to an overall 5.66 per cent decline in the country’s
imports.
● High-tech items such as telecom and smartphone parts, laptop and PCs, as well as industrial inputs
such as plastic, iron and steel and chemicals contributed substantially to the imports.
● Total goods imports by India in 2023-24 fell 5.66 per cent to $675.44 billion.
● Russia vaulted to the second spot amongst India’s top import sources, surpassing the UAE and the

US, in 2023-24.
● India’s import from Russia rose 34 per cent to $61.44 billion during the fiscal comprising mostly oil.
● The UAE slipped one spot to the third place with imports from the country declining 9.8 per cent to
$48.01 billion.
● The US, too, slid a rank to the fourth spot with imports from the country falling 19.83 per cent to
$40.77 billion.
India participated in the 19th Session of the United Nations Forum on Forests in New York
● The 19th Session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF) was organized from May 6th to
10th May 2024.
● In this session, India highlighted significant advancements in forest conservation and sustainable
forest management.
● Between 2010 and 2020, India ranks third in the net gain in average annual forest area.
● The report on International Forest Governance was launched at the 19th Session of the United
Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF19),has revealed the rising trend of the ‘climatisation’ of forests.
● It is the first global synthesis report on international forest governance in the last 14 years.
● The report analyses developments in international forest governance since 2010, when the IUFRO-
led Global Forest Expert Panel (GFEP) published its last global assessment.
● India also shared information about the ‘Green Credit Program’, which is designed to incentivize
entities to take up tree plantation and restoration of degraded forest lands.
● The recent celebrations marking 50 years of Project Tiger and 30 years of Project Elephant
underscore India’s commitment to species conservation and habitat protection.
● India also highlighted the creation of the International Big Cat Alliance at this session.
Mumbai and Delhi feature among the World's Top 50 Wealthiest cities, surpassing Washington DC
● Henley and Partners, a leader in residence and citizenship planning, recently unveiled a list of the
World's Wealthiest Top 10 cities and Rising Wealth Hubs, highlighting cities that attract high-net-
worth individuals (HNWIs) with liquid investable wealth of USD 1 million or more.
● Mumbai and Delhi's inclusion in the top 50 wealthiest cities underscores India's economic progress
and urban development.
● On the list they ranked above, Washington, DC the capital city of the World's richest country.
● Mumbai and Delhi join other global financial hubs, such as New York, London, and Tokyo, in the list
of top 50 wealthiest cities.
● The Bay Area tech hub, Tokyo, Singapore, London, Los Angeles, Paris, Sydney, Hong Kong, and
Beijing complete the top 10. These cities offer diverse opportunities and amenities, attracting affluent

India Climbs To 39th Position In World Economic Forum’s Travel & Tourism Development Index
● India has climbed to the 39th position in the World Economic Forum’s Travel & Tourism
Development Index 2024, while the US topped the list.
● India also ranks the highest in South Asia among the lower-middle-income economies.
● Earlier, India was ranked 54th in the 2021 published index.
● On an overall index score of 7, where 1 is the worst, and 7 the best, India scored 4.25.
● After the US, Spain, Japan, France and Australia figure among the top five in the 2024 list.
● The index, prepared in collaboration with the University of Surrey, showed India is highly price-
competitive (18th) and boasts competitive Air Transport (26th) and Ground and Port (25th)
infrastructure.
● The biennial index analysed the travel and tourism sectors of 119 countries around a range of
factors and policies.
● The index is comprised of five dimensions, 17 pillars and 102 individual indicators, distributed
among the 5 different pillars - Business Environment, Safety and Security, Health and
Hygiene,Health and Hygiene, Human Resources and Labour Market, ICT Readiness.
● In 2024, Japan (3rd) is the top performer in the APAC region, with Australia (5th) and China (8th)
ranking in the global top 10.
● China also has the region’s largest and the world’s second-largest T&T economy, while India
(39th) has the largest T&T sector in South Asia and scores as the TTDI’s top lower-middle-
income economy.
Oxford Economics’ Global Cities Index: At 350, Delhi highest ranked Indian city
● Delhi has scored the 350th rank in the Oxford Economics’ Global Cities Index, which has compared
the world's 1000 largest cities on parameters ranging from economics to human capital.
● The list of 1000 largest cities, spread across 163 different countries, also feature several other Indian
cities, including Bengaluru, Mumbai and Chennai.
● However, no Indian city could make the Top 300.
● The national capital is the best performing Indian city on the list.
● The index contains 27 indicators across five categories

Over 50% of world’s mangroves at risk of collapse, climate change leading factor: IUCN
● More than half of the world's mangrove ecosystems are at risk of collapse, with nearly one in five
facing severe risk, according to the findings of the first global mangrove assessment.
● According to the study done using the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Red
List of Ecosystems -- a global standard for measuring the health of ecosystems, climate change
threatens one-third (33 per cent) of the mangrove ecosystems.

World Bank Report - 'Water For Shared Prosperity' Highlights Global Water Access Disparities
● The World Bank report, titled “Water for Shared Prosperity,” was released at the 10th World Water
Forum in Bali, Indonesia.
● It underscores the widening gap in access to water resources and services, exacerbated by factors
like population growth, urbanization, and climate change.
● In 2022, 2.2 billion people lacked access to safely managed drinking water services, while 3.5 billion
lacked access to safely managed sanitation.
● Over 800 million people globally are at high risk of drought, with double that number living in flood-
prone areas.
● The Democratic Republic of the Congo holds over half of Africa’s total water resources.

development of solutions to global water-related challenges.
