FACTS

The Dominican Republic occupies the eastern two-thirds of the large island of Hispaniola, which it shares with the Republic of
Haiti, and is the second largest country in the Caribbean, comprising an area of 18,704 square miles (49.967 square kilometres).
The country has a population of 10,5 million and enjoys sunny tropical weather all year. The average year-round temperatures
are 78°F to 88°F (25°C to 31°C). The cooler season is November through April, while it is warmest from May through October.

TIME: The local time zone is Eastern Caribbean Time (GMT-0400). The Dominican Republic does not observe daylight savings time.

CAPITAL CITY: The Dominican Republic’s historic and sophisticated capital city, Santo Domingo, is the oldest city of the New
World. Santo Domingo’s Colonial City was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1990. In 2019, Santo Domingo joined
UNESCO’s Network of Creative Cities for basing its development on music creativity.

LANGUAGE: Spanish is the official language; however, most employees in hotels and tourist destinations speak relatively good
English, French, German, and Italian, among other languages.

CURRENCY: The Dominican peso (RD$) is the official currency.

GETTING HERE: The Dominican Republic currently has eight international airports throughout the country, including: Las
Américas International Airport (SDQ) in Santo Domingo, Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ), La Romana International Airport
(LRM), Gregorio Luperón International Airport (POP) in Puerto Plata, El Cibao International Airport (STI) in Santiago, and El Catey
International Airport (AZS) in Samaná. Maritime ports that regularly receive cruise ships include: Santo Domingo Port (Don Diego
and Sansouci terminals), La Romana Port (east and west docks, Catalina Island and Casa de Campo Marina), Punta Cana (Cap
Cana Marina), Puerto Plata (Amber Cove) and Samaná Bay facilities (Cayo Levantado).

DOCUMENTATION: Most visitors arriving to the Dominican Republic–including those from the United States, Canada, United
Kingdom, the European Union, Mexico, many South American countries, Central America, Japan, and Israel (see the full list
of countries on our website)–only need a passport with a mínimum validity of the duration of their stay to enter the country.
The cost of the 30-day tourist card, previously paid separately, is now included in the airline ticket for all visitors.

VISAS: Any person, regardless of their nationality, can visit Dominican Republic if they are a legal resident of, or if they have
one of the following valid visas in their passport: United States, Canada, United Kingdom or Schengen. Travellers who do not
have a passport or visa from countries listed above will need to apply for a visa. To issue a visa the passport needs to have

ELECTRICITY: Sockets operate at 110 Volts/60 Hertz, the same as North America. If needed, adapter plugs are available

MEDICAL PRECAUTIONS: Due to the strength of the Caribbean sun and the climatic conditions of the area, it is recommended
that vacationers always wear sunscreen and mosquito repellent when outdoors and drink filtered water throughout the day to

LOCAL TRANSPORT
As the second largest country in the Caribbean, the
Dominican Republic offers a wide range of activities spread
over varying distances. There are many options for travelling
on well-kept roads, both to nearby destinations and to more
distant ones.

LAND TRANSPORT: Most hotels offer taxi services and


the excursions’ operators provide various transport options
to visit the area. Visitors are advised to ask for additional
advice at their hotel reception.

BUSES: The excursions’ operators provide buses, vans, and


vehicles to get to places of interest. In addition, there are
regular lines every day between La Romana / Bayahibe and
Santo Domingo. Check at your hotel or your tour operator to
obtain further information.

VEHICLE RENTAL: Vehicle rental services can be found at


all the airports in the country. The minimum age for renting
is 25 years old with a valid driving licence.

AIRPORT: The La Romana International Airport (LRM),


located just 10 minutes from the town of La Romana and
20 minutes from Bayahibe, has just one terminal with
four modern entrances, resembling an ancient sugar mill.

CRUISE SHIPS: Hundreds of cruise ships moor at the


picturesque Puerto de La Romana. There is so much to do
and see that this destination has two modern terminals with
the capacity for a large cruise ship and another medium-
sized one. In addition, there are ideal anchoring facilities
for 2 cruise ships at Isla Catalina and at the Marina de Casa
de Campo, allowing La Romana to cater for up to 4 ships at

BEACHES
The beaches of La Romana and Bayahibe are renowned
for their extraordinary, fine white sand, as well as for their
pristine waters. They are two of the most beautiful beaches
in the Caribbean and those in the hotel area of Bayahibe
are internationally recognised and certified as “Blue Flag
Beaches”, assuring the high-quality cleanliness of their
waters and the appropriate environmental safety and
Saona Island administration measures.

SAONA ISLAND: Its white sandy beaches are some of the


most beautiful in the Caribbean. It is an extremely popular
area of the Cotubanamá National Park where birds, turtles,
dolphins, whales, and manatees reside. The island also
offers comfortable facilities for visitors such as bathrooms,
showers, and picnic tables.

MINITAS BEACH: This is the beach at the Casa de Campo


resort. It has a cordoned off area for swimming and a
wide variety of water sports such as snorkelling, kayaking,
Minitas Beach windsurfing, pedal boats and more. It has two swimming
pools and one paddling pool, as well as a shopping area, ice
cream parlour and food truck. This family beach also allows
the little ones to enjoy games and sports on the shores of
“La Palapa” beach.

BAYAHIBE BEACH: Bayahibe is located to the southeast of


La Romana and offers strips of exceptional, calm beaches,
far away from the crowds. It is the point of departure for boat
trips to Saona Island and it affords magnificent white sands
with pristine waters and an excellent area for snorkelling
and diving where you can see starfish, cuttlefish, manta rays
and even dive amongst the remnants of boats shipwrecked

DOMINICUS BEACH: This was the first beach in the


Caribbean to receive “Blue Flag” Certification. Dominicus
Beach is greatly appreciated by divers who can swim without
any current along the extensive coral reefs. Visitors can relax
at the nearby restaurants and enjoy doing a bit of shopping
at the souvenir shops.

PALMILLA BEACH: This small, isolated paradise in the
Caribbean belongs to the Cotubanamá National Park where
you can swim, dive, enjoy the sun and do other activities. You
can get there by renting a boat in Bayahibe or La Romana.

CATALINA ISLAND: This small island endowed with white


sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean
Sea is visited frequently, even by cruise ship passengers.
Catalina Island offers water sports, to be precise, diving and
snorkelling. The area is famous for its coral reefs and it now
delights divers with its “Living Museum” after the discovery
of Captain Kidd’s shipwreck.

CATALINITA ISLAND: This small island is located in


Catuano Canal on the coast of the Cotubanamá National
Park. The attractive sandy cay is famous for its crystal-clear
waters, its rich biodiversity, and its plentiful sea life.

ATTRACTIONS

Altos de Chavón

ALTOS DE CHAVÓN: This hidden jewel of La Romana is an


impressive replica of a 16th-century European town, with its
cobbled streets and coral stone and terracotta masonry. Altos
de Chavón was built in 1976 in the precise style designed by
Roberto Copa, a former designer for Paramount Studios, and
Charles Bludhorn, a US industrialist. With its magnificent view
over the Chavón River, the Ciudad de los Artistas (City of Artists)
- as it is also known - has become a major cultural centre,
the home to artists’ studios, exceptional craft workshops
and influential art galleries, where students from all over the
world compete for places on its intense study programme
that encompasses ceramics, fashion, design, and other
handicrafts. Its Design School is associated with the Parsons
School of New York, where students complete their studies. In
the town centre there is a Grecian-style amphitheatre, bars,
restaurants, museums, and the Church of San Estanislao.

Casa de Campo Marina Chavón River

CASA DE CAMPO MARINA: This is one of the most complete, Cueva de las Maravillas (Cave of Wonders)
prestigious marinas in the Caribbean. It is located within the confines
of the Casa de Campo resort where the River Chavón flows into the
Caribbean Sea. The Casa de Campo marina, designed by the Italian
architect Gianfranco Fini, includes housing, both villas and “town-house”
type apartments. The marina provides berths for 350 yachts from 50
to 250 feet long, and it was inspired by Mediterranean towns. It is fully
equipped to provide a wide range of high-class services and facilities.

PADRE NUESTRO ECOLOGICAL AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL PATH:


This path stretching around 2 km allows visitors to appreciate the fauna
and flora, unique to the region, as well as to explore areas that were once
inhabited by the Taíno Indians.

CUEVA DE LAS MARAVILLAS (CAVE OF WONDERS): Located


between San Pedro de Macorís and La Romana, it is home to exceptional
rock art and boasts some amazing stone formations, mainly stalactites,
stalagmites, and geological columns. This fascinating cave system
contains hundreds of petroglyphs, pictograms, and engravings, which
are extremely well preserved, created by the Taíno Indians who resided
here thousands of years ago. The spot is easily accessible to visitors
as it has an excellent lighting system, ramps, paths, and a modern lift.

KVIAR DISCO & CASINO BAYAHÍBE: Located in the heart of
Bayahíbe, this is the perfect spot for nightlife in the whole of the eastern
area of La Romana - Bayahíbe. Visitors can enjoy a night of gambling,
Las Vegas style, at the casino but with a “Caribbean touch”, and they
can also dance till dawn enjoying a unique experience at the disco, a
must visit if you are in Bayahibe.

DEEP-SEA FISHING: The waters surrounding La Romana are some


of the best spots in the world for deep-sea fishing. Every year, there
are fishing tournaments like the Blue Marlin Classic, El Dorado, and El
Bonito, which attract fishermen from all over the world. Whilst you are
more likely to catch a marlin in the summer, in winter, there are lots of
mahi-mahi, barracudas and sailfish.

COTUBANAMÁ NATIONAL PARK: This is home to more than 500


varieties of flowers, 300 species of birds, and long stretches of beaches
with underwater wonders. It is also one of the best cared for and most
frequently visited protected areas in the country. Here, visitors can take
a tour, discover the ruins of Taíno art, take excursions, watch birds and
dive in the coral reefs populated by manatees, dolphins, and other sea
creatures.

UNDERWATER MUSEUMS: Fascinating underwater archaeological


reserves can be found in the hotel area of Bayahibe. Shipwrecks of
18th-century galleons, discovered by marine biologists, have been
recreated. These museums are attractive for divers and snorkellers.

CAPTAIN KIDD’S SHIPWRECK: The pirate ship Cara Merchant was captured and captained by Captain William Kidd who later
abandoned it, fleeing to New York in 1699, aiming to clear his name of the charges of piracy. Centuries went by without anyone
finding the lost shipwreck until it was discovered just off Catalina Island in 2008. This discovery led to the National Geographic
TV Channel producing a documentary on the famous captain called “Shipwreck Captain Kidd”, based on the discovery and study
of the pirate ship Cara Merchant. It was also the origin of the Living Museum which serves as a scientific resource for students
and professionals of underwater archaeology, marine biology, ecology, and geology.

DIVING: Some of the best diving spots in the Caribbean can be found off the coasts of La Romana. In combination with its
spectacular warm, blue waters, the underwater world of La Romana affords some amazing adventures which take place amongst
old shipwrecks, underwater caverns, and impressive coral reefs. The divers visiting the region can explore one of the greatest
examples of marine biodiversity in the Caribbean and they will get the chance to observe more than 120 species of tropical fish
and a wide variety of sea fauna. Here lie the underwater museums of Guadalupe and Guaraguao, which have shipwrecks and
other archaeological artefacts on show, as well as the shipwrecks of the Atlantic Princess and St. George located in Bayahibe.

made from embossed metal. The Casa de Campo marina also has various boutiques with items to suit all tastes. You can find
clothes, jewels, traditional handicrafts, ceramics, fine cigars and much more.

The stores also have items by world-renowned fashion designers like Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Galliano, and Prada, to name just
a few. The Dominican designer Jenny Polanco has stylish stores well worth a visit in the marina and in Altos de Chavón. If you are

PROCIGAR FESTIVAL: Hundreds of people from Asia, Europe,
EVENTS and America attend the annual Procigar festival in La Romana
every February. This event, organized by the Tobacco Producers’
Association of the Dominican Republic, includes activities at Casa
de Campo, tours to the García Tobacco factory, a golf tournament,
beach excursions, educational opportunities, entertainment,
leisure activities, premium cigar smoking and a lifetime of

CASA DE CAMPO SPRING SHOOTOUT: During the month


of April every year, the Casa de Campo Spring Shootout is held at
the famous Pete Dye’s signature courses Teeth of the Dog, Dye Fore
and The Links. The 54-hole tournament has net and gross score
divisions and the winners of each division compete in a final round.

POLO TOURNAMENT: This is an annual event held at the


exclusive Casa de Campo resort between January and April. The
best polo players in the country meet up for the event, which is
regulated by the International Polo Federation.

PATRON SAINT OF BAYAHIBE: The festivities honouring the


Patron Saint of Bayahibe last for nine days. They are held in the
months of April and May and include a variety of artistic, cultural
and sports activities, thus becoming one of the most anticipated
festivals by citizens and visitors alike.

BAYAHIBE FISHING TOURNAMENT: This is held every May


for a period of three days during which fishermen from Bayahibe,
Saona Island, Boca de Yuma, La Romana and other surrounding
areas compete to catch the biggest fish under various categories
and the winners are awarded major prizes. The most recognized
and awarded species are Blue Marlin and Mahi-mahi.

INTERNATIONAL TENNIS TOURNAMENT: Professional


and amateur tennis players come together every June on the La
Terraza tennis courts in Casa de Campo to compete for the Casa
de Campo Cup. This event includes practice activities, doubles and
singles tournaments, a prize-giving ceremony, and a reception.

18 Dye Fore Golf Course


BASEBALL: The regular season of the Winter Baseball Championship starts in mid-October
and goes on until January. In December and January, the best players in the Dominican
major baseball Leagues meet up with their local teams to close the regular season and give
way to the final season. Some matches are played at the Francisco Micheli Stadium in La
Romana, home of Toros del Este. The championship winner will represent the country in the
Caribbean series. Every year, this series rotates its headquarters between the Dominican

CASA DE CAMPO OPEN: The Dominican Golf Federation (FEDOGOLF) holds the Casa
de Campo Golf Open in September, which attracts more than 200 male and female players
from around the world. The 54-hole tournament is aimed at amateur and professional golfers
and takes place at the Teeth of the Dog, Dye Fore and The Links championship courses.

MARATHON FOR HOGAR DEL NIÑO: This is an annual event held at the Casa de
Campo Resort every October with the purpose of raising funds for the Hogar del Niño. It has
42K, 21K, 10K and 5k circuits, certified by the IAAF (International Association of Athletic
Federations). There is entertainment after the race.

CONCERTS IN ALTOS DE CHAVÓN: The amphitheatre can accommodate almost 5,000 people and it is popular for
staging concerts, musical videos, and private events. Previous concerts have included performances by Gloria Estefan, Sting,
Shakira, Andrea Bocelli, Elton John, Juan Luis Guerra, Carlos Santana, Marc Anthony, and many others.

LA ROMANA GOLF TOURNAMENT: Organized by the Association of Hotels & the Tourist Cluster La Romana – Bayahibe,
this tournament is played every June on one of the world-class golf courses of Casa de Campo, with a view to promoting
La Romana as a golf destination in the Dominican Republic and throughout the Caribbean.

BAYAHIBE 10K: The 10K Marathon takes place in September and has become one of the most anticipated events in Bayahibe
as a way of promoting good health and good habits. 600 runners compete on a 10-km route, including a stretch with spectacular
views over the Caribbean Sea and the lush natural beauty of the area.
