12 False Messiahs in Jewish History

12 False Messiahs in Jewish History
Let me show you a little about these broken cisterns that have not satisfied the thirst of the Jews for their
Mashiach:
1. BAR KOJVA, also known by the name BAR KOZIBA, led more than 200,000 soldiers in the great revolt
of the Jews against the Romans between 132 and 135 CE. During this revolt, RABBI AKIVA, one of the
fathers of the Jewish faith , announced Bar Kochva as the Mashiach. The religious leaders of the time clearly
expected a military leader who would liberate Jerusalem and rebuild the Temple. (b. Sanhedrin 93b.)
BAR KOZIBA reigned for 2 and a half years and then said to the Rabbis: “I am El Mashiach.” They
responded: “O Mashiach, it is written that He smells and judges. Let us see if Bar Koziba can do it.” When
they saw that it was impossible for him to judge by the scent, they killed him. The idea of “smelling” belongs
to the fact that Mashiach has to find a very particular criterion. It is clear that during the era of Bar Koziba the
expectation was of a “military Mashiach.”
However, RAMBAM, the authoritative Jewish commentator, or MAIMONIDES (1135 1204) completely
disregarded the words of the wise men when He said: “It must not be assumed that the Mashianic king must
perform miracles and wonders, bring a new phenomenon to the world, rise from the dead or perform other
similar deeds. That's definitely not true. We can find the proof in the fact that Rabbi Akiva, one of the great
sages of the Mishna, was one of the supporters of King Bar Koziba and would describe him as the Mashianic
King. He, and all the wise men of his generation, considered him to be the Messianic King until he was killed
because of his sins. Once he was murdered, they realized that he was not the MESSIAH. The wise men did not
ask him for any signs of wonders.” (RAMBAM: Mishneh Torah).
Coins were recently discovered that confirm the story of this character.
See: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/israelnoticiascom/~3/pXbnMTGxlnQ/
One coin had an image of a palm tree with seven branches and two bunches of grapes above the name
“Shimon,” the name of Bar Kochba, in ancient Hebrew. The other side of the coin had a fig leaf with a branch
and around it an inscription meaning “the second year of Israel's freedom.”
Coins of this type were minted during the Bar Kokhba revolt, from 132 to 135 CE, during which Jewish rebels
managed to regain some autonomy from Rome. The “second year” is the year 133 or 134 AD
The Bar Kochba revolt, which lasted three and a half years, was the last and possibly the largest of several
Jewish revolts against foreign rulers in ancient times. The rebels prepared well in advance and, according to the
3rd century historian Dio Cassius, Roman legions were brought in from other outposts of the Empire to put it
down.
Dio Cassius wrote that some 50 Jewish fortresses and more than 1,000 towns were destroyed, along with
hundreds of thousands of Jewish lives lost. Rabbinical leaders who supported Bar Kochba were executed,
including the scholar Rabbi Akiva, who had anointed Shimon as Bar Kochba (the Son of the Star), a messiah
for the Jews.
Later, after his failed revolt that led to the death and destruction of many, the sages discarded him as the
promised Mashiach.

Bar Koziba was a false Messiah, of course, and the revolt ended in a bitter defeat for the Jewish people. To our
surprise, Rambam later contradicted himself when he described the miracles, signs and wonders that Mashiach
will bring as he supernaturally renews the Davidic kingdom and reunites all the Jews from around the world.
2. RABBI MOSHE OF CRETE was another false prophet who lived in the 5th century CE. Rabbi Moshe
promised a direct passage across the Sea to the land of ISRAEL, exactly as Moses our Rabbi did when he
parted the RED SEA. During Pesach, many of Rabbi Moshe's followers jumped into the Sea and lost their
lives, following him. According to some reports, Rabbi Moshe sank in The Sea as well. By doing this, you
classify yourself as another FALSE MESSIAH.
3. THE FALSE MASHIAH SARNI (SARNOS) who lived around 720 CE appeared in Syria and demanded
the exile of all Muslims from the Land of Israel. When he was captured, he told the Muslim leadership that he
was trying to deceive his own people. He was returned to Jewish custody to face a strong reprimand from the
Jewish authorities.
4. ABU-ESIE also known as OVADIAH BEN YITZHAK: He was a false Messiah who lived in Persia
approximately between 744 and 750 CE. He was a tailor who never learned to read and write, but publicly
declared himself The Promised Mashiach of Israel. After his death, his followers continued in their faith for
another 200 years. THE Rambam in his letter to the Jews in Yemen wrote:
“It is important to know that at the beginning of the kingdom of Yishmael, there was a man who stood by the
river and declared that he was the Messiah……10,000 followed him from ISRAEL.”
Haskin Gili: False Messiahs within the Jewish people.
5. FALSE PROPHET EVEN ARYEH of Córdoba was identified as a false Messiah in 1118 CE in the letter
to the Jews of YEMEN. (Rabbi YG Avraham .The Essence of Jewish Theology. Vol. II)
6. 3 years later, the false prophet SHLOMO KRAI appeared in the Land of Israel as a false Messiah. He
prophesied that all Jews, scattered around the world, would return to the Land of Israel during his lifetime.
7. THE FALSE Messiah DAVID ALROI made his appearance in 1160 CE. in Northern Iraq. His Messianic
movement was active in Iraq and Kurdistan. The focus of their movement was the rebellion against the Muslim
regime.
8. AVRAHAM ABULAFIA He was born in Zaragoza in 1240 CE. where I study philosophy with a great
emphasis on RAMBAM'S “GUIDE FOR THE PERPLEXED”. Later, after returning to Spain, he focused his
studies on KABALAH AND “THE BOOK OF CREATION” (Sefer Yetzirá). According to him, when he
turned 30 he received a revelation that he should meet the POPE to discuss the “matters of Judaism.” On the
night of Rosh-HaShana in 1280 R' Abulafia appeared in ROME but the Pope refused to meet him. In 1281 the
Rabbi made a publication declaring himself the Mashiach with many followers around him. He died in 1291
with limited impact and recognition.
9. THE FALSE MESSIAH AVRAHAM BEN NISIM: Lived around 1310 CE. and his followers called him
HANAVI MEVILAH (The prophet of Vilah).
10. RABBI MOSHE BOTAREL: In 1392 he wrote a famous commentary on the Sefer Hayetzirah, or “the
book of creation” swearing that Elijah the Prophet appeared to him and that he was the PROMISED

MASHIAH TO ISRAEL.
11. SHABTAI TZVI: He was born in Izhmir, Türkiye, and is considered one of the most famous FALSE
MESSIAHS. In his youth he was heavily involved in the study of KABALAH AND THE ZOHAR. Natan
Ha'ázati convinced him that he was THE Mashiach with thousands who would follow him as the anointed
one... In the year 1666 CE. He was taken prisoner by the Ottomans who gave him the option of converting to
Islam or dying. He chose to convert to Islam under the name AZIZ MUHAMMED. Sadly, many of his
followers also converted to Islam calling it a new true religion. The Jewish world was completely shocked and
as a result, the study of KABALAH was restricted throughout Europe. He died in ALBANIA at the age of 50.
12. YAAKOV FRANK In the middle of the 18th century this famous Kabbalist declared himself THE
Mashiach of Israel in Poland. In 1757 he renounced Judaism and embraced the Christian faith, but at the same
time his followers continued to worship YAAKOV FRANK as divine.
The list of false Prophets and Mashiach that have led many Jewish souls to destruction goes on and
on…….The decision against YESHUA, the true Mashiach who was rejected has increased the blindness in the
eyes of the Jewish people in relation to haMashiach fiance.
Regarding The Identification of Mashiach, the organization Jews for Judaism states in a recent discussion:
“Any conversation about Mashiach needs to begin with a strict definition before beginning to say anything
about him. The title MASHÍAJ was created by Judaism and not by the Bible.”
I add: better said, it is not the title but the rabbinic concept of who or what Mashiach should be like, it is a
rabbinic invention.
When Jews speak of the “MESSIAH,” there is a common understanding about what is being talked about.
Therefore the strict definition of MASHIAH for the purpose of any discussion with Jews is: “the future
Davidic King who will reign during the time of Israel's peace and universal recognition of Elohim.”
If this definition is not the strict one then we Jews do not continue the discussion about the “Messiah” that the
Jews speak of.” (Remember the concept of the title was coined by the Jews).*
It is ironic to think that after 2,000 years the Jewish people cannot agree on the definition of Mashiach. And
furthermore, according to Rabbi Cohen (Rabbi Eli Cohen "Messiah's truth") the definition is based on
COMMON UNDERSTANDING. My question again is: common understanding of whom? From the Talmudic
sages who rarely spoke about Mashiach in a systematic way, or from tens of thousands of followers of false

Messiahs for years?
If we are to observe the statements of Rabbi Cohen, it is truly and without bias it is clear that none of the false
Mashiach brought knowledge about Elohim, nor peace to Israel, although they were recognized as Mashiach
by many. The common “knowledge and understanding” of Mashiach presented by Rabbi Cohen simply does
not exist at the foundation of Judaism. Furthermore, we can declare that many Mashian prophecies are
generally accepted, but always the discussion about the Mashian era and the nature of Mashiach is full of
contradictions that can hardly be called common understanding.
Let us not forget that Yeshúa, our Master Instructor, warned us:
Matthew 24:5 For many will come in my name, saying, “I am the Messiah, and they will deceive many.”
Jude 3 (DHH 1996) Dear brothers, I have felt a great desire to write to you about the salvation that both you
and I have; but now I see the need to do so to beg you to fight for the faith that was once delivered to the holy
people.
I wish that Yeshúa Ha Mashiaj our Elohim and Redeemer guides you to grow in all understanding.
