Guide: How to Draw Floral Art with

Pens
Updated: 07 Sep 2019

Introduction
Flowers are NOT easy to draw!

Well-executed pencil drawings of flowers are a hit on some social networks and are therefore
shared, liked and commented on.

I hope that at the end of this flower drawing guide, you will be able to draw your favorite flower.

You can use a real flower as a reference or a picture of a flower.

Conceptual art
First things first, do not use concept images that are protected by copyright law.

What will happen if someone likes your beautiful drawing and wants to buy it?

So, get in the habit of using free images for ANY use.

Here are some websites that allow you to download FREE stock images.

How to create smooth lines with a pen

For a pencil drawing to look good, each mark must be drawn with confidence. That is, a smooth
line.

That's easier said than done!

With time and practice, the lines will flow. Until then, we'll start with a pencil.

The advantage of a pencil is that it can be erased. Therefore, we can correct the errors until we
are happy with the result.

So take your reference image and draw with a pencil. Draw it lightly so that it is easy to erase
later.
Note:

The pencil drawing doesn't have to be perfect. Remember that nature is abstract. No two flowers
are identical.

Reference image and pencil sketch

Once the pencil sketch is ready, it is easy to go over it with a pen. Do it in a safe and gentle way,
even if the pencil marks are not exactly on top of the pencil marks.

When drawing with a pen, it is important to pay attention to overlap .

The parts that are closest to the observer should be drawn first. In this case, draw the stamens
first and only then draw the petals.

After the pen ink is dry (usually less than a minute, depending on the brand of pen), it is safe to
gently erase pencil drawing marks.

How to draw a complex flower

Some flowers or compositions are quite complex and attention must be paid to proportions,
foreshortening and perspective.

This is too much to deal with when you start drawing.

One solution to this problem is to create a guidelines grid. Then, instead of one complex image,
we have several smaller, simpler images.

To find the midpoint of an image, draw two diagonal lines from the corners of the image.

Now we can draw horizontal and vertical lines from the midpoint.
Find the center and create a grid

Do the same for the drawing paper. Make sure the height to width ratio is the same for the
reference image and the drawing paper.

You can crop the reference image to get the same aspect ratio.

Now it's easier to draw with a pencil.

Note:

If the image is still complex for you, you can continue adding grid lines for each rectangle.

Remember to use the pencil gently. It will be easier to erase after drawing with a pen.

What pen to use to draw flowers

While it is possible to draw or sketch with a regular pen, there are many advantages to using
artist pens.

These pens are called fineliners or technical pens and their ink is usually black, although some
brands offer additional colors.

Fineliners

Artist pens create lines of uniform thickness and come in different sizes, allowing you to draw
thick contour lines or thin lines for more detail.

The ink for these pens is made from pigments and is therefore very durable.

Line width and size

By drawing with a pencil, we can draw soft edges for distant objects.

Feathers have a gloss value and therefore cannot produce smooth edges.

Instead, we can use a pencil with a smaller tip size to create thinner lines for background objects
and a larger tip size to create thicker lines for foreground objects.
Different tip sizes

Using lines with different thicknesses to add depth:

Another way to add depth is with size.

When drawing in perspective, the further away an object is, the smaller it will appear.

For that reason, foreground flowers will be drawn larger, while background flowers will be
smaller.

Tip:

To add depth to your drawing, create a smaller background flower, use a pen with a smaller tip
size, and have the foreground flower overlap.

Weft and shading

Hatching is a drawing technique that uses parallel lines.

A pencil produces lines with a brightness (dark) value.

To create the illusion of different brightness values, that is, areas that look lighter and areas that
look darker, different types of shading can be used.

Types of shading

Fine shading lines can be used for light areas.

By using different degrees of cross-shading, it is possible to create the illusion of different

brightness values:

Types of line with pens

As mentioned above, a pencil has a single brightness value, but when you hold it at an acute
angle, it can produce a less defined line and therefore create a second brightness value, which is
lighter.
This will not work with all brands of pens or on super smooth paper. With some brands, it will
only work with one nib size, usually 0.1 nib.

For this to work, the strokes must be quick and confident.

How to add insects

Drawing takes time.

Trying something new, such as adding insects or other objects, can be risky.

A practical way to deal with this situation is to start by drawing the new object.

When the result is successful, we can continue drawing.

Keeping it simple
Sometimes just a few lines can be more than enough.

It is possible to draw lines with a short line or dot at the end, suggesting a gradually disappearing
line.
Points and short lines

The middle part of a flower may seem complicated to draw.

The way to draw it is to look at the basic shapes it is made of and its direction.
Paying attention to shapes and direction.

After drawing the basic shapes, it is important to look at the brightness values.

For areas that look darker, we can draw more lines to create the illusion of darker brightness
values.

Let's try a step-by-step drawing for a Muscari (grape hyacinth) plant.

You usually have some closed flowers and some open flowers, so we'll practice both:

Kill it on social media
To be successful on social media, many factors must be considered. For example, good content or
SEO.

Here's my guide on how to drive traffic with Pinterest .

After analyzing successful Instagram accounts for drawing flowers, I found some tips and
techniques that work.

1. Draw bold!

Meaning, draw thick and noticeable contour lines:

2. small images

A pencil drawing has its limitation. A small pencil drawing image will look better than a close-up.
To do that, take a photo of your flower drawing (or sketch) including its surroundings. For example,
the real flower you used as a reference, a step-by-step process, pens you used, etc.

Also, remember that most people use their smartphone for social media, so a tall image will take up
more space on the screen and therefore have more presence.

3. Draw big

Drawing on a large sheet of paper, such as A4 size, allows you to add more details and then the
small photo for your drawing will look more refined.
That said, simple drawings with little detail work also work well.

4. flower art

Once you feel comfortable drawing a specific flower, you can draw an entire sheet of paper of that
flower.

Cosmos floral art

Painting the background black will add contrast:

Another option is to draw various types of flowers.

5. Do your thing!

After practicing drawing flowers, you will begin to develop your own style. That's the best way to
be successful.

Summary
After a little practice drawing flowers with pens, it becomes quite fun and relatively quick to
produce.
